Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of animal is a roadrunner?

Answer: bird

The roadrunner is classified as a bird, specifically a cuckoo. Although it is a bird, it does not do much flying, preferring to stay on the ground. Roadrunners have four toes on each of their feet, two toes facing forwards and two toes facing backwards.
2. This animal is the largest land based arthropod in the world. Living in areas around the Indian and Pacific Ocean, it is also called the robber crab. What type of crab is being described?

Answer: giant coconut crab

The giant coconut crab is also known by some as the palm thief, because it has a habit of making off with anything it needs. Apparently it likes shiny items! Its common name comes from the ability to climb coconut palm trees, clip off the coconut, retrieve it once back on the ground, dropping it repeatedly or banging on it with its huge claw to get to the food inside.

In addition to the meat of the coconut, the giant coconut crab also enjoys fleshy fruits, nuts, and seeds.
3. What is the term used to refer to a baby reindeer?

Answer: calf

A baby reindeer is called a calf. Reindeer are found in the northern part of the world, most commonly in the Scandinavian region. Although both male and female reindeer have antlers, male antlers eventually fall off, usually in December. In North America, reindeer are referred to as caribou.
4. This animal is a type of lemur, found only on the island of Madagascar. It is the world's largest nocturnal primate, and likes to live in forests, where it digs insects or grubs from trees for its food. What is the name of this animal?

Answer: Aye-aye

The aye-aye taps on the tree, and then listens for insects. The aye-aye will open up the wood of the tree by chewing. It then digs the insect out of the tree with an especially elongated middle finger. It is estimated that the aye-aye will spend approximately 80% of the night looking for food, and travel as far as two and a half miles in the process.
5. Alligators are native to two countries. One is the United States; what is the other?

Answer: China

Alligators are native to the United States and to China. Within the United States, alligators are most commonly found in Florida, but they can also be found in a few other states including Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas.
In eastern China, people can find a species of alligator, appropriately called the Chinese alligator (scientific name: Alligator sinensis). Unlike the alligators found in the United States, the alligators found in China are armored. These alligators are an endangered species mainly due to habitat destruction due to its land being turned into farmland.
Unlike most other animals, there is no average lifespan for an alligator.
6. One of the oldest living animals, with a life span up to 145 years, is the geoduck. What type of animal is it?

Answer: clam

The geoduck is a very large clam; its shell can reach 15 to 20 centimeters in diameter, and it has a very long neck or siphon that can reach three and a half feet in length. Commercially harvested and considered a delicacy in Asia, it is native to the northwestern coast of the US and southwestern coast of Canada.
7. What sort of creature has a name that includes the description, "star nosed"? The only member of the genus Condylura, it has eleven pairs of appendages that hang down from its nose.

Answer: mole

Because the star nosed mole has extremely limited vision, it can use its appendages to touch objects. Altogether the appendages contain about 25,000 sensory receptors. It makes its home in the northeastern United States, ranging from New Hampshire to Wisconsin, and southeastern Canada.
8. One reason a spider is mistaken for an insect is because spiders are small multi-legged creatures.

Answer: True

Contrary to somewhat popular belief, spiders are arachnids not insects. One reason for this confusion is because spiders, like insects, are small creatures with multiple legs and three body sections (head, thorax, and abdomen). However, there is more to an insect than that, such as a compound eye and an exoskeleton.

Arachnids such as spiders have eight legs. The front two legs have been converted to a sensory function, which does lead to the misconceptions that spiders have six legs.
9. Which frog, a member of the family Centrolenidae, has an abdomen that is completely transparent?

Answer: glass frog

Although green in color, the internal organs and gastrointestinal tract are visible through the skin on the abdominal side. There are over fifty species of the glass frog, found mostly along rivers and streams in Central and South America.
10. Is a turtle an example of an amniote?

Answer: Yes

An amniote is an animal with the ability to lay eggs on land instead of water. Reptiles, birds, and mammals are examples of amniotes. (The duck-billed platypus is an example of mammals-called monotremes-that lay eggs.)
A turtle is an example of a reptile which lays eggs. In fact, it is one of the oldest groups of reptiles. As such, it is classified as an amniote.
