Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the starting line of this twenty-third "Amazing Race"?

Answer: California

In this twenty-third race, eleven teams reached the starting line for a race around the world by carriage on an old west street in the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio in Santa Clarita, California. When they were given the go-ahead, the teams were told to hop into their Ford C-Max Energi hybrid vehicles, listen to their clue on the onboard console, and drive to LAX to catch one of two flights to the Pacific Coast of South America; seven teams caught the first flight and four caught the second.
2. Leg 1 of the race sent teams to what Chilean city?

Answer: Iquique

Flying southward to Iquique, Chile, the teams were told to hop into cabs upon landing to make their way to the Zona de Parapentes atop Alto Hospicio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There, they met Javier, the man who gave them the clue in their Ford hybrids back in California, on a cliff overlooking the beaches below.
3. In the first Road Block of the race in Chile (in Leg 1), the selected team member did which of the following?

Answer: Rode in a taxi

Nicole, Ephraim, Nicky, Shane, Ashley, Jamal, Marie, Adam, Amy, Naina, and Danny were selected for this Road Block task in which one person needed to 'follow the leader'. For this task, the selected person had to follow their teammates who would be taking a leap off the cliff in a paraglide down to Playa Brava. To do this they needed to hail a taxi and make their way to their mystery destination where, once they'd met up, they would be able to advance.
4. During the second Road Block in Chile in Leg 1, team members had to collect which of these from a harbour?

Answer: Fish

After the first Road Block, teams needed to find their next clue box waiting at Muelle Prat, a harbour on the coast of Iquique. Once there the teams found a second Road Block, this one required to be performed by the team mate who did not get selected for the first one (in other words, whoever paraglided completed this one). For this task, the selected team member had to hop into a rowboat and search the harbour for one of three boats containing fish, and return five of them back to the dock to get their next clue. All ships would only have a certain amount of fish, so racers had to be quick.
5. Which team was the first to be eliminated during this race?

Answer: Hoskote and Naina

After the second Road Block, the teams were told to head on foot to their first Pit Stop, Teatro Municipal de Iquique. Although Travis and Nicole arrived first, they took a taxi to the mat and were served with a thirty minute penalty. As such, arguing exes Tim and Marie snagged first place and two Express Passes (one of which would need to be given to another team by Leg 5).

In the end, it was Hoskote and Naina who arrived after sunset in last place. And so, Hoskote and Naina were eliminated and, as it seems, they didn't learn a thing from the experience.
6. For their Detour task in Leg 2, teams needed to travel to which region of Chile?

Answer: The Atacama Desert

Heading out from their first Pit Stop, the teams were bunched up waiting for their next task to open at Museo Corbeta Esmeralda. There, teams needed to learn a quote from a local on the street ("iAl abordaje, muchachos!") and say it to the deckhand onboard to get their Detour task. For this task, the teams needed to leave Iquique and take taxis into the Atacama Desert, then ride bikes across the dry landscape to complete either 'Brining' or 'Mining'.
7. Which Detour task was completed by the most teams in Chile in Leg 2?

Answer: 'Brining'

Reaching the deserts outside of Iquique and biking to the site of their Detour, teams chose between 'Brining' and 'Mining'. In 'Brining', the teams had to use locally-harvested salt to fill a cold tank of water with enough to support and float both members as they read the local paper.

In 'Mining', teams used tools to break open large blocks of harvested salt, searching for a piece containing their next clue rolled up inside. Jason and Amy, Nicole and Travis, Ally and Ashley, Tim and Marie, Tim and Danny, and Nicki and Kim chose 'Brining'; Adam and Brandon, Leo and Jamal, Chester and Ephraim, and Rowan and Shane chose 'Mining'.
8. In Leg 2, teams took a twenty-four hour (plus) bus ride to what South American city?

Answer: Santiago

After their Detour task, teams were told to bike back to their taxis and ride back into Iquique to catch the next bus southward to Chile's capital city, Santiago. This ride inevitably split teams onto three different twenty-four hour rides down the coast, getting them into Santiago in the early evening. Upon their arrival, teams had to make their way to the city square known as Plaza de Armas to find their next clue box.
9. In Chile in Leg 2, team members needed to shine which of the following for locals during the Road Block?

Answer: Shoes

Arriving at Plaza des Armas in Santiago, Chile, teams needed to complete their Road Block task for the second leg. For this one, one member of each team needed to find a marked shoe shine station in the nearby streets and shine one passer-by's shoes. Once this was done they would need to properly pack their mobile cart and wheel it to Merced 738, several blocks away, to receive their next clue. Only when the cart was properly secured would they continue. Amy, Chester, Adam, Leo, Nicole, Danny, Marie, Nicki, Ashley, and Rowan completed this Road Block.
10. Which team was eliminated in Chile in Leg 2?

Answer: Rowan and Shane

After completing the Road Block, teams were told to take a taxi out of Santiago to the town of San José de Maipo, specifically to the nature reserve of Cascada de las Animas where they would be able to check into their second Pit Stop of the race. Although Leo and Jamal arrived first, a taxi issue caused Chester and Ephraim to take the lead and win themselves a trip for two to the Turks and Caicos Islands courtesy of Travelocity.

Despite a fighting chance after several bad moves earlier on in the leg, it was 'Bingo Ladies' Rowan and Shane who arrived last and were eliminated.
