Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This comic employed the banjo in his standup routine. He has since starred in several movies and has won a Grammy for his album of original songs for the banjo. Who is he?

Answer: Steve Martin

Steve Martin was a writer for the original "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". He has never lost his love of the banjo and has held his own with some of the masters of that instrument, including the late Earl Scruggs.
2. What stand-up comedienne had the title role in a TV series called "Grace Under Fire"?

Answer: Brett Butler

Alabama-born Brett's first television job was as a writer for Dolly Parton's variety series which was canceled after the first season. One of Brett's co-stars in "Grace Under Fire" was "Second City TV" alum Dave Thomas. The show ran from September 1993 to February 1998. Since then she has gone back to doing stand-up comedy in clubs with an occasional appearance on late night television.
3. Jackie Vernon was noted for the deadpan delivery in his routine, but he was also the voice of the title character in this animated holiday classic. The show has aired annually for several years. What is it?

Answer: Frosty the Snowman

This animated version of the popular holiday song has Frosty dancing and playing with the children. The narrator, Jimmy Durante, was a legend in his own right. He also performs the title song.
4. The TV show "Last Comic Standing" has undergone some format changes since its first season, but who was the winner of season one?

Answer: Dat Phan

Vietnamese-born Dat Phan grew up in the US. Following his win, Phan appeared in several movies and television shows, while continuing to perform his stand-up act in clubs around the world.
5. Jerry Seinfeld incorporated his stand-up act into his hit TV show "Seinfeld". How did he describe the show?

Answer: "It's a show about nothing".

When asked in an interview what the show was about, Jerry responded, "It's a show about nothing". He would repeat that phrase again and again in interviews. Like so many other standup comedians, Jerry's first big break came with an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson", followed by many more.
6. What violin-playing comedian was known as King of the One Liners?

Answer: Henny Youngman

Henny Youngman was born in Liverpool, England but moved with his family to the USA at a very young age. Jack Benny, of course, played the violin but he was more of a monologue and sketch comic. Henny's routine consisted of a string of unrelated one line jokes, hence the nickname.
7. Flip Wilson had a female alter-ego whose catch phrase was "The devil made me do it"! What was her name?

Answer: Geraldine

Flip Wilson's real name was Clerow Wilson, Jr. He was one of ten children. He was given the nickname "Flip" in the Air Force because his buddies said he was "flipped out". While working as a bellhop in the San Francisco Plaza Hotel, he began honing his act in the hotel's nightclub. Geraldine evolved from a character on one of Flip's comedy albums: Queen Isabel Johnson whose voice was also provided by Flip. Geraldine Johnson was merely Flip in drag--a brazen woman who was constantly referring to her boyfriend "Killer".
8. Who won a Grammy award for his live comedy album "Reality...What A Concept"?

Answer: Robin Williams

The late Robin Williams was an avid video game player. A petition signed by 11,000 fans advocated that he become a character in "World of Warcraft".
9. This comic went back to doing stand-up after his TV series "Good Times" left the air. His character on the series was JJ. What is his real name?

Answer: Jimmie Walker

"Good Times" had a successful run of five seasons and has remained a popular show in reruns, due in a large part to Jimmie Walker's portrayal of James Evans, Jr. (aka JJ). Jimmie Walker was a popular guest on game shows like "The Match Game" in the 1970s.
10. Dustin Hoffman portrayed this controversial comedian in a biopic. Who was he?

Answer: Lenny Bruce

The film "Lenny" was directed by Bob Fosse and was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture. Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Lenny Bruce earned him a nomination for Best Actor. While it didn't win any Oscars, it received great critical acclaim. Lenny Bruce's political satire and open use of obscenities was years ahead of its time.

In fact, he was charged and put on trial for using obscenities in his act. He was convicted by a panel of three judges and sentenced to four months in a workhouse.

He died of a drug overdose before his appeal was decided.
