Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first headstone you see at the Burlington, Vermont Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavor Graveyard makes you laugh despite the solemnity of the setting. This troupe of six men was a holy grail of comedy. What deceased flavor honored these comedians?

Answer: Vermonty Python

Monty Python was a seminal troupe of actors/comedians that delighted lovers of witty, if often silly, humor. They formed in the 1960s. The Python troupe consisted of John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. The group's debut movie was "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975). Spam was originally lampooned by the Pythons in a television sketch about a restaurant that served every dish using the canned meat product. Fondness for both the sketch and the "Holy Grail" movie combined to create the basis for the successful theatrical musical "Spamalot".

Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream, Inc. is the Vermont-based brainchild of Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Cohen and Greenfield opened their first shop in 1978 with no previous experience. The high-quality ice cream and counter-culture philanthropy of the owners made the brand an instant success. The introduction of "Cherry Garcia" (named for Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead) in 1987, established a pattern of creating irreverent pun-filled flavor names as homages to pop culture icons. In this tradition, when a flavor is "killed" (discontinued) it is memorialized in the company's "Flavor Graveyard".

Vermonty Python was first introduced in 2006 and "buried" in the Flavor Graveyard when the flavor discontinued in 2008. Vermonty Python consisted of coffee liqueur ice cream with chocolate cookie crumbs and cow shaped pieces of fudge.
2. Actress Maureen McCormick starred as the oldest daughter of a blended family in the popular 1970s US television program "The Brady Bunch". What discontinued Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor was a tribute to Ms. McCormick's character?

Answer: Marsha Marsha Marshmallow

Maureen McCormick starred as "good girl" Marcia Brady in the 1969-1974 American television program "The Brady Bunch". McCormick continued to play Marcia Brady in a series of spin-offs and television movies during the 1980s and 1990s. Marcia was the oldest of the three girls who joined their mother in a blended family with Mike Brady, a widower with three age-matching sons. Since appearing in the show, Ms. McCormick has struggled to distinguish herself from the iconic character. She revealed in her 2008 autobiography a long struggle to recover from cocaine and prescription drug addiction.

Ben and Jerry's limited edition flavor Marsha Marsha Marshmallow played off a continuing theme of "The Brady Bunch". Middle daughter Jan Brady, played by Eve Plumb, often whined "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" whenever comparisons to her perfect older sister became too much. The ice cream combined a chocolate base with fudge chunks, toasted marshmallow and graham cracker bits. It was sold from 2005-2007.
3. Say Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road to this limited edition ice cream flavor, sold for one week in July 2008, to celebrate the first concert performance by what iconic British pop music star?

Answer: Elton John

Reginald Dwight (aka Elton John) has sold over 300 million record albums in his remarkable career. Beginning in 1970 with the chart favorite "Your Song", Elton John remained a fixture atop the pop charts. John's first US Billboard number one album was 1972's "Honky Chateau". This album included the enduring "Rocket Man" single. Many people, including me, celebrate the 1973 album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" with iconic songs including the title song, Bennie and the Jets, Candle in the Wind, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, as his best.

Elton John performed a sold out show at the Burlington Vermont Champlain Valley Expo on July 21, 2008. The performance was the first ever by John in the state of Vermont and the last of the 50 states to see him live. To celebrate the occasion, Ben & Jerry's distributed a limited-batch ice cream described as an "outrageous symphony of decadent chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cookie dough, butter brickle and white chocolate chunks". Fittingly, the treat was named "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road". The company sold the flavor locally in Vermont for a single week and contributed all of the proceeds to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
4. What would you say to a scoop of "Magic Brownie" ice cream that was sold from 2005-2007? What South African-born musician, whose albums include "Crash" and "Everyday", was this crushingly good flavor created to honor?

Answer: Dave Matthews

"Ants Marching" and "What Would You Say" are hit songs from the Dave Matthews Band. Dave Matthews was born in South Africa; he moved to the United States at the age of two, before returning to South Africa at the age of ten. The Dave Matthews Band formed in 1990 and was an instant success, accumulating seven number one albums on the US Billboard Album Chart from 1990-2003. Matthews, who later moved to the US, has been active in environmental and political causes.

The Dave Matthews Band Magic Brownies ice cream was sold by Ben & Jerry's from 2005-2007. Vanilla ice cream was swirled with raspberry and brownies to form the sweet treat. The limited edition flavor marked the second collaboration between the company and the band. An earlier offering called One Sweet Whirled was sold from 2002-2005.
5. Great movies don't always make for a great tribute ice cream. Ben & Jerry's Pulp Addiction paid a short-lived tribute to this writer/director/actor's violent intersecting crime drama "Pulp Fiction".

Answer: Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino is the ultimate movie geek turned movie auteur. Tarantino worked at a video rental store before writing and directing the low-budget but critically acclaimed heist film "Reservoir Dogs" (1992). The success of "Reservoir Dogs" led to 1994's "Pulp Fiction", a character-driven crime drama that earned Tarantino his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. While director Quentin did not serve time in California's San Quentin prison (shown in picture), many of his films' characters might have been guests at the "Q".

Pulp Addiction was introduced as part of Ben & Jerry's 2000 effort to create "twisted" flavors combining ice creams. Pulp Addiction combined a creamy orange ice cream and a chocolate orange ice cream with orange liqueur. The delightful mishmash mirrored the craziness of Tarantino's movie. The flavor was discontinued mysteriously in 2006. Pulp Addiction was one of the few flavors of Ben & Jerry's that was not certified Kosher.
6. There is no headstone for Doonesberry Sorbet, because this early tribute flavor was placed in an ice cream protection program and renamed Berry Berry Extraordinary. What famous cartoonist created the "Doonesbury" comic strip and earned this frozen tribute?

Answer: Garry Trudeau

Gary Trudeau first created the characters for the US comic strip "Doonesbury" in 1968 while attending Yale University. Trudeau's first professional strips appeared in newspapers on October 26, 1970. The imaginative characters and counter-culture themes made the strip immensely popular and vaulted cartoonist Trudeau to a pop culture status that rivaled "Peanuts" creator Charles Schultz. Trudeau became the first cartoonist to win a Pulitzer Prize in 1975. Trudeau married broadcaster Jane Pauley in 1980. In case you were wondering, Montreal's airport is named for former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

In 1996, Ben & Jerry's and Trudeau combined to create Donnesberry Sorbet. The treat was a combination of raspberry and blueberry sorbets. Unique to the flavor, the ice cream cartons replaced the usual picture of Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield with those of Mike Doonesbury and Zonker Harris, characters from the comic strip. Sadly, the flavor was renamed Berry Berry Extraordinary and Doonesberry Sorbet simply vanished.
7. The headstone says Wavy Gravy. This groovy psychedelic ice cream was created to honor the artist and community activist with the birth name of Hugh Nanton Romney. For what legendary 1969 music festival did Wavy Gravy act as the Master of Ceremonies?

Answer: Woodstock

Musician, artist and political activist Hugh Romney (aka Wavy Gravy) is best known for his outlandish colorful "hippie" clothing and participating as the Master of Ceremonies and de facto ombudsman at the legendary 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Wavy Gravy is a co-founder of the SEVA Foundation, which is dedicated to the prevention and cure of eye diseases throughout the world. Romney changed his name to Wavy Gravy after being given the moniker by B.B. King at the 1969 Texas International Music Festival.

Ben & Jerry's introduced the ice cream flavor named for Mr. Gravy in 1993. The ice cream was buried in 2001, but resurrected briefly in 2003-2005. The treat was caramel Brazil nut ice cream with a chocolate hazelnut fudge swirl and roasted almonds. Royalties paid to Wavy Gravy funded Camp Winnarainbow, a summer camp for homeless and underprivileged children in the San Francisco Bay Area.
8. Sometimes the headstones in the flavor graveyard reflect the passing of the inspiration and not the ice cream. What legendary British musician is celebrated in spirit when eating the tasty "Imagine Whirled Peace"?

Answer: John Lennon

John Lennon's post-Beatles 1971 song "Imagine" was the highest charting of Lennon's solo career. The song reached number three on the US Billboard and number one in Canada. Lennon's impassioned plea for world peace dominates the song's stirring lyrics. Lennon tragically died from violence at the hands of Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980. The photo is of the Lennon Wall in Prague Czech republic. The wall is filled and refilled with graffiti tributes to Lennon and his songs, testifying to his enduring influence.

Imagine Whirled Peace was first introduced in 2008. The popular flavor is a caramel and sweet cream ice creams mixed with specially-manufactured fudge peace signs and toffee cookie pieces.
9. Dubbed "the flavor you can't refuse", Ben & Jerry's nonetheless sent The Gobfather to sleep with the fishes after its short sales run from 2005-2007. Who starred in and won the Academy Award for Best Actor in the 1972 film that was the inspiration for this no longer "made" flavor?

Answer: Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando starred as Don Vito Corleone, the patriarch of the mafia crime family at the center of 1973's Academy Award Best Picture "The Godfather". Brando won the Oscar for Best Actor, while Pacino, Caan and Duvall were all nominated but did not win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Brando had previously won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of ex-boxer Terry Malloy in 1954's "On the Waterfront". Brando was nominated for a total of eight acting Oscars before passing away in 2004.

Ben & Jerry's introduced The Gobfather ice cream with the subtitle "The Flavor You Can't Refuse", playing on a famous line Brando said in "The Godfather". Unfortunately, the Gobfather flavor, a mix of chocolate ice cream, fudge covered almonds and nougat, could be refused and was discontinued after a two year run.
10. Our final flavor, sold in limited edition, gave up the ghost and was discontinued. What multi-talented actress, talk show host, comedian and activist with the birth name of Caryn Johnson might have been honored with this ice cream tribute?

Answer: Makin Whoopie Pie

Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson in New York City. Goldberg came to the public's attention as a comedian starring in an immensely popular one-woman Broadway show. Goldberg quickly moved into both dramatic and comedic roles in major films, beginning with a starring role in 1985's "The Color Purple". Goldberg won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film "Ghost". Goldberg is a member of the select group of artists who have earned an "EGOT": winning an Emmy (US television), Grammy (US recording), Oscar (US motion picture) and Tony (US theater).

Before talking about the poor unfortunate ice cream flavor, Makin Whoopie Pie, we have to start with a confession. Sold only between 2002-2004, the flavor was a mix of chocolate ice cream, marshmallow and devil's food cake, but it was not named for the actress. Rather, the named referred to the classic American sweet treat the "Whoopie Pie". However, I won't tell Ms. Goldberg if you don't.
