Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The adorable puppy in this photo is a Doberman pinscher. Why are you unlikely to see it being used as a police dog in Montana?

Answer: Dobermans are intolerant of cold weather.

The Doberman is smart, brave, easy to train, and has often gotten a reputation as an aggressive breed. These loyal dogs are very protective and fearless but if socialized and trained correctly this breed can make a wonderful family pet. This is not the breed for everyone, as the owner must establish that he is the master and pack leader. You probably will not see many in places with lots of cold weather as the Doberman is very cold sensitive.
2. What were basset hounds originally bred to do?

Answer: Hunt rabbits

The basset hound is an adorable scent hound which was originally bred to hunt rabbits. The basset has short legs, long ears and heavy bones. It is usually tricolored, playful as a puppy, and very affectionate. Care must be given when owning a basset as they will become lazy couch potatoes if they are not taken out for exercise daily.
3. Why do the Saint Bernards of today look quite a bit different from the Saint Bernard of the 18th century?

Answer: They have been crossed with the Newfoundland.

One of the largest of the domestic dog breeds, the Saint Bernard is also one of the gentlest. They have been used for search and rescue in Alpine regions for centuries. The Saint Bernard of today is much larger than the original members of the breed which were closer to the size of a modern German shepherd. During the early years of the 19th century, many of these dogs died during especially harsh winters in which many dogs lost their lives in avalanches.

They were then bred with the Newfoundland which was comparable in size but had longer fur.

This and selective breeding for larger dogs has led to the modern version which can weigh as much as 300 lbs (140 kg).
4. Which one of the statements about these adorable shar pei puppies is true?

Answer: They are a Chinese breed with a black tongue.

The unusual shar pei is a wonderful indoor dog that is fairly easy to groom. They are very loyal to their owners and very affectionate, but with strangers they tend to be rather snobby and disinterested. The folds of loose skin that form the adorable wrinkles on these dogs are very abundant in puppies, by as they grow they tend to fill in their skin.

As adults the wrinkles are usually limited to the withers, neck, and head regions. The shar pei is believed to have originated in China and is the only other breed other than the Chow Chow to display a black tongue.
5. Which of the following bad traits is often found in a poorly trained Weimaraner?

Answer: Excessive barking

The Weimaraner is loyal, protective, and fearless, making him a wonderful guard and watchdog. The Weimaraner needs a strong owner who is able to teach the dog what is expected and for how long. If this is not provided by the owner the dog may become stressed out.

This can lead to excessive barking and destructive behavior. Consistency is the key with this breed. They are a healthy breed with an excellent sense of smell. They can be used to hunt almost any prey animal and need to be exercised daily if they do not have a job to do.
6. These sweet faces with coats of solid white fur, belong to a litter of baby Dalmatians.

Answer: True

Bred as a carriage dog, the Dalmatian is well known for the unusual black or liver colored spots that develop as the puppy ages. Dalmatian puppies are born with white coats but many have their spots on their skin hidden under the white fur. The color starts to spread into the fur when the puppies are about two weeks old.

This continues until the puppy is about 7 months old at which time their coloring is usually complete.
7. Which one of the following breeds would be considered brachycephalic?

Answer: Boston terrier

The Boston terrier is often called a tuxedo dog because of its black and white coloring. These are lively dogs with a friendly and happy disposition. One of their faults is that they are so friendly that they will leave with anyone and forget about them chasing away burglars.

Their expressive eyes give away their intelligence and ability to learn quickly. This is a dog that needs a lot of attention, so if you are away from home a lot, this is not the breed for you. They are brachycephalic which means they have a short nose which leads to snoring, snorting, and other breathing issues.
8. This winsome face belongs to a great Dane puppy whose ancestors were originally bred for which of these jobs?

Answer: Boar hunting

This cute little face will grow into a gentle giant that can weigh up to 180 lbs. (81kg). His ancestors were bred as hunting dogs used mainly in boar hunting. Despite its name, this breed is thought to have originated in Germany, possibly the result of crossbreeding the Irish wolfhound and the English mastiff.

The great Dane comes in many colors, is wonderful with children, and makes a great family dog. Because of its protective nature and size, it makes a wonderful watch dog.
9. This lovely mother and her babies are wonderful examples of which of the following breeds, the smallest of the retriever breeds?

Answer: Nova Scotia ducktolling retriever

Retrievers in general are some of the most popular dog breeds around the world. The smallest retriever is the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, which was bred to lure in and retrieve water fowl. Like all retrievers, this breed is intelligent, affectionate, and outgoing.

The toller loves to work and is known for wagging his tail with contentment the whole time he is performing his job. The toller has a strong desire to please is owner and is very trainable. This breed comes in a variety of shades of red with white markings.
10. For which of the following jobs was the giant Newfoundland bred to do?

Answer: Water rescue

The Newfoundland is known for its abilities as an outstanding water rescue dog. Their webbed paws make them one of the best swimmers of the canine family. They are very strong and heavily bones, with a water resistant double coat. Their sweet temperament and tendency to become a couch potato belies their courage when saving victims of shipwreck or willingness to work on fishing boats.

This is a breed that needs a strong, firm owner with the skills to train the dog to obey commands.
