Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob Backlund's six year WWF Heavyweight Championship reign was nearly interrupted on November 19th, 1981, when the title was held up after a match at Madison Square Garden because a winner couldn't be determined. Who was Backlund's opponent in that match?

Answer: Greg Valentine

Backlund and Valentine were wearing identical black trunks that night and a dazed referee confused the two as he made the three count with Backlund pinning Valentine. It was decided, after an investigation, that the title would remain vacant until the two met for a rematch at MSG one month later, which Backlund won.

Outside of New York city, however, the hold up was not mentioned and Backlund continued to defend the championship.
2. Who were the first African Americans to win the WWE Tag Team Championship?

Answer: Tony Atlas and Rocky Johnson

Atlas and Johnson's victory was treated by the WWE as breaking a significant racial barrier when it happened in 1983. Though they were the first black tag team to win the title, WWE Tag Team Championship history was already a testament to ethnic and racial diversity. The title had been held by wrestlers of Asian, Arab, Latin American, Native American and Caucasian descent.

Ironically, Atlas and Johnson won the belts from the Wild Samoans, the first Polynesian team to win the championship.
3. Who wrestled the Iron Sheik in a Boot-Camp Match "to defend America's honor" in June of 1984 at Madison Square Garden?

Answer: Sgt. Slaughter

Slaughter was one of the WWE's most popular faces at the time and the Sheik had huge momentum coming off his championship run. Their memorable feud is one of many parelles in their storied careers. Others include both wrestlers holding the WWE Heavyweight Championship and dropping it to Hulk Hogan, being members of the three man Triangle of Terror (when the Sheik wrestled as Col. Mustafa) and being two of the only wrestlers to use the Camel Clutch.

Slaughter won the Boot-Camp Match.
4. How many years had The Fabulous Moolah held the WWE Woman's Championship when she lost it to Wendy Richter at "The Brawl to Settle it All?"

Answer: 28 years

In 1983, the WWE acquired the NWA Women's Championship and made it the WWE Women's Championship. Moolah was champion at the time and the WWE recognized her entire time as champion as a continuous reign, not recognizing any of the other champions who had briefly held the belt.

Moolah would regain belt from Richter and hold it for nearly another two years.
5. What object did Bob Orton repeatedly use as a weapon throughout 1985?

Answer: A cast

Orton broke his arm in his match against Jimmy Snuka at "The War to Settle the Score." He then wore a cast on his left arm for close to a year, despite questions about the legitimacy of the injury. The cast played a part in many angles and matches, including the main event at "Wrestlemania".
6. On a July 1985 edition of "Championship Wrestling", managers Jimmy Hart, Bobby Heenan, Johnny Valiant, Freddy Blassie and Mr. Fuji came to the ring during a match to bid for the services of a high-profile newcomer. Who was it?

Answer: Randy Savage

Savage thanked the managers for their consideration, then introduced his new manager, Miss Elizabeth, his real life wife and the future First Lady of wrestling.
7. In the fall of 1986, the WWE began airing promotional vignettes of a wrestler who hailed from Australia's Northern Territories. After a build up of several months, the 300 pound Aussie defeated Steve Lombardi in his television debut. He then won a series of mid-card matches before quickly being demoted to jobber. In a two year WWE career, he wouldn't make the card of a single Pay Per View event and would have the distinction of being a jobber with his own entrance music. Who was this failed push?

Answer: Outback Jack

Jack had size, but he was awkward and extremely limited in the ring, and he quickly lost credibility.
8. On an October 1987 edition of "Saturday Night's Main Event", Randy Savage completed a face turn when Hulk Hogan saved him from an attack by a heel gang. Who led the attack?

Answer: The Honky Tonk Man

Savage was wrestling Honky Tonk for the WWE Intercontinental Championship when the Hart Foundation interfered and began beating Savage. After Honky Tonk shoved Elisabeth and smashed a guitar across Savage's head, Elizabeth summoned Hogan from the dressing room to save Savage. Savage thanked Hogan to complete the face turn, which paved the way for the formation of the Mega Powers and Savage's first WWE Heavyweight Championship run.
9. Which tag team squared off against itself when its members drew 1st and 2nd at the 1989 Royal Rumble?

Answer: Demolition

Ax and Smash entered first and second respectively and went at it for two minutes before joining forces to take on the third entrant, Andre the Giant.

The rumble would be won by Big John Studd.
10. Besides being wrestlers who performed for the WWE in the 1980s, what do Hulk Hogan, Harley Race, the Ultimate Warrior, Stan Hanson, Kamala and the Masked Superstar have in common?

Answer: They all body slammed Andre the Giant

During Andre's career, promotions succeeded in portraying body slams of the Giant as historic events. In fact, taking slams was a part of Andre's repertoire in every phase of his career and he worked with several wrestlers who were strong enough to do the maneuver.

The actual number of wrestlers who slammed Andre is in doubt because detailed records were not kept of many of his matches.
