Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what comic book issue did the Avengers-Defenders War storyline begin?

Answer: Avengers #115

The prologue to the story began in "Avengers" #115, which led into "Defenders" #8. The story then continued for the next three months in each title, giving readers something to look forward to for the entire summer of 1973. The entire story can be found in "Avengers" #115-188 and "Defenders" Volume 1, #8-11.

It was also reprinted in 2002 in the trade paperback, "The Avengers Defenders War".
2. Who were the villain or villains behind the conflict between the two super-hero teams?

Answer: Dormammu and Loki

Dormammu was the schemer behind the whole plan. He wanted the Evil Eye in order that he could finally conquer Earth. Dormammu was bound by his word to Doctor Strange to never invade Earth's dimension again, so the flame-headed being planned to use the power the Evil Eye to expand his dimension until it engulfed Earth as well.

He enlisted Loki, the God of Evil, to help him by working as his contact on Earth. In return, Loki would be cured of the blindness he had suffered in battle with his half-brother, the Mighty Thor.
3. How were Doctor Strange and the Defenders tricked into following the villain's plan?

Answer: They were tricked into believing that the Evil Eye could cure the Black Knight.

While the Black Knight's body was frozen in stone, Doctor Strange made contact with the hero's spirit, which was trapped in the dimension known as the Netherworld. Dormammu and Loki were able to change the substance of the communication so that it seemed as if the Black Knight was pleading for Doctor Strange's help.

They also made sure that the Defenders knew that the Evil Eye was the only item that could possibly bring the hero back to life.
4. Who originally stole the Evil Eye from its guardian, Prestor John?

Answer: The Human Torch

In the events of "Fantastic Four" Volume 1, #54 (retold in flashbacks several times in this story), Prestor John was awoken by the Human Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot, and the Torch stole the Evil Eye, hoping to use it to breach the impenetrable walls of the Great Refuge (home to the Inhumans and his girlfriend, Crystal). The hot-headed young hero did not know that the mystical device was building up to an overload. Luckily, Wyatt Wingfoot was able to use a Polarizer Gun to shoot the Evil Eye out of the Torch's hand, right before it exploded with the force of a nuclear bomb. The Torch survived, but the Evil Eye was seemingly destroyed.

Unknown to any at that time, the explosion had caused the Evil Eye to fracture into six identical pieces, and the forces drove them down into and through the planet. This was part of a safeguard built into the device by the weaponsmiths of Avalon, so no one who ever tried to use the Evil Eye at full power would ever get a chance to do so again.
5. Which of the following locales was NOT a location of a piece of the Evil Eye?

Answer: Tokyo, Japan

The six locations of the remnants of the Evil Eye were (in order of their discovery): Rurutu, French Polynesia; Monterrey, Mexico; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Sucre, Bolivia; Osaka, Japan; and Los Angeles, California.
6. Who did the Armored Avenger, Iron Man, face off against for a piece of the Evil Eye?

Answer: Hawkeye the Archer

Hawkeye was (at that time) briefly estranged from the Avengers, and had helped Doctor Strange and the Defenders when they battled the Red Ghost. Much like their first meeting in "Tales of Suspense" #57, Hawkeye and Iron Man battled, this time in Monterrey, Mexico. Hawkeye won out over Shellhead and made off with the Evil Eye segment by using a magnetic arrow to make Iron Man's repulsor rays miss him and hit a building.

In the confusion as Iron Man worked on saving anyone in the damaged building, the conniving archer made his getaway.
7. Which hero said the following: "We were no more than ants to him! When he felt like it, he just stepped on us!"?

Answer: The Black Panther

The Black Panther was referring to Doctor Strange. The Sorcerer Supreme had been trying to face off against the Panther and Mantis using his martial skills, but decided that the possibility of him being defeated by two of the Avengers' most skilled combatants was not worth the risk of losing the piece of the Evil Eye that they fought for.

A quick incantation and the Evil Eye was his, and the two Avengers were left hoping for their comrades to be able to reverse this trend of seeming helplessness.
8. Who interfered in the battle between Captain America and the Sub-Mariner, briefly taking the Evil Eye section as his own?

Answer: Sunfire

The mutant Sunfire took the Evil Eye section as the Shield Slinger and the Lord of Atlantis battled in the seas surrounding Osaka, Japan. Claiming it himself so that they would learn a lesson in respecting national boundaries, Sunfire was soon bested by the Sub-Mariner.

The Evil Eye dropped into Captain America's hands, but the obviously inequality of power forced him to give it back to the Sub-Mariner ... though not before extracting a little cooperation and trust from his old adversary and friend, as both heroes realized that their reasons for striving for the Evil Eye were not the same.
9. Which of the following heroes was NOT shown defending the world against the invading inhuman hordes?

Answer: The Punisher

The Punisher hadn't yet been made the big-time at the time of this storyline. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, the Inhumans, Nick Fury, Ka-Zar, Doctor Doom and even Thanos were all shown doing what they could to stem the onslaught. They were alll hampered by the fact that many of the invaders were actually humans transformed by the effects of the merger with Dormammu's dimension.
10. While numerous inkers worked on this landmark stories, each series had only one penciller. Sal Buscema provided the art for "The Defenders", but who was the penciller on "The Avengers"?

Answer: Bob Brown

Bob Brown was a very reliable and professional artist, who had worked on many top books at both Marvel Comics and DC Comics. His art graced the pages of "The Avengers", "Daredevil", "Challengers of the Unknown", "Rawhide Kid", "Batman" and "The Brave and the Bold" to mention just a few.

Sadly, Bob Brown passed away not too long after this storyline ended, succumbing to leukemia.
