Although a skilled magician and a member of the Magic Circle, he developed an act where his magical tricks went wrong and got plenty of laughs.
However, to actually show his true skills he would suddenly throw in a magical trick that did actually work and surprise the entire audience. Sadly, he had a heart attack while performing on TV and subsequently passed away when admitted to the hospital.

He first became known to UK audiences on radio in "The Goon Show". However, he will always be remembered by international audiences in the "Pink Panther" series of films.
It was here that he played the character of the incompetent, Chief Inspector Clouseau in five films. He appeared in movies such as "Lolita", "Dr. Strangelove", "What's New, Pussycat" and "Casino Royale".
He was nominated three times for an Academy Award.
