Hagar the Horrible is a Norwegian viking who is portrayed as scruffy, overweight and with a red beard. He appears in the comic strip of the same name, was created by Dik Browne and first appeared in February 1973. When Dik Browne retired in 1988 his son Chris Browne took over creating the comic strip. The strip is syndicated in many newspaper both in the USA and around the world.

'The Saga of Erik the Viking' was published in 1983. It tells the story of a viking named Erik who goes in search of "the land where the sun goes at night". The novel recounts the adventures he and his men have during the search including encountering sea monsters and giants. Terry Jones loosely adapted the book into a film called 'Erik the Viking' in 1989 which featured similar characters but a different plot.

The series depicts the rise to power of King Cnut the Great who was a real life viking king of Denmark, England and Norway and is most famously known for the story of how he tried to hold back the tide.

Noggin is the kind and simple king of the Northmen who often has to get out of trouble caused by his chief enemy Nogbad the bad.

The film was released as a double feature along with the movie 'The Astounding She-Monster'. Corman has said he wanted to make the film after seeing a presentation about what could be achieved with special effects but that due to budget constraints much of what he wanted to do wasn't possible.

The story of the film revolves around a group of viking women who go in search of their missing men and end up getting captured by the same barbarians who have captured their men.

Despite appearing prominently in the title the giant sea serpent only has a small role in the movie.
