Donkey Kong Country 1 Trivia Questions

1. How many different animal companions can you ride in the game?

From Quiz
"Donkey Kong Country" (SNES) Mixture

Answer: Four

Five different animal companions can be utilized in the game but you can only ride four. Squawks the Parrot, who appears in Torchlight Trouble in Gorilla Glacier, is too small for the Kongs to grab onto. Nonetheless, the Kongs can hop onto Rambi the Rhino, Enguarde the Swordfish, Expresso the Ostrich, and Winky the Frog. Expresso and Winky do not appear in subsequent games in the series; "Donkey Kong Country" is both their debut and their swan song.

2. In which region of the game are we if we're riding in a mine cart?

From Quiz Where in "Donkey Kong Country" Are We?

Answer: Monkey Mines

Mine Cart Carnage set the standard for mine carts in "Donkey Kong Country" games and it's no surprise that we're stopping off there. Although relatively easy by series standards, the level appears near the start of the second world, Monkey Mines, which varies in setting from caverns to ancient ruins. Mine Cart Carnage is the first of only a few mine cart levels in the game though they do appear in later stages as well.

3. Chronologically, Gorilla Glacier is in which position on the world map?

From Quiz "DKC" - Gorilla Glacier

Answer: Fourth

Gorilla Glacier is found towards the top of the map, cresting over the snowcapped peak on the island. DK and Diddy need to loop up and over to make their journey, traveling from the Kongo Jungle to the Monkey Mines to the Vine Valley and then into the Gorilla Glacier, a series of snowy, icy levels. It's the fourth of seven major destinations en route to King K. Rool. Halfway there!

4. What is the avian-themed name of the first level in Vine Valley?

From Quiz "DKC" - Vine Valley

Answer: Vulture Culture

Vulture Culture is so named because the majority of enemies faced throughout the course are vultures (a la Master Necky) which fly back and forth (or in place). There are also a number of birds which will throw nuts at the Kongs, always in a single direction. Much of this level involves traversing leaf-strewn paths and crossing large gaps in barrels. As such, Zingers are found throughout the level to make things just a little bit more awkward. Stinkin' bees.

5. In Winky's Walkway, the first stage of the Monkey Mines, what is Winky?

From Quiz "DKC" - Monkey Mines

Answer: Frog

Winky is the third of five animal companions you can find in the game and the first one to feature a level named after them. The stage is relatively simple-- suspended walkways are cloaked in darkness, and only swaying light fixtures illuminate the gloomy surroundings. Winky is found early on in the stage on a high platform; finding him is a big help since, as a frog, he can jump higher than the Kongs normally can. While Winky isn't required to complete the level, he may give a bit more security during the higher jumps.

6. Whereabouts does Kongo Jungle appear on the overall world map?

From Quiz "DKC" - Kongo Jungle

Answer: Near the bottom

Donkey Kong starts the game somewhere slightly off the main track of the map on a spot that isn't visited during the game. He moves ahead, however, northeast on the map, to Kongo Jungle, the starting area of the game and, obviously, the most basic. This area is DK's home; set in a lush jungle it's in one of the bottom reaches on the map towards the coast. Playing through the stages, you head upwards, looping counter-clockwise on the map until you reach King K. Rool's Gangplank Galleon (which also happens to be the first world in "Donkey Kong Country 2".

7. How many extra life balloons can you find on Level One?

From Quiz "Donkey Kong Country"

Answer: six

The six balloons aren't so easy to get. The first three are hidden in the trees above the level, and you need quick jumping abilities to get them all before they float away. The fourth balloon is in the mini bonus level that Rambi needs to bash into. The last two aren't so easy to get, however. At the very end of the level, (providing you have survived long enough with Rambi) jump off the last tree, right over the exit, and jump off Rambi at its peak. There you will find an off screen tire, leading you to two blue balloons, totaling another six lives! All these balloons in total gives you an amazing 12 lives! In only one level!

8. What are the names of the vultures in "DKC" and "DKC2"?

From Quiz 'Donkey Kong Country' Enemies

Answer: Necky

Ok that one was pretty easy, Necky also appeared as a boss in "DKC".

9. What is the subtitle for Donkey Kong Country 2?

From Quiz Donkey Kong Country

Answer: Diddy's Kong Quest

10. Although there are six different stages to the game (plus K. Rool's short stage), only four different creatures appear as bosses. One of them is Necky; which other species appears twice?

From Quiz "Donkey Kong Country" (SNES) Mixture

Answer: Gnawty

Although the six stages of the game are different in theme, the variety of bosses isn't stellar. Kongo Jungle contains Very Gnawty, a beaver, who later reappears in a stronger form as Really Gnawty on Gorilla Glacier. Likewise, master Necky appears worse than before in Chimp Caverns. Queen B. is a Zinger (bee) boss found at the end of Vine Valley while Dumb Drum completes Kremkroc Industries, Inc. In all cases, the Kongs fight on piles and piles of Bananas, all part of their hoard.

11. In Tanked Up Trouble, what's required to successfully pass through the level?

From Quiz "DKC" - Chimp Caverns

Answer: Fuel

Much like the Trick Track Trek level found in Kremkroc Industries Inc., Tanked Up Trouble puts DK and Diddy on a moving platform suspended by a thin wire track. The only difference this time is that the platform needs fuel to keep going; failure to keep the tank full will result in its falling off the track, ending the level simply because the Kongs have nowhere to go. Fuel can be found in marked barrels along the course, usually just out of reach (requiring some clever maneuvering). A full platform will have green lights, but they go out fast.

12. Which animal companion appears in Oil Drum Alley?

From Quiz "DKC" - Kremkroc Industries Inc.

Answer: Rambi

The first stage of Kremkroc Industries Inc. is the first of three in a factory setting, though this one can be mildly frustrating due to the flaming 'OIL' drums scattered around the level. Although the first half of the level involves navigating the metal platforms of the area, the latter half features drums that flicker on and off, topping themselves with fire and putting themselves out at a regular rate. When the Kongs are forced to jump on them and nothing else, it becomes a game of timing. Luckily, Rambi can be found under one of said drums provided the Kongs find a way underneath.

13. In which location in the game are we if there are cannonballs being fired at us?

From Quiz Where in "Donkey Kong Country" Are We?

Answer: Gang-plank Galleon

The only place where we'd be at risk of getting hit by cannonballs is in Gang-plank Galleon, the final location in the game and King K. Rool's last stand, where the final battle occurs. The entire level is a single pirate ship off the coast of Kong Island, and it also acts as the first world in the game's sequel, "Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest". Cannonballs are part of K. Rool's second wave of attacks; they're dropped from above.

14. The further you get in Gorilla Glacier's first level, Snow Barrel Blast, the more what happens?

From Quiz "DKC" - Gorilla Glacier

Answer: The snow falls

This level introduces the Kongs to the frigid mountain setting, and while their arrival isn't much to think about, the stage gets progressively snowier as you go on, blanketing the screen in near whiteout conditions by the time you reach the exit. The level, while not as precarious as some of the later ones in the stage, still forces the Kongs to keep their wits about them as they navigate slippery hills, rotating barrels, and skittish enemies.

15. In Winky's Walkway, certain enemies are able to regenerate continuously thanks to a barrel with what painted on the side?

From Quiz "DKC" - Monkey Mines

Answer: Skull

Adding to the difficulty of this new stage of the game, some new barrels make their first appearance in Winky's Walkway. About halfway through the stage, you'll end up facing Gnawty...after Gnawty...after Gnawty...as they hop out of a skull barrel-- a literal everlasting enemy respawner. The only way to succeed despite these setbacks is to forge (or hop) past them. Fortunately, the level is freakishly short, so you'll only run into a couple of these.

16. The first level of the game is Jungle Hijinxs. What can be found inside Donkey Kong's treehouse?

From Quiz "DKC" - Kongo Jungle

Answer: A one-up balloon

The first level of the game, Jungle Hijinxs, begins with Donkey Kong bursting from his treehouse at the start of the level. Before even beginning the game, you're given the chance to climb back up and reenter the home to find a red one-up balloon; you have to bounce on a really bouncy floor tire to get it though. You can also walk into the cave beneath the treehouse to find the former home of DK's 'Kong Banana Hoard'. Of course, the cave is empty, prompting the adventure ahead, but y'know. Context.

17. What is the name of the boss of World 1?

From Quiz "Donkey Kong Country"

Answer: Very Gnawty

Really Gnawty and Dumb Drum are both bosses that you'll find later in the game, and Extremely Gnawty doesn't exist. I made him up. Very Gnawty is quite easy to beat. You just have to time your jumps to make sure he doesn't squish you!

18. In "DKC2" how many stages are named after enemies excluding bosses?

From Quiz 'Donkey Kong Country' Enemies

Answer: 5

There's Lockjaw's Locker and Kannon's Klaim. The three most people would forget would be Klobber Karnage, Screech's Sprint, and Krochead Klamber. Yes Krocheads are considered enemies.

19. What is the very first level of the game called?

From Quiz Donkey Kong Country 1

Answer: Jungle Hijinx

In this level, we meet Donkey and Diddy.

20. Rambi the Rhino appears in the Manic Mincers level. What type of stage is this?

From Quiz "DKC" - Chimp Caverns

Answer: Underground cavern

As this stage of the game is known as Chimp Caverns, it only makes sense to continue through dark, musty caves. The Manic Mincers level is no exception to the rule, and is actually quite interesting in that the whole thing is covered by large, spinning, spiked wheels which can't be stopped, even by Rambi's horn. As such, Rambi is really only useful for plowing through enemies found in between the mincers, leaving one less thing to worry about as you cross the narrow ledges between swirling obstacles of imminent death.

21. In which stage are we if we're able to visit Vulture Culture and Tree Top Town?

From Quiz Where in "Donkey Kong Country" Are We?

Answer: Vine Valley

Vine Valley is the third stage of the game, and reaching here generally means we know what we're doing, having gone through most of the basics in the first two stages. Both Vulture Culture and Tree Top Town are found in the first portion of the stage-- they're the first two respective stages-- and both have distinct forest themes. Later levels of Vine Valley take us to a forest temple and, eventually, underwater before a face-off against a giant bee.

22. What is the name of the animal companion who can be used in Jungle Hijinxs, the game's first level?

From Quiz "DKC" - Kongo Jungle

Answer: Rambi & Rambi the Rhino & Rambi the Rhinoceros

Rambi, a mainstay throughout the "Donkey Kong" series beginning with this game, is a rhino who, when used, can plow through enemies with brute force and his powerful horn. Although Rambi doesn't appear until mid-way through Jungle Hijinxs and the majority of the stage is performed on flat ground with minimal pitfalls, he can still charge through foes, particularly the Gnawty beavers lined up shortly after you open his crate. Rambi reappears in later stages of the game, of course.

23. What is the name of the Monkey that owns the Plane Rental Service?

From Quiz "Donkey Kong Country"

Answer: Funky Kong & Funky

Funky Kong's flights are very useful. They can take you to any level in the entire game, free of charge! All you have to do is hop into a barrel plane, and you're off! You can go wherever you want, even to another airport.

24. In which level in Chimp Caverns do the lights switch on and off?

From Quiz Donkey Kong Country 1

Answer: Loopy Lights

The obstacles that Donkey and Diddy encounter in the level are very tricky! Stop and Go Station is a level in another area called Monkey Mines. It is not a light, but a stop light level with Kremlins stopping on red and moving on green.

25. What is Donkey Kong's signature move?

From Quiz Donkey Kong Country

Answer: Roll

26. What is something that can't be done in Elevator Antics?

From Quiz "DKC" - Kremkroc Industries Inc.

Answer: Control the elevators

While Elevator Antics seems like a regular cave level on the surface, it's naive to think that a level so deep into the game wouldn't have a trick or two up its sleeve. The first half of the level involves narrow corridors, snakes, and Zingers, while the last half involves moving elevator platforms, rising and lowering between narrow cliffs and being blocked by more of the same enemies (and large ground enemies like Klumps). I won't even get into the frustration of being unable to crawl faster under tight passages to avoid regenerating snakes.

27. In which major stage of "Donkey Kong Country" are we if we're at risk of walking into a snowstorm?

From Quiz Where in "Donkey Kong Country" Are We?

Answer: Gorilla Glacier

Gorilla Glacier, the fourth stage of the game, takes us to the tip-top of Kong Island for an adventure in the ice and snow. While most of this stage is set outside in near-blizzard conditions, the trail actually leads us through caverns and icy waters as well. Some levels, like Snow Barrel Blast, actually take place during a blizzard (and in well-timed barrels) but progressing through the levels will likely lighten the snow up a bit. Luckily, we aren't hindered by the cold.

28. Which animal companion can be found in Ice Age Alley?

From Quiz "DKC" - Gorilla Glacier

Answer: Expresso

Expresso the Ostrich makes a triumphant return in this blizzard-themed stage, but can only be found if you end up hopping into a barrel to a secret location. He does, however, come in handy; the level consists of many large gaps between slippery inclined platforms, most of which are crossed on swinging ropes. If he can avoid enemy shots, you can flutter through a good chunk of the level. The further along in the level, the storm will also loosen up, which helps considering.

29. The majority of the Forest Frenzy level is crossed via which means?

From Quiz "DKC" - Vine Valley

Answer: Ropes

In one of the more challenging rope-themed levels yet, much of Forest Frenzy involves holding on as ropes pull Donkey Kong and Diddy across the stage. In this particular level, the ropes not only swing from side to side, they also hang straight down and slide across the stage, passing through Zingers and flying vultures (Neckies) without a real care. By the end of the level you'll be side-swinging moving targets with (erm...) ease.

30. In the Bouncy Bonanza level, what exactly is 'bouncy'?

From Quiz "DKC" - Monkey Mines

Answer: Both of these

Bouncy Bonanza, taking place entirely in a system of caverns within the Monkey Mines, forces the Kongs to be bouncy quite early on; the course has several different spots containing bouncy tires and, in some cases, rollable tires (which you can push along the ground) to reach high-up spots or items. Enemies will also be bouncy-- Kritters will have a tendency to jump higher than normal in this stage to pose an extra threat, so timing is key. To add to the general bounciness of it all, you can also find Winky the Frog in a hidden cavern.
