Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On an uninhabited planet, Ensign Hoshi Sato and the ship's chief engineer are surveying the ruins of a vanished civilization. Who was with Sato?

Answer: Commander Tucker

Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) and Commander Charles Tucker III (Connor Trinneer) have an extensive set of 4,000-year-old ruins to explore complete with examples of hieroglyph-type indecipherable inscriptions all over the different chamber walls. They don't have a lot of time before they are contacted by Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) about a dangerous incoming storm, requiring them to return to the shuttlepod and return to the ship.
2. The away team's exploration is cut short by what kind of approaching storm, known for its dangerous polaric energy?

Answer: Diamagnetic

Despite Hoshi's protestations, Captain Archer stresses that the diamagnetic storm has dangerous discharges that can short circuit a shuttlepod, and that a person's nervous system would fare no better. Before they can make their way back to the shuttlepod, however, another, even bigger incoming storm forces them to abandon their original plan in favour of using the ship's transporter. And while the transporter has been used to move people in the past, it is still a relatively new, and often untrusted technology. Hoshi mentions to Trip that taking apart and reassembling more than five trillion molecules is "a pretty big jigsaw puzzle. What if some other pieces get put in the wrong place?"
3. The storm forces the two officers to abandon their shuttlepod and return to the Enterprise by way of transporter, but they can only go one at a time. Does Hoshi transport up to the ship first?

Answer: No

Because of the storm's polaric energy, the two officers are required to transport one at a time. In an effort to ease Hoshi's fears, Trip offers to use the transporter first. Upon safely arriving aboard the Enterprise, Hoshi follows Trip through the process, and everything seems to go smoothly and without incident.

But soon afterwards, Hoshi begins to feel strange and notice small, unnerving things (like thinking that a small birthmark wasn't in quite the same spot).
4. Later that day, in the mess hall, some of the crew tell a 'ghost story' about a man who disappeared while testing the first long-range transport (of 100 meters). What was this man's name?

Answer: Cyrus Ramsey

Upon hearing the story, Hoshi is confused and wonders why she has never heard of 'Cyrus Ramsey' before. Even Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley) claims to know the story after his short nine-month stay on Earth (working at Starfleet Medical through the Interspecies Medical Exchange).

Cyrus Ramsey's 'incident' purportedly happened in the year 2146, just six years prior to the events of this episode.
5. After an unsettled sleep, Hoshi reports late to her duty shift only to find that Commander Tucker and Ensign Mayweather had beamed down to the ruins to retrieve the shuttlepod. What has happened to them?

Answer: Abducted by aliens

Hoshi's day starts off badly by sleeping in, requiring an intercom call from Sub-Commander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), and arriving late for her duty shift. Then, she is surprised to learn that aliens from the planet have abducted Commander Tucker and Ensign Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery), especially since the planet was (she thought) uninhabited. On top of everything else, Hoshi is unable to translate the incoming communication from the abducting aliens, which is what her skillset is all about.
6. When Hoshi is unable to translate an incoming alien message with a 'simple' bi-modal syntax, Captain Archer dismisses her from her duties.

Answer: True

Dejected, Hoshi leaves the bridge as Captain Archer appoints Crewman Baird (portrayed by Morgan H. Margolis) in her place. The reprimand stings even more when she speaks with Sub-Commander T'Pol just an hour later in the mess hall, learning that Baird was able to translate the alien communication and that the whole situation had been resolved.

Hoshi is even more shocked to learn from T'Pol that she has been ordered *permanently* off duty and that Crewman Baird has been named as her replacement.
7. What does Hoshi experience later in her quarters that unsettles her?

Answer: Both of these

Immediately after being dismissed from the bridge, Hoshi returns to her quarters and tries to recover from the unpleasant course of events by taking a shower, but this only leads to more concerns. Firstly, while looking at herself in the mirror, she sees her reflection disappear for a moment. Then, while in the shower, the water seems to pass through her hands as she looks at them.

On her way to the mess hall (where she meets T'Pol), it also seems to her that most other crewmembers don't see her as she is walking through the corridors, and even when she asks T'Pol if she can sit with her, T'Pol doesn't respond until she looks up and sees her standing there, after which she invites Hoshi to sit down as if seeing/hearing her for the first time.
8. While trying to de-stress in the gym, Hoshi suddenly finds herself unable to operate any equipment, and the automatic door won't recognize her presence. What does she do?

Answer: She falls asleep on the gym floor

As in her quarters, Hoshi sees her reflection disappear again, and when she tries to lift up weights and operate the door controls, her hand passes right through them. Despite these instances of phasing through solid materials, Hoshi is still able to stand (and lie down on) the floor, and seems unable or unwilling to phase through the door or the walls... perhaps due to a mental limitation?

At a loss for how to deal with the situation, Hoshi simply curls up on the floor and falls asleep, waiting for someone else to come in.
9. Seemingly invisible to everyone else, Hoshi discovers two aliens that only she can see. What are they doing?

Answer: Planting bombs

Eventually, T'Pol and Tucker come looking for Hoshi in the gym, and neither is able to see her. When she follows them to Sickbay, she overhears Dr. Phlox saying that he belatedly discovered that her sub-cellular membranes had been degrading, and when they go back to the gym to do an examination, Phlox declares that Hoshi is dead and her remains only a residue.

While this is happening, Hoshi's catches sight of two aliens planting bombs at various points in the ship, and quickly realizes that she is the only one who can see them. She tries to warn Captain Archer about it, and figures out that she is able to affect electrical fields. By moving her hand in and out of a light panel, she tries to pass along a message using Morse code, but Archer (and T'Pol) dismisses it as imagination.
10. Hoshi watches the aliens leave by means of a portable transporter and she follows them, only to rematerialize on the Enterprise's transporter pad. Everything she thought had happened over a full day was just a hallucination, and in reality she had been trapped in the pattern buffer because of the surface storm. How long?

Answer: 8.3 seconds

After jumping on the aliens' portable transporter, Hoshi materializes on the Enterprise's transporter platform, only to learn that everything she had experienced since leaving the planet was just a hallucination, and that she had been in the pattern buffer an inordinately long time... 8.3 seconds.

And when Hoshi mentions Cyrus Ramsey to Tucker and Lieutenant Reed (Dominic Keating), they have no idea what she is talking about.
