Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Archer, Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Sato have just returned from an away mission and are undergoing decontamination under Dr. Phlox's oversight when one of them realizes that a communicator is missing. Whose?

Answer: Lieutenant Reed

The three of them do a thorough search, through all of their gear and in the shuttlepod, but it is quickly determined that Lt. Reed's communicator is, indeed, missing. Sub-Commander T'Pol is quick to remind the captain that they cannot let advanced technology contaminate the culture on the planet below.

Captain Jonathan Archer was portrayed by Scott Bakula, Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating, Ensign Hoshi Sato was acted by Linda Park, Dr. Phlox by John Billingsley, and Jolene Blalock played the role of Sub-Commander T'Pol.
2. Ensign Sato is able to use an inverse carrier wave to locate the communicator's power signature on the planet. To how small of an area is she able to narrow down the search?

Answer: Three city blocks

Ensign Sato is unable to pinpoint the energy signal closely enough to use the transporter, but she is able to narrow it down to three city blocks. Looking at the screen, Lt. Reed recognizes a square with a fountain and a nearby tavern that they visited, and suggests that the communicator might have fallen out of his pocket when they sat down in the tavern.
3. Archer and Reed return to the planet and make their way back to the tavern where they believe the communicator was left. Is it there?

Answer: Yes

When they arrive, Archer and Reed sit at the same booth they occupied previously, but Reed doesn't find the communicator there. Discretely, he then uses his scanner to narrow its location to the back of the tavern where the rooms are. Trying to be inconspicuous, they make their way to a hallway off the main room and pinpoint the communicator's location behind a locked door.

They decide to wait for someone to exit the room, but before they can get back to their seats, they are taken into custody by a number of military men.
4. The two officers are detained and the situation is worsened when their captors find more technology in their possession, including scanners and a phase-pistol. What enemy group does Pell, their interrogator, believe they are working with?

Answer: The Alliance

Pell's first thought is that Archer and Reed are spies for the Alliance, but neither of the men give up any information confirming or denying his suspicions. He sends a message for a superior by the name of General Gosis to come and interrogate them.

Nothing is revealed about the military that has captured Archer and Reed in the episode, apart from them being their own nation-state under the leadership of a charismatic man named Kultarey.

Pell was portrayed by Tim Kelleher.
5. Captain Archer and Lt. Reed are brought to a detention center where they are to be interrogated by General Gosis. While perusing their confiscated devices, who did Gosis hear trying to contact Captain Archer through the communicator?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

When Archer and Reed are brought before General Gosis, he already knows that one of them is a captain and thus assumes that they are military (and Alliance spies). But while Archer admits that T'Pol was referring to him, he tries to convince Gosis that they are not military.

When the two Enterprise officers refuse to give any answers regarding the captured devices, Gosis has Pell strike them. The questioning continues as Gosis tries to determine their motives for being in the city, suggesting that they are here to assassinate Chancellor Kultarey. More silence brings more violence, which reveals something unexpected.
6. General Gosis discovers that his prisoners have been surgically altered with prosthetics, but what discovery causes him to call for Dr. Temec to do a complete examination?

Answer: They have red blood

The only visible difference that the Enterprise away team needed to make was the addition of some forehead ridges to match the planet's inhabitants, but it turns out that there are a number of differences, internally.

The discovery that Archer and Reed had red blood was a shock to the interrogators, and General Gosis immediately called for Dr. Temec to do a full examination to see what other differences there might be.

Finding a completely different internal organ arrangement and a hemoglobin based on iron (a toxic element), the doctor concludes that they must be alien. This conclusion is further solidified when a report comes in with a picture of their shuttlepod in flight.

Gosis was played by Francis Guinan and Dr. Temec was portrayed by Brian Reddy.
7. All of the evidence points to Archer and Reed being aliens, but they explain their different physiology as being genetic enhancements to make them better soldiers. Which of these is NOT one of the enhancements that Lt. Reed claims they have?

Answer: Increased speed and strength

In addition to explaining away the biological differences, they also claim that the image of the shuttlepod is actually a highly experimental stealth aircraft made of a composite alloy invisible to their tracking systems.

They also claim that they are just prototypes, along with their devices. But all of this information only encourages Dr. Temec to want to do more exploration... through study of their organs through an autopsy.
8. Commander Tucker suggests that a rescue could be mounted through the use of their captured Suliban cell ship (from the Season 2 opening episode). What technology does it have that Tucker thinks could help?

Answer: It can cloak

Before they are able to use the cell ship, Commander Tucker and Ensign Mayweather have to figure out how to get its cloaking technology working. Tucker has worked on it a little here and there since they acquired the vessel, but hasn't yet figured it out.

In the process of their tinkering, they mange to activate the cloaking technology, but in the process Tucker's arm is irradiated, causing it to become invisible from the elbow down. When Dr. Phlox looks at it, he advises to just wait for the radiation to subside, and to wear a glove in the meantime.

Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery.
9. Ensign Mayweather pilots the cell ship along with Tucker and T'Pol in order to effect a rescue. They arrive just in time to prevent the execution of Archer and Reed. By what method were they about to be executed?

Answer: Hanging

As the two men are about to be strung up, Captain Archer attempts to plead for the life of Lieutenant Reed, but it is to no avail as their nooses are affixed around their necks.

T'Pol and Tucker seemingly leap out of nothing as the cell ship lands in the yard of the detention center where the hanging is about to take place. A firefight ensues, but the Enterprise phase-pistols are more than the enemy soldiers are able to handle, and they quickly collect the two men.
10. Who goes to retrieve the devices that General Gosis had confiscated?

Answer: Captain Archer

In true form, Captain Archer feels the weight of responsibility for the whole situation, and he ensures that their technology is all collected. Unfortunately, the damage to the pre-warp civilization has been done.
