Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 3, teams flew from Chile to which Portuguese city?

Answer: Lisbon

Departing from Cascada de las Animas outside Santiago, Chile in Leg 3, teams were told to head to a travel agent (and the airport) to get to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, as fast as possible. This proved more difficult than it let on from the clue as many teams had to deal with difficult and multiple connections, often landing at vastly different times from other teams. Nonetheless, all teams eventually made it and, upon their arrival, had to find a tram at Martim Moniz Square which would take them to their next destination.
2. In Leg 3 (in Portugal), teams received a painting of which of these?

Answer: A coach

After taking the tram in front of Martim Moniz Square, teams located their next clue at Miradouro das Portas do Sol, handed to them by a Portuguese singer-- it was a large painting of a lavish coach which would lead them to the National Coach Museum, Museu Nacional dos Coches.

There, teams would be able to find their next clue waiting on the sign in front of the coach depicted. What they did with the coach picture after that was completely up to them.
3. How many teams chose to complete the 'Tiles' Detour option in Portugal in Leg 3?

Answer: Five

After finding their clue at the National Coach Museum, the teams ended up needing to complete a Detour task-- a choice between 'Tiles' and 'Miles'. In 'Tiles', teams headed to Fábrica Sant'Ana where they had to complete a puzzle using ceramic tiles; in 'Miles' they headed to Padrão dos Descobrimentos to track Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe with a large compass, tracking the distance to within five hundred miles of the actual journey-- 16,500 miles. Nicky and Kim, Brandon and Adam, Leo and Jamal, Ally and Ashley, and Tim and Marie completed 'Tiles' while the others finished 'Miles'.
4. During the Road Block task in Portugal in Leg 3, team members had to dress in which of these?

Answer: Medieval armor

After the Detour, teams were told to take a taxi through Lisbon to Monsanto Forest Park to find a medieval gathering. Here they located the Road Block task, which required that one member of each team dress up as a knight, then fire a ballista across a field to hit a shield target on the other side.

When they hit the shield they could retrieve it and their next clue on the back. Travis, Jason, Kim, Danny, Adam, Ally, Jamal, and Tim completed this task.
5. Which team was eliminated in Leg 3?

Answer: Chester and Ephraim

After the Road Block task, the teams headed onward via taxi to their third Pit Stop of the race in the town of Sintra, Portugal. Once teams ascended the battlements of Castelo dos Mouros they could check in with Phil at the mat. Nicole and Travis narrowly sneaked past Jason and Amy to claim their first win of the race, taking with them a trip for two to Costa Rica courtesy of Travelocity.

In the end of the leg, Chester and Ephraim (who placed first in the previous leg) were eliminated upon arriving in Lisbon a day late. Phil met them at the airport to give them the bad news.
6. In Leg 4, teams needed to fly to the northern reaches of what Scandinavian country?

Answer: Norway

Leaving Castelo dos Mouros in Leg 4, teams needed to get out of the sunny climate of Portugal and head northward to a land where the sun doesn't set (at least not in the summer), Lapland. First, they needed to connect to a flight that would take them north to Bodø, Norway.

Then, they had to arrive at the ferry terminal to take an 'overnight' trip to Svolvær, Norway. All eight remaining teams took the same trip, arriving at the same time.
7. Regardless of their Detour task in Leg 4 (a choice between 'Hang Your Heads' and 'Hammer of the Cods'), teams had to work with fish.

Answer: True

Upon locating their clues at the ferry terminal in Svolvær, teams located a Detour task, a choice between 'Hang Your Heads' and 'Hammer of the Cods', both of which required that they visit the L Bergs Sønner AS Fish Processing facility. In 'Hang Your Heads', the teams had to properly impale and string several fish heads, then carry them in a wheelbarrow to drying racks a short while away to be hanged.

In 'Hammer of the Cods', the teams (only Tim and Danny and Nicky and Kim completed this one) had to go to the drying racks first, collect fifteen dried cod pairs, return them to the plant, and smash them to make one kilogram of jerky.
8. During their frigid Road Block in Leg 4, team members needed to perform a bungee swing off which of these?

Answer: Bridge

Teams completing their Detour task were told to head to the high-speed boat terminal in Svolvær (Lofoten Explorer) to hitch a quick ride to Henningsvær, Norway. Once there, atop Henningsvær Bridge, they could complete the Road Block task which required that a member of each team perform a bungee swing off the side of the structure, then drop into the Arctic Ocean to collect their next clue from a buoy. Brandon, Jason, Tim, Nicole, Ashley, Jamal, Tim, and Nicky made quick work of this task.
9. After their Road Blocks in Leg 4, teams needed to drive which of the following to retrieve a clue?

Answer: Ford trucks

Following the Road Block task in Henningsvær, teams made their way to a local rock quarry to complete their next task, this time featuring some cleverly (product-) placed Ford Ranger trucks. For this challenge, one team member needed to drive stick into the quarry while the other hitched a large boulder to the back of the vehicle.

When the boulder was pulled aside they could collect their next clue buried underneath and continue on.
10. Which team was first to arrive at the fourth Pit Stop (before being told to keep racing)?

Answer: Brandon and Adam

After their test ride in the new Ford Rangers, the teams were given a pack of Viking coins (which they would need later in the race) and a clue sending them to the next Pit Stop, a Viking longhouse standing outside of Vestvågøy, Norway. Brandon and Adam were the first to meet Phil at the mat here, earning themselves $5,000 each as a prize. Phil, however, told them to keep racing directly into Leg 5. Nicky and Kim, who were the last to arrive, were spared from elimination with no Speed Bump (since the leg was a continuation and not simply a non-elimination rest period).
