Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) was elected President of the United States after serving two terms as Governor of New Hampshire. Prior to that, he served as the U.S. Representative for New Hampshire's First Congressional District. Prior to entering political life, Bartlet was a college professor.

Josiah Bartlet is named after the real life Josiah Bartlet, one of the real life men from New Hampshire who signed the Declaration of Independence.
