Besides Vic's parents, Professor Hamilton, Murray Takamoto, and Kitty Faulkener have also worked there. S.T.A.R. Labs made its first appearance in "Superman" #246, which went on sale in 1971.

Vic paid a visit to his parents at S.T.A.R. Labs on a day when they were observing alternate dimensions via an experimental device. An alien creature used the technology to cross into our dimension and murdered Vic's mother and severely injured Vic, tearing half of his face away, among other wounds. Vic's father used experimental prosthetics to repair Vic, leaving the boy angry and isolated, but alive. Vic's origin story was recounted in the first issue of the 1982 miniseries "Tales of the Teen Titans".

Traveling there using zeta beams, the team found their means of transportation terribly disrupted, and the accident fused together Cyborg and Firestorm.
