Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What married couple from Hollywood's silent era, individually known as America's Sweetheart and The King of Hollywood, co-founded the United Artists motion picture studio?

Answer: Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks Sr.

Mary Pickford was born in Canada as Gladys Marie Smith in 1892 and was one of the pioneering actresses in early Hollywood. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. was born in Colorado as Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman in 1883 and was best known for his swashbuckling roles in "Robin Hood" (1922) and "The Thief of Bagdad" (1924).

They got married in 1920 and remained married for 16 years. They were both founding members of the Motion Picture Academy and, along with Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith in 1919, founded United Artists as an independent film studio.

In recent years, Tom Cruise, Paula Wagner and MGM resurrected United Artists in 2005 and then in 2011, MGM gained 100% control of UA.

7. Before he became a movie star he had a small role on TV on "Hill Street Blues" as a rookie cop with a stutter. Who is this man, who used a rock hammer to escape from Shawshank prison?

Answer: Tim Robbins

Tim Robbins's first television work was as a domestic terrorist in three episodes of the first season of "St. Elsewhere". On "Hill Street Blues", his career as a police officer did not last long. His character committed suicide shortly after graduating from the police academy. In the 1988 film "Bull Durham", Tim had his breakthrough role portraying pitcher Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh. Tim was the innocent but convicted of double murder Andy Dufresne in 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption". Andy escaped by spending almost two decades chipping away at the wall of his cell with a rock hammer and then crawling through the sewage pipes to freedom.

9. Who wrote the 2020 semi-autobiographical novel "Memoirs and Misinformation", the audiobook of which was narrated by former co-star Jeff Daniels?

Answer: Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey's first novel (co-written by Dana Vachon), "Memoirs and Misinformation" was released in 2020 to critical praise due to its unique take on the autobiography. Simply put, the vast majority of the book was wildly untrue, but written in a way that seemed like it could peek at an absurdly possible slice of Carrey's life and career in Hollywood.

Interestingly, the audiobook for the novel was narrated by Jeff Daniels, who co-starred with Carrey in the 1994 film "Dumb and Dumber". The book itself also features Nicolas Cage within its narrative.
