Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An away team of three officers takes a shuttlepod down to the planet surface to make contact with the colony. Who was NOT part of the away team?

Answer: Dr. Phlox

Archer, Tucker and T'Pol are quickly met by two of the miners, including their leader, Tessic. Archer explains that they had tried to hail the colony from orbit, but that there had been no response. Tessic responds by saying that their communications are down, but Archer is still surprised at how they don't seem to want to do any business with potential new buyers.

The senior crew members were portrayed by Scott Bakulas (Captain Jonathan Archer), Connor Trinneer (Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III) and Jolene Blalock (Sub-Commander T'Pol).

Tessic was played by Larry Cedar.
2. What is the colony mining that the Enterprise crew is interested in purchasing?

Answer: Deuterium

Deuterium is an isotope of of hydrogen with one neutron, also called 'heavy hydrogen'. In "Star Trek", deuterium is used in an admixture with tritium (another isotope of hydrogen with TWO neutrons) as the 'fuel' used in antimatter engines.

With their recent ship damage, Tucker explains that most of the ship's reserve of deuterium was lost. Archer adds that they only have two weeks' worth left. Despite their obvious need, Tessic offers up multiple excuses to try to get the Enterprise officers to leave.
3. Anxious to make a deal, Captain Archer offers the services of his engineers to help with repairing the broken pumps that are slowing the miners' production. What else do the miners demand before agreeing to an exchange?

Answer: Power cells and medical supplies

Captain Archer reasons with Tessic that their help repairing the broken-down deuterium pumps will increase their yield, allowing them to make up for the shortfall from their deal. Even with that offer, Tessic bargains hard for the exchange, wanting more power cells than Archer is willing to part with. Only after E'Lis, one of Tessic's colleagues, suggests medical supplies do they finally agree on 200 litres of deuterium in exchange for four power cells plus whatever medical supplies can be spared.

E'Lis was played by Bari Hochwald.
4. When Commander Tucker returns to the shuttlepod to grab his tools to look at the broken pumps, what does he unexpectedly find?

Answer: A young boy

Named Q'ell, the young boy is sitting in the pilot's seat of the shuttlepod, pretending to operate the controls. Tucker engages with him in friendly conversation and even offers to give him a tour of the Enterprise, if it is allowed.

It is learned later on that Q'ell is an orphan. He was played by Jesse James Rutherford.
5. The Enterprise crew is given a deadline of two days to complete repairs or to leave with nothing, but then a ship is spotted approaching the system. What type of ship?

Answer: Klingon

Ensign Mayweather sees the Klingon ship coming on the Enterprise's scanners before they, themselves are seen, and Captain Archer orders Travis to keep the Enterprise out of sight.

Captain Archer rightly assumes that this is the 'client' that the miners are waiting for, and Tessic convinces the Enterprise officers to stay out of sight as the Klingons beam down.

Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery.
6. The newcomers turn out to be marauders - they are extorting the miners through threat of violence. With the shipment not ready for them, Tessic convinces the marauders that the broken pumps are being repaired and the full amount will be ready with just a little more time. How long a time do the marauders allow them?

Answer: Four days

Korok, the leader of the Klingon marauders, demands even more deuterium than the original demand, due to the delay by Tessic and his miners. Even so, Tessic plans on filling the demand, and tells Captain Archer to just take his 200 litres of deuterium and leave. Experience has forced them to swallow this bitter pill, as the marauders killed a number of the miners (including Q'ell's father) the last time they tried to resist.

Korok was portrayed by Robertson Dean.
7. Archer initially agrees to leave, as per Tessic's request, but reconsiders and returns to the planet with an offer to help with their greater problem. Does T'Pol agree that such 'interference' is permissible?

Answer: Yes

T'Pol agrees that the miners are not a 'culture' in and of themselves, as they are spacefaring settlers simply running an operation on the planet. However, she does caution the captain that any help they might give the miners would probably only make the situation worse, should the Klingons return again in the future, with no Enterprise there to help.

Either way, Archer goes back to Tessic to offer their help, presenting an option that could keep the Klingons away.
8. Archer and his senior officers suggest deception to draw the marauders into a trap, drawing them into an area where the volatile wellheads can be ignited. How do they accomplish this?

Answer: By moving the entire modular encampment a few hundred meters away

Captain Archer, Commander Tucker and Ensign Mayweather help move all of the buildings away from the wellheads, and also disguise the wellheads themselves so that they look like a part of the terrain. The plan has most of the miners (and Enterprise crew members) hiding in the hilly terrain outside the encampment, on the opposite side of the now-hidden wellheads from the structures.

When the Klingons beam down to the 'fake' site, attacking miners are to draw them towards the hills and onto the wellheads in the process.
9. Various Enterprise officers begin to provide training to the miners to prepare them for the marauders' return. Which of these is not a subject taught?

Answer: Emergency first aid

Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Sato work with the miners on their marksmanship. Sub-Commander T'Pol teaches them about the Klingon bat'leth and mek'leth techniques along with some Vulcan 'strike avoidance' techniques, specifically for avoiding the Klingons' tactics.
10. With an effective plan, the marauders are defeated and humiliated. When Tessic declares, "We aren't afraid of you anymore," what does their leader exclaim before in reply?

Answer: "We can find deuterium anywhere. Yours isn't fit for a garbage scow."

The miners proved themselves to be too much for the small group of Klingon bullies to handle. Without an easy advantage, the marauders decide to save face and move on to other, easier prey.

As a result (although, not by intent), the Enterprise and her crew receive a much larger delivery of deuterium, in thanks for their help. And Q'ell gets a copy of the Enterprise schematics to fuel his dreams.
