Pokemon Legends Trivia Questions

1. Zekrom's ability looks fairly useless at first glance, but it was absolutely crucial to turning it into a fearsome wallbreaker in fifth generation Ubers. Zekrom's signature, exclusive ability was Teravolt. What does Teravolt do?

From Quiz
Competitive Pokémon History - Zekrom

Answer: Ignores the target's ability

Teravolt had two critical applications- ignoring Lugia's Multiscale and ignoring Skarmory's Sturdy. This seems, and frankly is, niche, but those two targets were physical walls whose weakness to Electric meant they could not stand up to Zekrom. Lugia would've had a chance thanks to Multiscale, but Teravolt turns the tables on it and made Zekrom into one of, if not the only Pokémon capable of consistently breaking Lugia to support its team.

2. The vaguely devilish, aquatic Golduck is said to be mistaken for what monster that sounds like it might be a Greek letter?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 4

Answer: kappa

The kappa is essentially a monster created to explain the appearance of a drowned body. It is child-sized and slimy, with webbed appendages and a beak-like mouth. The crown of its head holds water, and a kappa will lose its power if that water ever dries out. Golduck, while primarily based on a duck, is said to be mistaken for a kappa and has many of a kappa's fiendish touches. Its appendages are clawed and webbed, and it is bipedal and about the size of a fully grown person. Though it is a pure water type, it can learn many psychic attacks and confounding moves, perhaps a reference to the kappa's supernatural powers.

3. "A duck comes bearing green onions" is a Japanese saying that could invoke a stroke of surprise luck or which Pokemon?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 3

Answer: Farfetch'd

Much like a hen brooding viper eggs, a duck bearing green onions originally referred to somebody nurturing an unpleasant fate. It eventually took on a different perspective and brought to mind the person coming across such a duck -- an event that would be quite fortuitous but admittedly... farfetched. Farfetch'd is a very straightforward interpretation of the saying, as it is a duck that carries around a green onion (or alternately, a stick). The stick is used like a sword to attack foes, and is in fact an in-game item that increases its critical hit ratio.

4. Kamaitachi are whirlwind-riding weasels with nails the size of sickles. If that sounds familiar, it might be because it also describes which Pokemon?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 2

Answer: Sneasel and Weavile

In old art, Kamaitachi appear to be weasels with sickeningly-large claws. They are said to inflict nasty yet painless wounds with their claws. They often move about places by riding around on a whirlwind. Sneasel and Weavile are weasel-like Pokemon with unusually large claws, and are said to attack opponents with ice and dark wind. Kamaitachi stories often come from cold, mountainous areas. Sneasel and Weavile are dark/ice types, and in the "Pokemon" games are normally found around mountains or areas that are snowing. Sneasel evolves into Weavile with the use of a Razor Claw.

5. Jinmenju are trees that grow human faces. The faces are constantly laughing, and fall off if they laugh too hard. This is very much akin to which Pokemon?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 1

Answer: Exeggutor

Jinmenju are mysterious trees that grow laughing faces. Exeggutor is a coconut tree with three faces, which on occasion fall off and become Exeggcute. Much like a jinmenju, an Exeggutor's heads are independent of, but amicable towards, each other. Exeggutor is a grass/psychic type, as might be expected of a Pokemon based on a supernatural tree. Much like a tree, Exeggutor is large and not very fast, but it has strong offensive capabilities.

6. "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" is set in the Hisui region which is the historical counterpart to which main game series region?

From Quiz Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Answer: Sinnoh

Hisui is the historical name for Sinnoh, the region visited in "Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl" (3DS). The game takes place during the time when Hisui was being settled by the Diamond and Pearl clan, a millennium after the first humans lived there.

7. Absol looks a lot like the Bai Ze as depicted on a 17th Century scroll. Keeping Absol's color in mind, what does "Bai Ze" translate as?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 4

Answer: white marsh

The Bai Ze ("white marsh") is a mythical beast from Chinese legends. It has a bovine appearance overall, with several eyes and horns, and intelligent enough to understand speech. As illustrated by Gusukuma Seihou in the 17th Century, it is white with a black horn on one side of its face. Absol is similar in appearance, being mainly white with black hilights which include the sickle-like horn on one side of its face. The Bai Ze is said to have predicted a plague; Absol is said to be able to predict disasters as well.

8. Chandelure is partially based on hitodama. What is hitodama?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 3

Answer: ghost fire

Hitodama are spectral balls of fire that tend to appear at night. They are supposed to be human souls separated from their bodies. Chandelure is a large, powerful chandelier that evolves from Lampent (a lamp), which evolves from Litwick (a candle). Chandelure is a ghost/fire type that has strong special attack power. It burns with a strong purple (or in rare cases, orange) flame and is said to burn the soul, rather than the body, of a foe. Either way, it's not a good thing.

9. What signature move of Meowth helps connect it to the luck-bringing Maneki-neko?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 2

Answer: Pay Day

The Maneki-neko is a good luck charm of a cat holding a gold coin and beckoning with a usually-motorized arm. Meowth is a small cat, similar to the maneki-neko, that stands on two feet. The Japanese also have a saying, "neko ni koban," which is similar in meaning to "pearls before swine." Meowth has a gold coin -- a koban from centuries past -- attached to its head. Meowth is also famous for being able to use the move Pay Day (Japanese, "Neko ni Koban") in battle. It does a little damage, and if the user wins the battle, picks up some extra money.

10. Kitsune are wise, long-lived foxes that possess supernatural powers. They can breathe fire, create illusions, and grow extra tails as they age. How many "tales" do the most powerful kitsune possess?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 1

Answer: Nine

Kitsune start with one tail, but grow more as they become older and more powerful. The oldest kitsune grow nine tails, at which point their fur turns white and they become all-seeing and all-knowing. Ninetales is a white fox-like Pokemon with (what else?) nine tails and white fur. It is a fire-type and primarily uses fire attacks. The illusory nature of a kitsune can be seen in the fact that Ninetales uses psychic and ghost attacks, which include confounding moves like Spite, Grudge, Confuse Ray, and Hypnosis.

11. Where can Ho-oh be found in the "Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen" Versions?

From Quiz Pokemon Legendaries in Versions

Answer: Navel Rock

Lugia and Ho-oh can be found in Navel Rock in "Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen". The Navel Rock is accessible only from an event. The Whirl Islands and Tin Tower don't exist in "Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen" and the Lost Cave does not have a legendary Pokemon in it. The event is gone now so the only way to get to the Navel Rock is by cheating.

12. While Moltres is found on Island One of the Sevii Islands in "Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green", where is Moltres found in the original "Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow"?

From Quiz Legendary Pokemon

Answer: Victory Road

Moltres can also be snagged from Master Greevil in "Pokemon XD:Gale of Darkness". Zapdos is still found at the Power Plant and Articuno is still found in the Seafoam Islands, both of which can also be snagged from Master Greevil in "Pokemon XD:Gale of Darkness".

13. The giant, lumbering Torterra has a lot in common with what mythological being that originated around India or China?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 4

Answer: world turtle

The world turtle is a divine being present in several world myths, and was advanced as an ancient explanation for what held the Earth up. The earliest of these myths is believed to be the Indian turtle Kurma, based on giant turtle fossils found there. Torterra appears as a large, slow, heavy turtle described as the Continent Pokemon. As might be expected from a world turtle, it is a grass/ground type. Torterra is green and brown, and so large that a tree grows on one side of its thick shell. It is sometimes mistaken for a moving forest.

14. Froslass is based on the Yuki-onna, which is why a Froslass is a ghost/ice type that is always what?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 3

Answer: female

Yuki-onna ("snow woman") is a fairly popular spirit in Japanese culture. Appearance wise, she is tall, thin, wears a kimono, and does not leave footprints behind when she walks. If a person got trapped in a snowstorm, she would be the reason they froze to death. Froslass is an ice/ghost type that appears to wear a kimono and has no footprint. She can have the ability Snow Cloak, which makes it much harder to hit her when hail is active on the battlefield. Froslass evolves from Snorunt (itself a small snow spirit), but only if it is female.

15. An old story about priests who asked women for bronze mirrors to melt is reflected in Bronzor which evolves into what?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 2

Answer: Bronzong

Does the bronze mirror and zhong (ceremonial bell) connection seem random? "Of a Mirror and a Bell" is a story of priests who gathered bronze mirrors to melt them and turn them into a bell, and one woman whose mirror would not melt. Bronzor and Bronzong are steel/psychic types, and their abilities allow them to either levitate (and avoid ground attacks) or be heatproof (and resist fire attacks). In Japanese, Bronzor and Bronzong are called Doumirror and Doutakun; similarly a bronze mirror is a Doukyou and a Doutaku is a large, ancient bell.

16. Mawile was based on a Futakuchi-onna, a woman with a very unusual feature. Both possess an extra of what extra body part, that also contributes to the name 'Mawile'?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 1

Answer: mouth

A Futakuchi-onna ("two-mouthed woman") is a woman with a second mouth on the back of her head, often the result of a curse or accident. Mawile has a large mouth -- a maw -- on the back of its head, that chomps down on things with great force. It often enters battle backwards or sideways, using its extra mouth to intimidate foes. Starting with the sixth generation, Mawile is able to mega-evolve into Mega Mawile, which has two mouths on the back of its head, and one of the highest attack stats possible out of all Pokemon.

17. In "Pokemon Platinum" you can use a special item to find Rotom's five different forms. What is that item called?

From Quiz Pokemon Legendaries in Versions

Answer: Secret Key

The Secret Key was used to find Rotom's five different forms. If you had downloaded the event (which is gone now) you could go to the Team Galactic Headquarters in Eterna City, use the Secret Key at the top left corner and find a secret room with Rotom's five forms in it.

18. Zekrom's signature move, Bolt Strike was the strongest Electric type move in the game, not counting Gem boosted Electric moves. What was its base power?

From Quiz Competitive Pokémon History - Zekrom

Answer: 130

Bolt Strike's awe-inspiring power meant dealing with Electric-weak threats was basically effortless for Zekrom. Even Lugia would be cleanly OHKOed from full health thanks to Zekrom's ability to bypass Multiscale.

19. A Nukekubi is a detached humanoid head that wanders around at night attacking people. What necklace-wearing ghost looks like it could do the same?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 4

Answer: Misdreavus

Nukekubi appear to be people by day, but by night, their heads detach from their bodies. They attack people and feed on blood, but must return to their bodies by dawn or die. Misdreavus is a ghost that is essentially a severed head with a neck. It tends to play mischievous (but not deadly) pranks on people, like screaming at people and yanking their hair without warning. Nukekubi cover up the red line around their necks with things like necklaces. Misdreavus appears to wear a necklace of red pearls around its neck.

20. Which flaming pokemon could claim to have been made in the image of simian legends Hanuman, Vanara, and Sun Wukong?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 3

Answer: Infernape

Infernape, Hanuman, Vanara, and Sun Wukong are all monkey people in one form or another. Hanuman is a Hindu monkey god and in fact just one of a race of monkey people known as Vanara. Sun Wukong is also known as the Monkey King and is the main character in the Chinese story "Journey To the West". Infernape is a fire/fighting Pokemon with its head on fire. All of them are built to emphasize strength, speed, and agility. Like a monkey, Infernape is relatively short; it is also said to be an expert in martial arts.

21. What signature ability do Zorua and Zoroark possess, that would be equally appropriate for a tricky Kitsune?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 2

Answer: Illusion

Zorua and its evolution Zoroark are dark, fox-like pokemon, and Zoroark was the first Pokemon from the fifth generation to be revealed to the public. Like Ninetales, they are based on the trickster fox known as a Kitsune, but in very different ways. Among their other abilities, Kitsune are able to create vivid illusions. Zorua and Zoroark have the ability Illusion, which allows them to take the form of another pokemon in their user's party to fool an opponent. Their illusion ability is also integrated into the story of Pokemon Black and White, where they appear to be humans until a special event is triggered.

22. One of the starter Pokemon of the Kalos region, Greninja is based on Jiraiya, a ninja with the ability to shapeshift into what?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 1

Answer: toad

"The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya" is a story written in the nineteenth century about Jiraiya, who (among other things) could transform into a toad. The association of ninja with toads made its way to Pokemon in the form of Greninja, an anthropomorphic toad with a ninja appearance. As might be expected of a ninja toad, Greninja is a water/dark type, and extremely fast. It is also capable of learning Mat Block and Water Shuriken, two moves modeled on ninja skills.

23. In "Pokemon Platinum" after you got Shaymin in your party, you could unlock a special item. That item could change Shaymin into its Sky Form. What is that item called?

From Quiz Pokemon Legendaries in Versions

Answer: Gracidea Flower

The Gracidea Flower could change Shaymin into its Sky Form only in "Pokemon Platinum". The Oak's Letter was used to capture Shaymin, not transform it. Remember that Shaymin will change back into its Land Form at night, when it's frozen in battle or when it is deposited into a PC. At Sky Form, Shaymin's attack, special attack and speed are higher, with the price of it's defenses being lower. Also remember that in the "Diamond/Pearl" versions, Shaymin does not have a Sky Form.

24. At the beginning of the game, who rescues the player character after he or she is transported to Hisui through the rift in spacetime?

From Quiz Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Answer: Professor Laventon

The game begins when the player hears the voice of the legendary Pokemon Arceus. He or she is then suddenly sent through a rift in the spacetime and transported to a beach in Hisui. Professor Laventon is the first person the player meets in Hisui. Laventon is a somewhat scatterbrained Pokemon professor working on a project to document all of Hisui's Pokemon. He brings the player into Jubilife Village and provides him or her with shelter and food.

25. People can be Pokemon too. What did comedian Sanpei Hayashiya often do that Wobbuffet is regularly illustrated as doing?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 3

Answer: hold his hand to his forehead

Sanpei Hayashiya was a Japanese rakugo comedian. It's a style of comedy that involves a single person sitting and explaining a complicated story. Sanpei Hayashiya was known for haplessly putting his hand to his head and explaining "Sou nansu, okusan!" ("That's the way it is, ma'am"!). Sounansu is the Japanese name for Wobbuffet, which is something of a punch line in many ways. It is shaped like a punching bag and holds its hand to its head. It cannot inflict damage except by countering damage that it takes. Despite this, it is extremely aggravating and difficult to beat, as an opponent cannot flee from it.

26. Tsuchinoko is a thick, slug-like snake cryptid. Nokocchi is the Japanese name for what uncommon Pokemon?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 2

Answer: Dunsparce

Nokocchi is an anagram of Tsuchinoko*. Tsuchinoko is a small but dangerous reptilian cryptid with a thick, slug-like body. Dunsparce has a thick, slug-like body with a large head and large eyes. It is also one of the few Pokemon that can use moves like Glare and Coil, which are generally usable only by Pokemon based on snakes. In the games, Dunsparce is relatively rare and difficult to find, much like the ever-elusive Tsuchinoko in real life. *However, "tsu" became a "small tsu", which doubles the letter following it, in this case "c". Thus when written in English, it does not appear to be an anagram.

27. Legend has it that carp which manage to leap up the Dragon Gate -- a waterfall on the Yellow River -- will turn into dragons. It's quite an accomplishment, and an explanation for what Pokemon evolution?

From Quiz Pokemon of Eastern Legends 1

Answer: Magikarp to Gyarados

Asian carp can leap great distances when startled. They gather around the Dragon Gate every spring, and legend has it that those that could make it up the waterfall would become dragons. Magikarp are notoriously weak, and often do little but splash around. But a Magikarp that perseveres and becomes strong enough evolves into Gyarados, a violent, brutal Pokemon with strong stats. Gyarados is a water/flying type and draconic in appearance, but it also bears similarities to koinobori, wind socks that are traditionally flown during Children's Day.

28. Moltres could be found at the Victory Road in "Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow". Where can you find Moltres in the "FireRed/LeafGreen" versions?

From Quiz Pokemon Legendaries in Versions

Answer: Mt. Ember

Moltres is located at Mt. Ember in "Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen", it can be found roaming the wild in "Pokemon Platinum" after you get the National Dex. Faraway Island is an event-only place where Mew could be found. Moltres is probably the last legendary bird you will find in "FireRed/LeafGreen" as the other two, Zapdos and Articuno can be found earlier in the game.

29. The sixth generation is where Zekrom's lacking Speed stat began to really hinder it. What was Zekrom's Speed stat?

From Quiz Competitive Pokémon History - Zekrom

Answer: 90

90 isn't absolutely horrid, but it misses on some backbreakingly crucial benchmarks that would've made Zekrom arguably a high or even top level threat. Speed tying with Primal Groudon and Kyogre creates dangerous situations in the form of Speed ties which, should Zekrom lose, will cause it to get obliterated before it can move or at least accomplish far less than it otherwise would've been able to. Being outsped by Xerneas and Yveltal creates a similar, unfortunate dilemma minus the Speed tying aspect. Moreover, Zekrom's Choice Scarf set has its viability hindered by the fact that, even with a Choice Scarf, it is still outsped by Deoxys-A and Mega Mewtwo-Y and OHKOed- this is not a problem Choice Scarf variants of Xerneas, Yveltal or Rayquaza have to deal with. As such, Zekrom would've really appreciated a little more in the Speed department- even ten points would've made a gargantuan difference.
