Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what state/country was the Siberian Husky first developed?

Answer: Russia

The Siberian Husky originated in Russia and was bred by the Chukchi people in ancient times. When Russia fell to Communist powers any signs of wealth were not permitted by the Communist govenment. This included the Siberian Husky. Most of the Siberians not taken from the Chukchi people were exported to Alaska, leading to the popular misconception that the Husky was native to Alaska, which is entirely false. To this day there are no pure bred Huskies in their native homeland of Russia.
2. The Ibizan Hound, native of the Balearic Islands, is considered to be in what family of dogs?

Answer: Sighthound

The Ibizan Hound is a sighthound, meaning they use their sight, and not their scent, to hunt small game animals such as rabbits.
3. The Australian Shepherd originated in Australia.

Answer: False

The Australian Shepherd was actually developed in the United States, not Australia. Most historians believe that the foundation for this breed came from Basque sheepherders.
4. The Japanese Akita's original function was to participate in dog fights and in large game hunting. What is the Akita's current function in Japan?

Answer: Guard dog

Akitas originally were used as dogs for the fighting ring or for big game hunting, however neither of these two "occupations" are practiced today. In Japan these dogs are now used as guard dogs and occasionally as police dogs.
5. This breed of dog was originally bred in France for the purpose of pointing and retrieving. This breed is also famous for its unique coat texture. What dog breed is this?

Answer: Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was bred in France for the purpose of pointing and retrieving. Today it is still used for these functions.
6. The Pharaoh Hound is known for bearing an uncanny resemblance to what ancient Egyptian god?

Answer: Anubis

The Pharaoh hound is said to have an uncanny resemblance to the jackal-headed god Anubis, who is the god of embalming and death.
7. This dog was given the nickname of "Gamekeeper's Night Dog" and was bred in England for the purpose of estate guardian in the 1800's. The most common colour is brindle, although other colours do occur. What dog breed is this?

Answer: Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff was used as a guard dog in its early years. However today it is used strictly for companionship in England.
8. This dog was considered only for the Russian aristocracy and other royalty in the Middle Ages and was used for wolf hunting, sometimes in packs of more than one hundred. This breed was also called the Russian Wolfhound. What was the other name for the Russian Wolfhound?

Answer: Borzoi

The Borzoi is the other name for the Russian Wolfhound. After the Russian Revolution the days of extreme weath were over as Communism set in. Unlike its counterpart the Siberian Husky, which was exported to other lands, the Borzoi were slaughtered. The fate of the breed was left in the hands of foreign royalty in other countries. Borzoi were eventually brought to America and gained a reputation as the ultimate glamour dog, often seen at the sides of movie stars.
9. The Anatolian Shepherd originated in what country?

Answer: Turkey

The Anatolian Shepherd originated in Turkey during ancient times where it was used to guard the shepherd's flocks. The Anatolian was accepted into the American Kennel Club in 1996.
10. The Kerry Blue Terrier was bred in Ireland for the purpose of ratting, as well as badger and fox hunting. For what reason was this dog called the Kerry Blue Terrier?

Answer: As the dog gets older its coat turns blue

The Kerry Blue Terrier is actually born black but changes colour anywhere from nine months to two years until it develops a blue colouration, hence the name, Kerry Blue Terrier.
