Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do the small treefrogs in the rainforest ascend trees?

Answer: Sticky toes help them climb.

Small treefrogs live in the rainforest and have sticky toes that help them climb. Those sticky toe pads are self-cleaning too; the pads have hexagonal patterns so some parts of the pads make contact with the tree surface and create friction, while the slots spread the mucus (the sticky stuff) throughout the pad.

2. The prairie wolf or the American jackal are alternate names for which animal of Central and North America, whose Latin name is Canis latrans?

Answer: Coyote

Coyotes can be found as far south as Panama and as far north as Alaska. Their Latin name of Canis latrans literally means barking dog. Coyotes have become largely nocturnal animals, owing to their trepidation where humans are concerned. They tend to move around in small kindred packs but generally hunt in pairs.

It is rare, though not unheard of, for a coyote to attack a human. They are, however, a major threat to livestock and domestic pets.

3. On average what bodily process takes 31 days for a rabbit, 64 days for a cat, 280 days for a human, and 645 days for an African elephant?

Answer: Gestation

In general, smaller mammals have a shorter gestation than larger mammals but the length is also impacted by breeding season and environmental variables. Other gestation lengths include 122 days for a beaver, 365 days for a donkey, and 13 for the opossum.

4. Which of the following birds actually existed in real life?

Answer: Dodo

The dodo was a large flightless bird of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, which stood about 1 metre (3.3 feet) high and weighed around 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Human impact, including hunting, introduction of predatory animals, and the clearing of habitat, rendered the dodo extinct before the year 1700.

The bird would later become a symbol of extinction, and the phrase "dead as a dodo" is often used in reference to something considered indisputably dead. The other birds mentioned here are creatures belonging to various mythologies.

5. The whooping crane is the tallest US bird. Which of the following is a candidate for being the second tallest?

Answer: Great Blue Heron

The great blue heron stands, on average, at about 47 inches tall, while the whooping crane is about five inches taller. Great egrets top out at about 39 inches. The other two "greats" listed are smaller, perching birds. Most great blues are a slaty gray-blue color with an orange bill, but some are "great white herons." These are leucistic, not albino - the feathers are white, but the eyes and legs are normally pigmented. Great blue herons eat a wide variety of prey - mostly fish, but also the occasional frog or mammal.

6. What insect is also known as the devil's darning needle?

7. Where is the native habitat of the chinchillas?

Answer: South America

Wild chinchillas live in furrows and crevices in the Andes mountains. They are bred for their soft fur which can be of different colors and is very expensive. They are also kept as pets. Because their hearing range is very similar to that of humans, chinchillas are also used for auditory research.

8. What are baby donkeys or baby mules known as?

Answer: Foals

A donkey's offspring, who is less than a year old, is generally called a foal. Specifically, a male offspring is called a colt, and a female one is called filly.

9. If I were to say to you my pet rabbit Nibbler is crepuscular, what characteristics does he have?

Answer: He is most active at dawn and dusk

Crepuscular comes from the Latin word "crepusculum," meaning "twilight". Many domestic animals are actually crepuscular in their wild state; e.g. rabbits, guinea pigs, cats. Also some wild animals that are commonly labeled nocturnal are strictly speaking crepuscular - most active in twilight.

10. African giant pouched rats have been used in Africa to provide which valuable service and save human lives?

Answer: They locate buried land mines

Gambian pouched rats are highly intelligent, food motivated, animals with poor eyesight, but a very good sense of smell. They can detect TNT from a metre away and from underground. It is more economical to use the rats, rather than dogs, as it costs about $7,300 to train a rat, but about $25,000 for a dog. Up to 2017, these rats have located over 13,000 land mines. Imagine how many injuries they have prevented, and lives they have saved.
