Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why are Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson reluctant to accept Naomi Elton as a pupil?

Answer: She is over fifteen and has a 'warped' personality, according to her aunt.

Although Naomi is disabled, and has to walk with a stick, this is not the reason why Miss Annersley is reluctant to accept her as a pupil (and Miss Wilson makes it clear that she will not allow the girls to bully Naomi). Because of problems with Yseult Pertwee, who was a senior when she joined the school, the school will not accept girls over fifteen as a result.

However, Naomi is sixteen, and therefore has to be placed into the Sixth Form. Peter Chester, whose daughters Janice and Barbara are pupils at the school, knows Naomi because she was one of his patients, and goes over the headmistresses' heads by writing to Madge Russell and begging her to make an exception for Naomi, as she has nowhere else to go. Miss Annersley and Miss Dene also worry that Naomi's personality could put her at odds with the other girls.
2. What religion is Naomi?

Answer: Agnostic

Jo wonders if Naomi is Jewish because of her name, but Naomi is actually an agnostic, and this causes problems for Mary-Lou Trelawney when she needs to determine what prayers service Naomi will be going to, for administrative reasons. Naomi explains that her aunt took her to different services, depending on the sermon, the music and so on. Miss Dene decides that Naomi will attend Protestant services.

Naomi's lack of faith is one of the many things that causes conflict between her and the other girls; she also makes a very large point of calling herself a 'cripple', making the other girls feel uncomfortable, and is cold and unfriendly to people who try to make conversation with her. (Not that this stops Mary-Lou.)
3. What happens to Naomi during an outdoor art class?

Answer: She brings the wrong stick, slips and bangs her head.

Naomi is very intelligent and does well in most subjects, but art is not one of them. Herr Laubach takes an outdoor art class where the girls are to produce 'snapshot' sketches, drawing people who are skiing nearby. Herr Laubach yells at Naomi about the poor quality of her sketch and orders her to draw something more lifelife. Naomi also loses her temper and gets up abruptly, but she has brought the wrong stick - the one with a rubber tip, instead of the steel-pointed one she uses outdoors.

She slips, bangs her head and knocks herself out, and Herr Laubach is so shaken he decides to retire after the term ends. Joey and Miss Annersley both beg him to stay, but to no avail.
4. Miss Wilson worries that this term will be a 'sickness term', and she turns out to be right when an epidemic spreads through the school. By which illness are both girls and staff affected?

Answer: Scarlet fever

The first signs that something is wrong is when Margot Maynard is moodier than usual, does not eat properly and wakes Emerence Hope up by talking in her sleep. Matron goes to check on her and immediately sends both girls to the school sick bay. Jack Maynard confirms that it is scarlet fever, and his children must have caught it from a young playmate of theirs, as Felix and Felicity Maynard also have it. Scarlet fever spreads rapidly through the school, and several other girls become ill, along with some of the staff. Miss Dene, who is susceptible to illness, has to take time off and the older girls, including Naomi, help with typing and admin. Evadne Lannis, a former pupil from Miss Dene's time, takes her on holiday to France to recover.
5. On the Sixth Form excursion to St Moritz, Naomi and Mary-Lou spend some time alone together, and Naomi tells Mary-Lou about her past. How did Naomi become disabled?

Answer: She was injured in a car crash, which also killed her parents.

The Sixth Formers stay with the Tratschins, a friendly farming family whom Joey knows. While the girls are amusing themselves and Verity Carey has a go on Frau Tratschin's zither, Naomi and Mary-Lou go off together to talk. Naomi tells Mary-Lou about how her parents were killed in a car crash, and that same car crash also damaged her back and legs and made her unable to walk without an aid, and she had to give up her dreams of being a ballet dancer.

It also made her lose her faith. Mary-Lou empathises with Naomi, telling her about the accident she had where she hit her head against a tree, and how she still suffers from back pain herself.

She also reassures Naomi that the doctors at the San may be able to help her.
6. Which two teachers are stuck in the mountain hut with the Sixth Form girls during an avalanche?

Answer: Mlle de Lachenais and Miss Ferrars

An avalanche breaks out while the girls are tobogganing and they manage to get to safety in a nearby hut. Although Naomi is temporarily unconscious, she wakes up inside the hut, where Mary-Lou and the others are sleeping. Naomi worries that the avalanche is G-d punishing her, but Mary-Lou reassures her that that isn't true and that it would mean He was punishing the other girls too. Meanwhile, Miss Ferrars and Mlle de Lachenais find chocolate in their bags, which they decide to melt down for drinks, and Mlle de Lachenais makes a fire. Verity climbs through the window and scoops up snow to melt down for the hot chocolate, and spots a party of mountaineers.

The girls and teachers yodel for help, and Herr Tratschin and some helpers come up to lower food and coffee down for them, and get them out of the hut.
7. Janice Chester, Judy Willoughby, Ailie Russell and friends prank the Sixth Formers and other girls by taking random items of theirs into the Lost Property cupboard. What punishment do Naomi and the prefects come up with for the prank?

Answer: The girls have to return every item to its owner, and apologise to each person individually.

Mary-Lou notices something is up. She and Vi Lucy go to look in the Lost Property cupboard, only to find it crammed full of random people's things, and a few bits and pieces belonging to staff. The Sixth Form are not happy about this, and during a meal, Mary-Lou figures that it was a group of girls in the Lower Fourth, as Ailie and Janice keep glancing at her.

The girls brainstorm punishment ideas, and Naomi comes up with the idea of making the culprits return each item of property to its original owner, and apologise to her in person.

As many of the Sixth Formers are annoyed about the prank and make their feelings known, Janice, Ailie, Judy and co keep a low profile for the rest of the term, especially as Ailie and Janice's older sisters are among the angry prefects.
8. Evadne Lannis turns up at the pantomime and tells Joey that she is engaged. Which other Old Girl from Joey's time is also present?

Answer: Carla von Flugen

Carla von Flügen was one of the girls in Joey's year when Joey was at school; she is Tyrolean, of Italian descent. We learn that Franz, her husband, and her baby daughter are both dead. Joey offers her a place to stay at Freudesheim, and Carla mentions that she is also going to visit Wanda von Glück and Frieda von Ahlen. Evadne breaks the news that she is engaged to Sir Edgar Watson, and will be stepmother to his three children.
9. As St Mildred's have been unable to use girls from the main school due to the epidemic, they enlist the help of several Old Girls for 'Puss in Boots'. Which Old Girl, who was at school during the war years, plays the Lawyer?

Answer: Nancy Canton

Old classmates of Nancy's recognise her when she comes onstage as Master Graball, the Lawyer, and Maeve Bettany shouts, "Nancy Canton! How scrummy!" which embarrasses Nancy, and she almost fluffs her lines. Peggy Bettany, who is playing the Fairy Queen, receives a similar reaction.

As for Tom and Blossom, they play the Ogre and John (the 'Marquis of Carabas') respectively. Clem Barras also appears as the King, Sybil Russell is the Princess, and Bride Bettany is a footman. During the pantomime, Joey has to take Cecil out when she gets restless and cries, and the lights go out twice, eventually forcing the show to end.
10. After the pantomime, the Sixth Form girls receive the shocking news that Naomi fell out of a sidecar while being given a lift home and hit her head, and has been admitted to hospital for urgent surgery. Does she survive the operation?

Answer: Yes

Naomi's classmates are upset about her and want to cancel Spot Supper, but Miss Annersley insists that it must go ahead as Karen has gone to the trouble of cooking all that food, and Naomi would not want other girls to miss out on the fun because of her. Spot Supper goes ahead, but is more subdued than usual. Meanwhile, Naomi is rushed to hospital with fractured ribs and a skull fracture, and is very vulnerable for a while, but survives the operation. The surgeons also hope that they may be able to improve her mobility. Mary-Lou offers to donate blood, but Miss Annersley refuses to let her as the Sanatorium has enough.

Joey goes to the hospital to visit Naomi, as she has no family to see her, and promises to put a column in the 'Times' to let the girls know how Naomi is.
