Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A is for 'Aristocats'. What are the names of Duchess' three kittens in this Disney classic?

Answer: Berlioz, Toulouse and Marie

Berlioz is the grey kitten with the red collar, the baby of the three, and named after the composer Hector Berlioz, and plays the piano. Marie is the white kitten with the pink hair bow, the middle child, and a budding singer. Toulouse, named for the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, is the ginger kitten with the blue collar, the oldest kitten, and a talented artist.
2. B is for Bagpuss, the white and pink striped cat created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin. Which of these was NOT one of his fellow toys?

Answer: Ivor the Engine

'Bagpuss, o Bagpuss, o fat furry catpuss, wake up and see this thing that I bring...' Every episode, Emily, Bagpuss' owner, would sing this song and Bagpuss would yawn and come to life, along with his fellow toys. As well as Madeleine, the banjo-playing toad Gabriel and the grumpy wooden bookend, Professor Yaffle, there were also a group of mice who lived in an organ (the Mouse Organ) and sang songs. ('Ivor the Engine' was a series about a Welsh train.)
3. C is for Catbert, an evil ginger cat who makes life a living hell for the staff in the comic strip 'Dilbert'. What is Catbert's job within the organisation?

Answer: Human resources manager

'Catbert, Evil HR Manager' ran the caption for strips featuring Catbert. 'Dilbert' creator Scott Adams came up with the idea of making a cat a HR manager because he liked the combination of cuteness and meanness. Catbert would create unreasonable and sometimes plain ludicrous office policies and threaten employees' jobs, while asking them to scratch his belly or stroke him. Like Dogbert and Dilbert, he wore glasses.
4. D is for Dawn Treader, a ship in the 'Narnia' series by CS Lewis. A few books earlier in the series, there was 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe'. What was the name of the Lion?

Answer: Aslan

Aslan, an allegory for Jesus in the 'Narnia' series, gets his name from the Turkish word for 'lion'. He first appears in 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe', albeit not until halfway through the book, when his return to Narnia signals the coming of spring.

It is also shown in the prequel, 'The Magician's Nephew', that he created Narnia with his singing. In the final book of the series, 'The Last Battle', he brings Narnia to an end and takes its inhabitants to his country, the equivalent of Paradise. (Mr Tumnus is a faun, Caspian is a prince and the hero of the second book in the series, and Reepicheep is a fierce warrior mouse who plays a major role in 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'.)
5. E is for 'everywhere and nowhere', which Schrodinger, a warrant officer for the Nazi organisation Millennium, claimed to be. In which vampire-centric manga, created by Kouta Hirano, would you find him?

Answer: Hellsing

Schrodinger, a young boy with cat ears and a tail, is based on the concept of Schrodinger's cat, and has the power to be 'everywhere and nowhere' at the same time. He appears in Seras Victoria's memories when Zorin Blitz tries to invade her mind, gleefully telling Zorin that she is due to be executed, and is shot in the face by Seras at a meeting, only to reappear instantly at Millennium's headquarters.

He proves to be the key to Alucard's downfall, as when he commits suicide and joins the tide of souls Alucard is consuming, Alucard absorbs him and ceases to exist for fifty years.
6. F is for Felix, the iconic black and white cartoon cat who made his debut in 'Feline Follies'. In which year was it released?

Answer: 1919

'Feline Follies' was a rather primitive-looking black-and-white silent animation released by Paramount Pictures in 1919. Felix was originally known as 'Master Tom', but his name was changed to Felix two cartoons later in 'The Adventures of Felix'. Felix also appeared in a comic strip debuting in 1923, and on various items of merchandise, but the advent of Disney and Mickey Mouse later stole the limelight from him.

He was revamped for an animated series in 1953, with several new characters and a bag of tricks.
7. G is for Garfield, the lazy ginger cat and hero of the comic strip created by Jim Davis. What was the name of the annoying grey kitten who Garfield saw as a rival?

Answer: Nermal

Nermal was a small grey kitten, the self-described 'world's cutest kitten', who Garfield disliked immensely. Garfield would threaten to send him off to Abu Dhabi, or boot him through the door, leaving a kitten-shaped hole. Garfield even had a song, 'Abu Dhabi', in which he told Nermal how great the UAE was and how much he'd enjoy it there.

In the 2004 film, Nermal was a Siamese cat and was Garfield's friend instead. (Jon Arbuckle was Garfield's long-suffering owner, Odie was Jon's stupid dog, and Arlene was a female cat with buck teeth and Garfield's love interest.)
8. H is for 'The Herbs', an animated series about a group of characters named after various herbs. The narrator was a very friendly lion with a green mane. What herb was he named after?

Answer: Parsley

'I'm a very friendly lion called Parsley...' Parsley the Lion would sing at the beginning of 'The Herbs'. Parsley's mane and tail were both made of parsley, and he would often stand at the gate of the herb garden and wave at the viewer. Although he could not actually talk, the narrator voiced his thoughts.

His best friends were Dill the dog and Sage the owl (Bayleaf was the gardener). 'The Herbs' also featured a couple of aristocrats, Sir Basil and Lady Rosemary; a policeman, Constable Knapweed; and the witch Belladonna.
9. Is is for India, where 'The Jungle Book' is set. Who provided the voice for the evil tiger Shere Khan in the 2016 live-action film?

Answer: Idris Elba

Shere Khan is a major antagonist in all versions of 'The Jungle Book'. He was voiced by George Sanders in the original Disney film, and Idris Elba in the 2016 version. In the latter, he is revealed to have killed Mowgli's father, which left him with severe scars and a hatred of humans.

He also kills Akela and takes over his wolf pack, and is eventually killed by Mowgli, who lures him into a pit of fire. Sir Ben Kingsley played Bagheera the panther, Bill Murray played Baloo the bear, and Scarlett Johanssen played Kaa the snake, who was originally male.
10. J is for 'Just So Stories', a series of tales by Rudyard Kipling. What is the correct name for the story featuring a cat and a pair of ancient humans?

Answer: The Cat Who Walked By Himself

'The Cat Who Walked By Himself' tells the stories of how humans domesticated animals such as the dog, sheep and cow, but not the cat, as the cat preferred to be independent. Throughout the story, the cat would say, "I am the cat who walked by himself, and all places are alike to me." The wild animals grow curious when they see a fire in a cave where the Man and Woman are living, and smell roast meat, and one by one, they agree to serve the humans and become domesticated.

The Cat tricks the Woman into praising him three times, for making her baby laugh, helping the baby get to sleep and catching a mouse, and drinks her milk, but the Man throws things at him and the Dog chases him.
11. K is for Kerry Katona. Of which feline-sounding pop group was she an original member, before being replaced by Jenny Frost?

Answer: Atomic Kitten

The original line-up of Liverpool-based pop group Atomic Kitten consisted of Kerry Katona, Liz McLarnon and Natasha Hamilton. (Another member, Heidi Range, left before the group recorded any material, and later found success with the Sugababes.) Katona left before the single 'Whole Again' was released, and was replaced by Jenny Frost, formerly of Eurovision contenders Precious.

She achieved media attention for her various relationships and struggles with bipolar disorder. The group later reunited, minus Frost, for a TV series featuring other '90s pop acts such as B*witched and 911.
12. L is for Lion-O, the hero of 'Thundercats'. Which of these answers was NOT a real Thundercat?

Answer: Kooga

Cheetara was the main female Thundercat, and a very fast runner. She wielded a staff and had a sixth sense. Panthro was the physically strongest Thundercat, and a genius mechanic and pilot. Bengali, one of the minor characters, was a blacksmith, based on a white variant of the Bengal tiger.

The main group also featured Tygra, the scientist and second-in-command of the group; Jaga, an ancient warrior who appears as a ghost; Snarf, Lion-O's old nanny and the team mascot; and Wilykit and Wilykat, a pair of young twins (Wilykit was the girl and Wilykat was the boy) who were based on wildcats.

There was a Thundercat based on the cougar/puma, but her name was Pumyra.
13. M is for Mister Mistoffelees, a feline magician and one of the characters of the musical 'Cats'. According to the lyrics of 'Mister Mistoffelees', what colour cat is he?

Answer: Black

As the song, and the original poem by TS Eliot, say: "He is quiet and small, he is black/From his ears to the tip of his tail." Mister Mistoffelees is renowned for his magical tricks, such as pulling nine kittens out of a hat. However, the character's stage outfit is more in keeping with a tuxedo cat, as an all-black outfit would not show up easily under the stage lights.

He has one of the most difficult roles in the show in terms of choreography, and wears a black velvet outfit covered with flashing lights for his character song.

He restores the lights and saves Old Deuteronomy, the ancient leader of the Jellicle tribe.
14. N is for 'Nyan Cat', an internet meme which appeared on Youtube in 2011. What kind of food item does the Nyan Cat have for its body?

Answer: A Pop Tart

Nyan Cat consists of a pixellated animation of a smiling grey cat, with a Pop Tart for a body, flying through space and leaving a rainbow trail. The animated GIF was created by Christopher Torres, who was asked to draw a Pop Tart and a cat and came up with an image combining the two, based on his own cat Marty.

The song playing in the video is sung by Vocaloid Miku Hatsune; the word 'nya' is Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound of a cat meowing. Many international varieties exist, such as a Mexican cat with a moustache and a taco for a body.
15. O is for Officer Dibble, the policeman who is constantly annoyed by Top Cat and his friends. Which of these is NOT a member of Top Cat's gang of alley cats?

Answer: Lippy

Although Lippy is a fellow Hanna-Barbera character, and a feline, he's actually a lion and not a cat. His best friend is Hardy Har Har, a miserable spotted hyena. As for Top Cat's gang, Choo Choo is the pink one in the white polo neck sweater, Fancy-Fancy is the flirtatious brown one with the scarf, and Brain is the ironically-named dimwitted ginger cat in the purple t-shirt.

The gang also features Spook, a laid-back green cat with a black tie, and Benny the Ball, a chubby little blue cat in a white jacket. Top Cat frequently annoys Dibble by using his phone, causing trouble in the alleyway and deliberately getting Dibble's name wrong ('Dribble' is a favourite nickname).
16. P is for Pfeiffer, as in Michelle. In which 'Batman' film did she play Catwoman?

Answer: Batman Returns

Catwoman, aka Serena Kyle, has also been played by Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway and Lee Meriweather in various films, and Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt in the original TV series starring Adam West. In 'Batman Returns', she turns to crime after her evil former boss Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) tries to kill her.

She also has a pet cat. Annette Bening was originally going to play the role, with Pfeiffer as Vicki Vale, but Pfeiffer got the role instead when Bening dropped out due to pregnancy. Pfeiffer took kickboxing classes and learned to handle a whip in order to prepare for the role.
17. Q is for queen, the position of Sarabi in 'The Lion King'. What is the name of her cub who 'just can't wait to be king'?

Answer: Simba

Sarabi's little cub Simba, of course, grew up to be the titular 'Lion King' who takes back the Pride Lands and avenges his father Mufasa's death at the hands of his evil uncle Scar. 'Sarabi' means 'mirage' in Swahili. She becomes Queen Dowager after Simba's mate Nala becomes the queen of the Pride Lands.

Some fans of both Disney and Shakespeare have compared 'The Lion King' with 'Hamlet', though one major difference is that Sarabi, unlike Hamlet's mother, does not marry Scar (his 'Hamlet' counterpart would be Claudius).
18. R is for Roobarb, a green cartoon dog with a vivid imagination. What was the name of the pink cat who lived next door to him?

Answer: Custard

You'd think that Roobarb would be the pink one, but it was actually the other way round. 'Roobarb' had an incredibly catchy theme tune that was later released as a dance single in 1992 by the British electronic group Shaft. Episodes had names like 'When It Wasn't Thursday' and 'When Roobarb Found Sauce'. Custard was rather more cynical than the green dog and would try to sabotage his plans, although they sometimes had their friendlier moments, such as when Custard dressed up as Father Christmas for Roobarb's Christmas party.
19. S is for 'smeg', a popular exclamation on the sci-fi comedy 'Red Dwarf', which featured a humanoid creature evolved from cats and known simply as 'the Cat'. What was the name of the Cat's ancestor, a black cat belonging to Dave Lister?

Answer: Frankenstein

While on the mining ship Red Dwarf, Lister was forced to either have Frankenstein - who was not supposed to be on the ship - put down, or be put into stasis as punishment. He chose the latter, and ended up being kept in stasis for 3 million years after a nuclear accident on the ship killed the rest of the crew. Unbeknownst to Lister, Frankenstein was pregnant and gave birth to kittens, which evolved into humanoids with flattened faces and fangs.

The Cat, played by Danny John-Jules, was the only remaining member of this new race, known as Felis sapiens.

He had an enhanced sense of smell and a very large outfit collection.
20. T is for 'toujours gai', the catchphrase of Mehitabel, an alley cat who believes in reincarnation, and the companion of Archy in a series of newspaper columns written by Don Marquis. What kind of creature is Archy?

Answer: Cockroach

'Toujours gai', or 'always happy', was the motto of Mehitabel, a capricious cat who hated dogs and believed in reincarnation. She lived with Archy, an intelligent cockroach who typed by headbutting the keys of a typewriter (columns purported to be written by Archy were typed in lower case, except one time when Archy discovered the Caps Lock key). Occasionally, Archy would attempt to write poetry.

A musical featuring the two characters was recorded in 1953 and 1954, and starred Eddie Bracken as Archy and Carol Channing as Mehitabel.
21. U is for 'U Krazy Katz', a single released by which British pop duo in 1995?

Answer: PJ & Duncan

PJ & Duncan were Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who met on the set of Newcastle youth club drama 'Byker Grove'. PJ and Duncan were the names of the characters they respectively played. They performed the song 'Tonight I'm Free' on the show, which they later released as a single. 'U Krazy Katz' was from their second album, 'Top Katz', and charted at Number 15 on the UK singles charts.

After their pop career, they went on to become a TV presenter duo on shows such as 'I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!'
22. V is for Viking helmets, which were worn by a group of animated white kittens in a video for Electric 6's 'Gay Bar'. On which comedy website, created by Joel Veitch, did this video and other similar videos featuring dancing kittens originate?

Answer: Rathergood.com

As well as the dancing Viking kittens, Rathergood.com's kitten videos include 'Northern' kittens in flat caps smoking cigarettes and playing along to Elbow's cover of 'Independent Women'; angry-looking tabby kittens in military uniforms marching to Laibach's 'Tanz mit Laibach'; and the same white kittens also playing along to the White Stripes' 'Fell in Love with a Girl'. Veitch's animations hit the mainstream when he made an advert for Crusha milkshake, based loosely on the Northern Kittens video.
23. W is for World Cup. In 2018, which 1996 song by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds became the unofficial anthem of the England team?

Answer: Three Lions

'Three Lions' refers to the crest worn by the England football team. The song was originally released for Euro '96, then re-released for the World Cup two years later with different lyrics. It experienced a revival in 2018, with 'it's coming home' becoming the unofficial slogan of the England team. Sadly, football did not come home, but went to France instead after Croatia knocked England out in the quarter finals.
24. X is for x-rated, and one cartoon film about a cat certainly was! Based on a comic strip by Robert Crumb, it featured the adventures of a cat living in '60s New York City. What was the name of the titular cat?

Answer: Fritz

'Fritz the Cat' is one cartoon you shouldn't show the kids! In fact, it was the first animated film to receive an X rating, due to the amount of sex, drugs and violence. Fritz himself was a grey tabby cat in a stripy jumper and something of a con artist.

In the film, he joins a group of revolutionaries and tries to blow up a power station, but has a change of heart and is nearly killed while trying to remove some dynamite.
25. Z is for zoo - I'm skipping Y - the home of a group of animals in the 2005 film 'Madagascar'. Central Park Zoo, to be precise. Bored with their routine lives, the animals - a lion, a zebra, a giraffe, a hippo and a group of penguins - escape the zoo in the hope of returning to the wild. Who voiced Alex, the lion?

Answer: Ben Stiller

Ben Stiller plays Alex, a performing lion and the leader of the group. David Schwimmer of 'Friends' fame is Melman, a neurotic giraffe, and Chris Rock is Marty, a cheerful zebra. Sacha Baron-Cohen is King Julien, an obnoxious ring-tailed lemur that the animals meet after being washed up on the island of Madagascar.
