She started her career in journalism, working for various news agencies, eventually landing the position of assistant editor for the "Daily Mirror". In 1982 she started work for the BBC and hosted various shows, most famously consumer show "Watchdog".

In 2000 Robinson hosted the first edition of the UK quiz show "The Weakest Link" which started out with a group of contestants answering questions about general knowledge, trying to bank money. After each round the contestants voted for who has been the weakest link that round. That person was forced to leave, having to do the "Walk of Shame". The contestant were treated to Robinson's various sarcastic comments, traditionally sending each contestant off with her trademark exit line: "You're the weakest link, goodbye!".
