Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which American member of 'The 27 Club' died at the Samarkand Hotel, London in September 1970?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix was an American rock guitarist and singer and is considered by some to be one of the best guitarists of all time. Some of his most famous songs include 'All Along the Watch Tower' and 'Purple Haze'. The 27 Club is a listing primarily of musicians who died at the age of 27. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrisson and Amy Winehouse were all 27 when they died. Joplin also died in 1970 in a hotel room but it was the Landmark Motor Hotel, Hollywood, California. Jim Morrison died a year later in 1971 in Paris, France. And Amy Winehouse, a 'Brit', died at home in Camden, London in 2011.
2. Nancy Spungen was allegedly murdered by her more famous boyfriend, Sid, at New York's Chelsea Hotel. Which band was Sid a member of?

Answer: Sex Pistols

Sid Vicious was the bass player for the Sex Pistols. Nancy was a bit of a groupie and had followed the Ramones, The New York Dolls and Aerosmith. She had met Sid in London but they were living in New York's Chelsea Hotel at the time of her death on 12 October 1978.

She died of a single knife wound to the abdomen; she was only 20 years old. Sid Vicious was arrested and charged with second degree murder but died of a drug overdose before the case was brought to trial.
3. Virginia Rappe, a small time silent movie actress, died of peritonitis from a ruptured bladder in 1921, injuries she incurred whilst at the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Which silent era movie star was charged with her manslaughter?

Answer: Fatty Arbuckle

Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle had checked into the St Francis with two male friends and they had invited several women to join them, including Viriginia Rappe. Rappe was found seriously ill in one of the rooms that they had rented and on being taken to hospital a friend of Rappe's told a doctor that Arbuckle had raped Virginia. Police concluded that Arbuckle's obese body was the cause of the ruptured bladder. Arbuckle faced three trials; in the first two trials the jury couldn't reach a verdict. In the third trial the jury took only six minutes to acquit Arbuckle but his career never really recovered from the scandal.
4. Michael Hutchence, lead singer of the Australian band INXS, was found dead in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton, Double Bay in November 1997. In which city did he die?

Answer: Sydney

INXS were in Sydney as the culmination of their world tour which had commenced in April of that year. Hutchence was anticipating being joined by his partner, Paula Yates, and their daughter and her other three children. Yates, however, was unable to join him as planned.

Whilst there were suggestions that his death was as a result of erotic asphyxiation gone wrong, the coronial inquest ruled the death a suicide due to depression exacerbated by drugs and alcohol.
5. Oscar Wilde's last address was at the then not very upmarket Hotel d'Alsace in Paris. What was listed as the cause of Wilde's death?

Answer: Meningitis

Wilde died on 30 November 1900, a little too early for the cause of death to be Spanish Influenza; a pandemic which occurred towards the end of the First World War. There were a number of different factors that were thought to have been the cause of the meningitis, including a surgical intervention, and an ear injury that was incurred whilst in prison. I do not believe that Wilde would ever have suffered from quote exhaustion and indeed one of his last quotes was 'Alas I am dying beyond my means' as he sipped champagne on his deathbed.
6. John Belushi of 'Blues Brothers' and 'National Lampoon's Animal House' fame died on 5 March 1982. In which Californian hotel did he die?

Answer: Chateau Marmont

John Belushi's body was found in Bungalow 3, Chateau Marmont by his personal trainer, Bill Wallace. He died of a drug overdose from a combination of heroin and cocaine known as a 'speedball'. Whilst he was born in Chicago and died in Los Angeles, Belushi is buried in Abel's Hill Cemetery in Massachusetts.
7. Alice Monaghan, a maid at the New Yorker Hotel, found the body of which famous scientist in room 3327 in 1943?

Answer: Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla was born in what is now Croatia in 1856 and emigrated to the USA in 1884. He was an inventor and electrical engineer who played a significant role in the development of the alternating current (AC) electrical supply system. His output as an inventor was prodigious with almost 300 patents to his name. Tesla had moved into the New Yorker Hotel in 1934 and died there at the age of 86 on 7 January 1943. Mary Monaghan ignored the do not disturb sign on his door to find Tesla dead. Thomas Edison predeceased Tesla, dying in 1931 at his home in New Jersey. Dr Henry Jekyll and Victor Frankestein, whilst famous scientists, gained their fame as characters in works of fiction.
8. Drag Queen 'Divine' died in his sleep of an enlarged heart at the Regency Plaza Suites Hotel in Los Angeles on 7 March 1988. Which movie, which had only been released three weeks earlier, had he starred in with Rikki Lake?

Answer: Hairspray

Whilst all of these movies were released in 1988, only 'Hairspray' featured Rikki Lake who played the role of Tracy Trumblad; Divine played Tracy Trumblad's mother. The cast of this movie also featured Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono and Jerry Stiller. John Travolta recently reprised Devine's role in the 2007 remake of 'Hairspray'.
9. Anna Nicole Smith died of a prescription drug overdose in 2007 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Whilst more famous for her marriage to an ageing billionaire she had also pursued a career in acting and modelling. Which of these movies did she NOT appear in?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Despite wanting to be taken seriously as an actress Anna Nicole Smith's acting career never really took off. She appeared in 'The Hudsucker Proxy' and played Za Za who got to flirt with Tim Robbins. In 'The Naked Gun 33/12: The Final Insult' she played Tanya Peters, the girlfriend of the movie's villain, and in 'To the Limit' she played Colette Dubois who was seeking revenge for the murder of her husband. Smith is probably most famous for having married petroleum billionaire J Howard Marshall when he was 89 and she was just 26. Marshall died just one year after they married but he did not name Smith in his will.

She claimed that he had promised her one half of his estate, at that time estimated to be worth $1.6 billion. Her claim to a share of the estate was still being contested at the time of her death.
10. Which 'TV chef' is believed to have committed suicide by hanging in his hotel room in Kayserberg, France in 2018?

Answer: Anthony Bourdain

Bourdain, a native New Yorker, was the ever cool host of the classic cooking come travel show 'Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations' (2005-12). Bourdain was in France working on an episode of his then current TV program 'Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown' which focussed on the food, culture and even politics of a particular region or location.

This episode he was filming was centred around Strasbourg, France.
