A listener writes Connie's radio show saying, "Dear Connie, What is the point of Valentine's Day? I mean there is not a lot to it. I spend the whole night on February 13 signing silly cards that have a picture of a bear on them, saying "Have a Beary Good Valentine's Day. Is there anything more to it than that? Signed, All Valentined Out".

Answer: He believed married men would focus on their families more than battles and victory.

Soldiers approached the Roman Emperor, Claudius II, also known as "Claudius the Cruel". When his fighting men asked him if they could spend time with their families, Claudius was outraged. Claudius believed a family man longed only for home not victory. He outlawed all marriages and made a law saying anyone who commits marriage ceremonies would be put to death.

Answer: The emperor had declared war on families.

When he saw the notice, St. Valentine declared that the emperor had declared war on families. He believed every citizen should fight back because marriages were apart of God's law. He told Titus it was impossible to outlaw something that had been created by God. Valentine told Titus marriages were the backbone of families and families were worth fighting for.

When Titus told Valentine that his words could cost him his life, Valentine asked Titus, "Wouldn't you rather die fighting for family than allow the family itself to die?"

Answer: He moved the rocks away from a secret place in the jail wall.

Valentine had previously helped Christians escape imprisonment because of a secret opening in the wall. Valentine moved rocks and helped Titus escape when the guards were not looking. The guards were baffled and told their superiors that "he had disappeared". The emperor told the jailer if it were not for him being his cousin, he would have executed him for allowing Titus to escape.

After being in prison, Titus told Valentine he realized life was short and unpredictable. He asks the woman he loves to marry him. Valentine gave them a congratulations and brought them to his house to marry them right away. However during the ceremony, guards broke in to the house interrupting. Valentine performed the rest of the ceremony on the run and helped Titus and his new wife Paulina escape.

Valentine made friends with the jailer's daughter who gave him food every day. Because of her blindness, the jailer put her to work in the prison because he didn't think she was good for anything else. Valentine tried to encourage Julia by telling her she was kind and beautiful. Julia would pick flowers so Valentine could tell her what they looked like.

Valentine began praying for Julia, and one day she regained her sight. The jailer and Julia both thanked Valentine with tears. Valentine used the instance to share his faith with them. The jailer petitioned the emperor to set Valentine free.

Valentine knew that if he escaped the jailer would be killed for allowing one more prisoner to go free. He told his friends he would not escape because he did not want Julia to live without a father.

Valentine was executed on February 14th. Because of his martyrdom, February the 14th was named St. Valentines Day by the church and dedicated to his honor.

Although Valentine died for his faith, his work continued through Titus and his other friends. They continued to perform weddings until a year later when Claudius died from a plague in battle. The law was overturn and marriages were made legal again.

Valentines day was made a special day to show love and honor families.
