The story begins as Jack and his brother, Sean, are in a rowboat in the middle of open water. The boat starts to tip as Sean reaches for his baseball cap, just off to the side of the boat and Jack warns him that he's reaching too far. Sure enough, the boat tips over and both brothers are thrown overboard. While Jack rushes to grab the boat, Sean struggles to keep afloat, clearly unable to swim. Although Jack reaches out to grab his brother, his one grab for his hand slips and Sean is left to sink to the seafloor. Sean wakes up from his nightmare, clearly shaken, but since it's morning he makes his way down to the bathroom to freshen up.

The story opens with a young woman walking down a forest road late at night. Although it's raining, no cars will give her a ride, so she trudges onward. As she continues, she hears the sound of a horse neighing behind her, and she turns around to see two men in colonial suits on horseback chasing her. She drops her backpack and runs, but before she can escape, they swing their sword, decapitating her. A family drives along during the day. While the daughter, Amy, in the back licks at a melting ice cream, the family listens to a man rant about politics and the media over the radio. Amy asks to turn off the station as the man is giving her a headache, and they agree. When they finally arrive at their destination, their new house, Amy says that it has always given her the creeps.

The story opens with Edgar Allen Poe dictating his most recent work to his wife, Virginia, as she lay in bed with her cat, Pluto. Poe finishes his story and Virginia calls it his best work yet, but as he goes to stroke her hair, Pluto claws at him. Virginia just says that Pluto must not like poetry while Edgar tosses the cat onto the floor. The two of them proceed to make love, but while Edgar begins to kiss Virginia, she coughs onto her pillow. Edgar asks if she's okay and she insists that she's fine, blaming it on the cat hair. When he looks over though, he finds blood on the pillow.

The story begins with Kent and his son in the middle of the street. Kent's son holds an ice cream treat and its wrapper in his hand while Kent tells him not to eat it; it's bad for him. Kent's son disagrees saying 'they say it's the best ice cream in the whole world', and before Kent can take it from his hands, his son takes a bite out of it. While his son eats the treat, a pool of melted ice cream forms where Kent once stood. An ice cream truck slowly drives down a suburban road covered in a dense mist. Some time later, Kent's funeral is performed, and a speech is given by Papa Joe. He states that he knew Kent from when he was about his son's size, and they were in a group called 'The West End Bunch', which they named after the movie 'The Wild Bunch'. Also, Layne, another member of the group, is with them at the funeral, and he spies a rough looking man watching from behind the trees nearby. After the funeral, Layne says that it was Virgil, who evidently never left town. As they leave the cemetery, Kent's wife says that he never should've come back to town, and that it should have been him who was killed. As Layne drives home, he drives past a hill that he remembers from his youth, where the ice cream truck used to park.

The story opens with a couple driving down an empty road at night. Cliff drives the car while his wife, Abbey, talks about the fact that she's quitting smoking, ending with her last cigarette right then and there. Cliff says that he is happy for her, and that he couldn't be more pleased with the fact since he wants her to be around for a long time. He states that he'll never let her go. Abbey quickly takes off her belt and turns around to fetch something from the back seat, but as Cliff rounds the corner, the car hits a fallen tree, and though Cliff is buckled tightly into his seat, protected by airbags, Abbey goes through the windshield as the car flips over. Cliff struggles, but manages to get himself out of the car after the crash, only to find Abbey in front of the overturned vehicle, and as he calls 911, neither of them notice the gasoline dripping onto her. Soon, the car sets on fire, and Abbey is set ablaze with it.

The story opens with Rob, an unpublished writer in desperate need of money and a place to live. He gets a call from the Highberger House, which has finally had a room opening. Upon his arrival, he is led up the stairs, through a library, and into the office by Ms. Nancy Bloom, the landlady responsible for calling him. Rob states that he is glad that a spot has finally opened up, but Ms. Bloom says that it was at the expense of a recent suicide; the previous tenant had his work (which she notes was garbage, but his heart was in it) rejected more than thirty times. She states that Highberger House was introduced in the thirties to allow unpublished writers to hone their craft and get works on the shelves. She asks if he's in love and he says that he's only focusing on his books. She hands him the key to Room 217 and tells him it's one flight up.

The story begins in Texas in July. A man goes outside with a hose to clean up a bloody stain on his back porch, and his neighbour, who initially offers him lemonade, discovers this, although the man is not initially phased by the notion of what he is doing. While cleaning out red stains on his oven door, the man hears the doorbell ring, and answers it to find the police who ask if they can take a look around. He lets them in and they find bloodied clothing in the clothes hamper in the bedroom. As well, the shower curtain is missing from the bathroom, and on the floor is a blood-soaked towel. The officers find three bodies in the garage; one is elderly, one is middle-aged, and another is just a teenager. As they bring him to their cruiser, they ask him why he did it, and he says that the Lord told him to clean up the place, so he did. The neighbours who called the police watch from their front door, and while the wife is shocked by this, her husband says that it was unfortunate for the man.

The story opens with Jake, the owner of a small fur workshop, yelling at his employees for their sub-standard work on recent pelts. Angry with the situation, he decides to leave and go to the local strip joint, at which he is a regular customer. Jake pays one of the bouncers with a small wad of cash and makes his way to the back rooms where a stripper named Shanna is waiting. Opening the door to Room 12, Jake spies a lone chair in the middle of the darkness and takes his seat. Shanna appears from behind a curtain in the back of the room and begins her dance, telling Jake that he smells like rotting flesh. He explains that it's his job, and that one day, it'd make him very rich. He pays her a bit more and she takes off more clothes. When she finally gets near him, he jumps up and forces her to the wall. She fights back and manages to get free of his grasp, picking up the chair and telling him he didn't pay her enough for that. He claims that one day, she'll want to sleep with him, and he departs.

The story opens with a teenage girl, Angelique, as she runs through the forest. Clearly scared, she keeps looking behind her as she weaves her way through the trees to the road. When she finally sets foot on the pavement, she is nearly hit by an oncoming car driven by two people who are on their way to work at a medical clinic. They nearly drive into her, but swerve out of the way just in time. Although Angelique claims that she isn't hurt, she allows them to give her the ride. Arriving at the Lincoln County Womens' Health Service, they instruct a few workers to get Angelique a wheelchair and take her into the building. As they take her inside, she thanks them for finding her when they did and she notices a red van driving up the road to the parking lot. She tells them not to let the van in and they quickly gate off the entrance.

The story begins with Larry, a call center supervisor listening to the calls of his operators in the offices below. As he switches from call to call, he listens for any signs of discontent in both his operators and the consumers, who seem to be having problems operating their software and computers. At one point, Larry comes across on interesting call. As a female caller asks for assistance (but doesn't even know where to put the installation disc), the operator on the other end gets so fed up that he's ready to shout obscenities. Larry terminates the call mere moments before the man is about to blow his top though, and he walks off the job, claiming that he wouldn't have done it. Larry knows otherwise though. When Larry goes home, he continues his woodworking in the garage. He can hear as his wife knits inside the house- the gentle clicking of knitting needles sounds like the sharpening of knives to his ears. That night, Larry passes by his son's room on the way to bed, and as he's about to open the door, he thinks better of himself and walks on.

The story opens with Kerry and Justin, two friends playing video games at Kerry's house. While Kerry plays "Doom 3" on his Xbox 360, Justin angrily speaks with his father over the phone about his family. When he puts down the phone, he jumps onto a PSP and begins playing his game before becoming frustrated with it. Kerry says that Justin promised he would do something adventurous with him, and Justin asks if Kerry wants to see a real dead body. Kerry, not faltering, says that he would, and they head out to Collinswood Funeral Home. They arrive on their skateboards and Kerry says that Justin really wasn't lying; the place is beyond spooky. Justin says that he wanted to come here to see Billy Redford, a boy who died earlier in a car crash and who used to make fun of the two of them. Finally, he says, they'll be able to say that they looked down on someone who made fun of them. When the two of them knock on the door of the funeral home, no one answers, so they let themselves in.

The story begins with an active cul de sac. Outside, the weather is warm and kids play in the street. Sprinkler systems dot the lawns all down the sides and a mailman delivers the post to each individual mailbox. The real story is inside a house near the center of the street though as a single man, Harold, pours acidic chemicals into a pitcher and pours it onto the corpse of an elderly man as he listens to religious music. As he finishes melting the flesh from his victim, the alarm clock rings and he goes to get the mail and eat his lunch. As Harold walks outside, he finds that a couple has moved into a nearby house. They both wave to each other in acknowledgment. When Harold goes back inside, he makes his meal and heads upstairs to find a young girl and a woman watching TV. As they begin a conversation, it is revealed that the two are actually skeletons, and that Harold had been talking to no one at all. He goes on to say that 'Grandpa' will be with them very shortly as the process is taking less time than he anticipated.

This story begins in 1981. A family sits for dinner one evening and the son comments that it's the second time that month that they've had ribs. He says he keeps a chart for it since he's watching his protein intake. His father laughs at this and says grace. The family talks about the events of the day before lightning is seen through the window. The mother says that the storms are coming earlier this year, and that for some reason, everyone in the neighbourhood has been stirred up lately. One neighbour yelled at her earlier over trivial things. The family laughs it off, claiming that the woman who yelled earlier has always been a bit of a nut. The mother quickly goes to the kitchen and asks the son to help her with something. As they leave, the father notices something out the window. Upon entering the kitchen, the son finds a birthday cake for the father, and the mother asks for his help in bringing it out. As the son goes to get the plates, he notices a black, oily substance dripping onto his hand, and as they look to the ceiling, they find a small stain of the substance dripping down.

The story begins with Christopher in a wooden boat with a number of Japanese men. The full boat is steered through the fog until it hits a dead body. The man at the helm mentions that another body has been found in disgust, and says that although they usually sink like lead, this one was probably pregnant. He flips it over with his oar to check, then pushes it aside before the boat moves on. When the boat arrives at its destination, Christopher walks behind the other men, who are eager to begin their nights with the local prostitutes. Christopher walks down the main drag, while a woman plays a stringed instrument in a nearby building, to find all of the women locked in cages, begging for men. He sits down for a moment and looks inside, past the pleading women, to find on girl kneeling in the corner. As he watches, one woman yells at her to do her job and go to the front of the cage. As Christopher watches, an short, old woman comes up behind him and asks if he's American, to which he nods. She asks him if any of her ladies would be good for him, but he mentions that he's looking for a specific girl.

The story opens with a man, Edward Ralston, riding horseback in the dark. As he hitches his horse to a post outside an old house, he notices two graves in the front yard and makes his way to the front door. When he knocks, he is chastised for having a 'woodpecker-like' knock as opposed to the knock of a real man, according to the woman in front of the fireplace inside. He explains that he came to her because she might have some ideas for him. Edward recently had to bury his wife, Samantha, and because this woman, Mrs. Carnation, was once a necromancer, she may have the key to restoring his wife to her mortal life. Mrs. Carnation says that she once dabbled in such things, but no longer does she do so. She also explains that she should make her way to God, and that these things should not be tampered with, for everyone's own good. She decides to go through with the task, only because his love for Samantha is so great, but in order to prove this, she explains that she will tell him the story of Ernst Haeckel, and if he still wants to raise his wife from the dead after hearing the story, they will proceed. He pulls up a chair and listens intently.

In the beginning of this story, a Blue Line bus drives through the country. On the way, the driver aims and runs over a rattlesnake in the road. As he drives on, a wanderer picks up the snake and carries it with him as he walks on. Shortly after, the bus gets a flat tire and is forced to pull over to the side of the road. Everyone gets out to inspect the damages, but one person, Stacia, asks the driver where the closest rest station is. When he replies that it's at least twelve to fourteen miles up the road, she starts walking, insisting that she'll be fine. To show this, she takes out a knife (which she carries because of her violent ex-husband) and she heads on her way. As she leaves, a trucker pulls up to the side of the road and offers to take everyone to the trading post that they already passed. Two of the passengers decide to join him, on the condition that he's not a lunatic (to which he jokes) and the other two stay with the bus for fear that he'll grind them into cat food. The driver stays with his bus.

The story opens with an odd perspective from the eyes of a weird bug. A man takes the creature, examines it, and places it into a small box. Elsewhere, entomologist, Ida Teeter, is in her terrarium-filled apartment preparing for a date with another woman. As she prepares enthusiastically (while dancing to a song), she receives a call from her date who claims that she can't get together because of the bugs; they creep her out too much. Ida cries about this for a while before noticing a small bug crawling up her arm. Ida babies the bug before going to bed. The next day, Ida walks to work (at the McNaughton Museum of Natural History) depressed with the events. As she walks to the elevator, her eyes catch a young woman sketching in the lobby. The two of them awkwardly look at each other before Ida enters the elevator and leaves for her office.

This story opens with a ritual being performed under a full moon. While someone reads from an old spellbook, they cast dirt over a humanlike figure covered in roots and dirt on the ground. Quickly, the dusty air is exhaled from the mouth of the figure and the ceremony ends. The scene flashes to someone looking at pictures of a young girl, Tara, which are next to a bottle of chloroform. Tara, meanwhile, is in class at her all-girls preparatory school, drawing pictures during a lesson. When she is called up for a math question, she ends up getting laughed at by all the other girls, and she runs out of her classroom embarrassedly. Later that day, Tara took her bike and made her way home from school not knowing that a nearby car was watching her. Inside, the driver puts on a pair of rubber gloves, starts up the vehicle, and turns on some classical music. Tara takes a quick trip into an ominously foggy forest with her bike and feels like she's being followed. She looks over her shoulder more than once before and after the car drives by behind her. When she comes up to a clearing, the driver speeds up and drives into her, knocking her off her bicycle. When the driver gets out of the car, Tara exclaims that she's hurt, and needs an ambulance, but instead of help, the driver pulls her to the back of the car and uses the bottle of chloroform to put her out. Before placing her into the back of the van, he tells her that she'll be late for her recital. Quickly, he piles her in and drives away, leaving her bike in the clearing.

This story starts with the sentence "Film is magic, and in the right hands, a weapon." Kirby Sweetman, a rare movie collector, is called to the estate of Mr. Bellinger, who makes himself known as a rare and obscure film collector. When Sweetman arrives (late) he is led to Bellinger's office where he notices the poster for "La Fin Absolue du Monde", a film notorious for its shady history. Kirby recites its past. Originally played at a film festival in Sitges, "La Fin Absolue" was an odd case. After the first screening, the theater erupted in violence, and many people were killed or driven insane as a result. Kirby states that the government took the film from its director, Hans Backovic, and destroyed it not knowing it was the only copy (being a work in progress). Backovic retired from filmmaking altogether because of it. Bellinger points out the error in the story. The government never destroyed the film. Bellinger hires Kirby on in order to get the single copy of the movie since he was supposed to be at that screening. Instead, Bellinger passed up the chance, vying instead for a Vincent Price movie and missing the ordeal. A second time, he went abroad to view a screening, but the show was canceled when the theater it was housed in set on fire. After questioning Bellinger about a prop behind his desk (a pair of large angel wings from the film), Kirby is given a thorough set of records spanning the history of the film and he is shown Bellinger's shocking piece of memorabilia from the film: an angel with its wings cut off. Bellinger does this to prove that the movie is still out there. The angel states that it was once bound to the negatives of the film as soul is to flesh. If it were destroyed, it would know. Kirby agrees with Mr. Bellinger's terms: $200,000, all expenses paid, and two weeks of run-time at Kirby's theater, which is in need of customers.

The story begins at Morgan's Tavern and Grill where a drunk patron, who is playing pool, decides that he needs to use the restroom. His friend takes his shot and tells the man that the restroom is actually out of order, so he heads outside. As he stumbles around to the back of a van, he hears a man screaming from within a large transport truck. Although he nears the door, he doesn't actually decide to open it after the screaming stops. Instead, he turns back around and walks into the bar. After this, the door snaps off the truck, landing further away on the ground. The next morning, a man exits the bar to find the truck still outside. As well, he finds four deer standing near the passenger side door (which has now made its way back onto the truck, although it is badly dented). While he watches, the deer mysteriously disappear in front of his eyes.

The film opens with two people driving down a country road outside Washington D.C. While they speed along, they find a man walking down the road. The woman in the passenger seat causes the driver to swerve the car into the man, and because of this, they hit him and accidentally swerve into the ditch. When they wake up, they find the decapitated head on the hood of the car. It opens its eyes and moans before they turn on the windshield wipers and push the head away. They get out of the car where the man claims he has a broken rib. The woman tries to flag down a caravan, but finds that it contains more undead men. She quickly gets a shotgun from the trunk and begins to shoot them in the legs yelling hysterically. The man says he's sorry, that it's all his fault, that he never should have said anything, and while the woman fumbles with the shotgun, he shoots her in the back of the head.

The story opens with Jamie sitting at a table. His neck is covered in blood yet he has a grin on his face. He proceeds to tell a man that no man has ever loved a woman like he has, because his experience is much different from theirs. The man accuses him of murder an Jamie says that one could call it that, though it wouldn't necessarily be correct. The man asks Jamie to humour him and tell his story again until it makes sense. Jamie begins with what he started with. He woke up, got dressed, and went to work at the Cougar Culinary Laboratory in Chicago. The lab makes artificial flavouring for food additives. When Jamie went to work, he talked to his friend, Wally over dinner. Wally proposed that he take a bachelor's night out and watch his band perform. Since Jamie was hesitant to go, he decided against it and returned to his empty apartment.

"Cigarette Burns", the eighth of the thirteen episodes, followed Kirby Sweetman, a rare film hunter, as he searched for a controversial rare film known as "La Fin Absolute du Monde" for a rich client. Sweetman knows the film's history though. Every time a viewer watches the film, they go mad, murdering others and killing themselves as a result. However, Kirby needs the money to save his theater and carry on in the absence of his recently-deceased wife. As Kirby nears the film, he realizes that he too is being sucked into the film's grasp, and possibly into madness. John Carpenter is a genuine Master of Horror. Before his work on "Cigarette Burns", Carpenter filmed "Halloween", "The Thing", "The Fog", and "Christine", each of which became exceedingly popular in proceeding years. "Halloween" in particular became one of the more successful independent horror films ever made (followed by numerous sequels) and was later remade by Rob Zombie in 2007.

This episode starts with Detective Frank Spivey and his partner sitting in his car eating Chinese food. While his partner, Spacey, stays in the car, Frank gets out for a walk. As Spacey turns up the car radio, Frank walks ahead and hears a woman screaming for help. He shouts for Spacey, but realizes he has little time. Walking up ahead, he notices a woman being pulled along by a crazy older man. Frank quickly follows behind with his gun drawn to where the man has placed the woman over a large barrel. Frank yells to him when he draws a large butcher knife, but the man doesn't back down, saying that 'he has to be finished with her' and that Frank 'doesn't know what she is'. As the man prepares to take his swing, Frank shoots the man in the chest, causing him to drop the knife and fall back to the wall. When Frank goes over to the man, he gasps for air and mentions the name 'Jenifer' before dying. It's hard for Frank to tell if he's made the right choice after, because Jenifer isn't exactly an example of the perfect damsel in distress...

This story opens up with a birthday party. All seems to be going fine until the festivities are interrupted by dark skies. Soon, everyone in the yard is running for the house as something begins to fall on them, burning away their skin. A mother and her two children make it inside and lock the doors to save themselves while everyone else is outside feeling the burn. The mother wakes up in the future, having remembered the scene from a dream. Her daughter mentions that no one has come to their place for a while and asks how they'll keep up. The mother says that their father left them some money and that she doesn't remember her dreams anymore. Later, when they listen to the radio, they are told that the death count in America has reached nine million people from terrorist 'Blizz' attacks, and that New York and L.A. are destroyed.

When she goes to change the radio station, she momentarily looks down to see what she's fumbling with. However, when she looks back up, she finds herself face to face with another car, stopped on the road. She crashes into it head on. The scene flashes back to her on a date with a new guy. The man talks about the world being screwed up. They talk about the meek inheriting the Earth, and the fact that no matter what there will always be problems with the way things are being run. Regardless, Ellen enjoys their date together.

Answer: Dreams in the Witch House

The second episode to air, "H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch House" was directed by frequent Lovecraft-adapter Stuart Gordon (known for "Re-Animator" and "Dagon"). In the episode, a student named Ezra moves into a room in an old house but comes to discover that it has an evil history burdened by witches. When he starts having nightmarish dreams and others start to get into danger, he has to come to his senses and solve the mystery of the ornate building. Stuart Gordon returned in season two, directing "The Black Cat", an Edgar Allan Poe-themed story based on Poe's work of the same name.

Going to the bathroom, Jack runs the tap and cleans himself up in the mirror. When the basin fills however, he finds Sean's hat floating inside. He steps back, breathes, and closes his eyes, but when he opens them again, he finds that the hat is gone. He steps back up to the sink and begins to wash his face, but as he does, a stark white hand reaches up and grabs him. Jack wakes up again, this time in the rowboat in the sea. As he looks beside the boat, Sean's hat is floating in the water. Hesitantly, Jack decides to grab for it, but as he does, Sean's drowned body leaps onto his back. Jack wakes up once more in bed. The phone rings and he rises to get it. It turns out to be Yuri, who asks him if Eiji, her husband, knew anything or sounded odd at work. Jack says no, and Yuri says that she needs to see him. Jack says he'll call her before hanging up and getting ready to go to work.
