Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 11, teams flew from Indonesia to which Japanese city?

Answer: Tokyo

In Leg 11, the four remaining teams were told to fly from Bandung on the island of Java in Indonesia to Tokyo, the capital city of Japan. Although not all of the teams ended up in Tokyo at the same time, everyone had to find their first clue waiting on the grounds of the Gotokuji Temple in the Setagaya district of Tokyo, a sacred place home to thousands of Maneki Neko figurines.

This would be their Detour-- the last one of the race.
2. One of the Detour tasks in Leg 11 involved joining in a Japanese game show.

Answer: True

The Detour in Leg 11 was a choice between 'Knock It Down' and 'Call It Up'. In 'Knock It Down', teams needed to head to Tokyo Media City where they had to join in a game of human bowling. Leo and Jamal and Tim and Marie did this absurd game to get their next clue. Nicole and Travis and Jason and Amy, meanwhile, ended up performing 'Call It Up', in which they had to strip down to their bathing suits and hop into a local art installation involving a flooded phone booth where they had to pick up the phone and listen for a message.

When they relayed their message to their partner and that message was relayed to a judge across the park they could obtain their next clue.
3. During the Speed Bump task in Leg 11 (in Japan), the participating team had to learn how to trap which of these rogue creatures?

Answer: Rhino

After the Detour, teams needed to head to Shinjuku Central Park and it was there that Leo and Jamal found their Speed Bump task, incurred for placing last in the previous non-elimination leg. For this task, in one of the more absurd turns on the show, they needed to join a local task force and learn the proper method for subduing and trapping a rhino that escaped from the zoo (complete with mock rhino). Once they properly netted the rhino they could continue with the race.
4. In Leg 11, the Japanese Road Block task forced team members to construct which of these?

Answer: Robots

At Shinjuku Central Park, the teams found their Road Block task and one person had to be selected to construct a robot using a tiny model and large, cumbersome, cardboard piping. Amy, Nicole, Leo, and Marie all jumped in to complete this Road Block task, ultimately finding it difficult to manage under the weight of the gigantic creation.

After the task was complete, the teams had to head to the Shibuya Scramble Crossing to find their next clue in a special mobile vending machine wandering the streets.
5. Which team was eliminated in Japan in Leg 11?

Answer: Leo and Jamal

Finding their clue at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, teams were told to proceed on foot to their next Pit Stop, the Konnō Hachimangū Shrine (which was also the first Pit Stop of "The Amazing Race 15"). Here, Tim and Marie won their third leg of the race, this time taking with them a trip for two to Aruba courtesy of Travelocity.

It also secured their spot in the finals. After a rough Road Block (considering the help between Amy and Nicole) and having fallen behind during the Speed Bump, Leo and Jamal were last to arrive on the mat and they were the final eliminated team.
6. To which U.S. state did teams fly in the final leg of the race?

Answer: Alaska

Leaving the final Pit Stop at the Konnō Hachimangū Shrine in Tokyo, Japan (at about the same time), the final three teams were told to fly to their final destination city: Juneau, Alaska. As is usually the case, all three teams were sent over the Pacific on the same flight, arriving in Juneau the next morning. Upon their arrival, the teams had to make their way by taxi to a ferry terminal where they would need to take a boat to Mendenhall Valley for their next clue.
7. How many Road Block tasks were found in Leg 12, the final leg of the race?

Answer: One

Reaching Mendenhall Valley, teams located their next clue, a Road Block task, which would turn out to be the last one in this race. For this task, one member of each team-- Amy, Marie, and Nicole-- needed to hop into a bush plane and, using a sack of flour, hit a target marked on the ground. If they could do so at sixty miles per hour they could receive their next clue. For some this took only a couple of turns...for others, dozens.
8. Which of these items did teams need to use during the course of Leg 12?

Answer: A kayak

After completing the Road Block, teams we told to hop into a helicopter which would fly them to Norris Glacier and here, after taking an icy hike through a glacier they had to smash through an ice wall to find their next clue. This specified that they would need to use the nearby marked kayaks to paddle across a lake near Hoonah, Alaska to find their next clue on the bank on the other side.

This would grant them passage on another helicopter ride to Douglas Island where they would be able to find another taxi.
9. In Leg 12, the teams' final challenge, a memory puzzle, involved which of the following?

Answer: Currencies

After making their way back to Juneau, teams needed to take a taxi into the Blueberry Hills Trailhead where they would find their last clue box. This would be the memory challenge for this race and it would involve constructing totem poles out of puzzle pieces on the ground and raising them to spell out the currencies, in order, of the nine countries visited over the course of the race: Peso, Euro, Krone, Zloty, Euro, Dirham, Rupiah, Yen, Dollar.

When this was done, they could receive their final clue.
10. Which team won "The Amazing Race 23"?

Answer: Jason and Amy

After the final task was complete, teams could proceed via taxi to the Finish Line at the Outer Point Trail at the very end of the North Douglas Highway. Here, hopping out of their cab, they could proceed on foot to Phil and the finishing platform. The winners this season were Jason and Amy who, after only one first place win and half a dozen second places, found victory where it counted, winning the million dollar prize.

They were followed by Tim and Marie in second place and Nicole and Travis in third.
