Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which former mistress from the Tyrol years is Theodora 'Ted' Grantley's cousin, and suggests the Chalet School for her?

Answer: Miss Carthew

Rosalie Dene initially receives a letter from Mrs Grantley, describing Theodora as 'completely hardened', and Joey Maynard is disgusted by how uncaring Mrs Grantley comes across. She later receives a letter from Miss Carthew (now Mrs Walton), who is also Mrs Grantley's cousin, explaining more about Theodora's background: she is the youngest of four children, and there is a considerable age difference between her and her older brothers. Mrs Grantley did not want another child after her twin sons were born, but Theodora was conceived by accident.

The Grantley family had to relocate due to a lack of money, and Mrs Walton comments that she received several letters of complaint from Mrs Grantley over the years. After Theodora was expelled from three schools, Mrs Walton made enquiries and found out that the Chalet School had moved to Switzerland and Joey was living nearby, and made arrangements with the chief trustee of Mr Grantley's estate for sending Theodora there.
2. Why was Theodora expelled from her third school?

Answer: Smoking in the toilets

Of the three schools Theodora attended, the first was a boarding school which Mrs Grantley picked out, and the headmistress asked Mrs Grantley to remove her after she got into trouble for various pranks. The second school was a select one which taught French and fine arts, and Theodora was publicly expelled for bareback riding during a horse riding session.

After a period with a governess, who couldn't cope with her, Theodora was sent to a third school, where one of the teachers had previously known her and warned the staff.

She and a couple of other girls were caught smoking in the girls' toilets at midnight, which was the final straw. Mrs Walton notes in her letter that Theodora has a knack of thinking up very original pranks, and a tendency to get in with the wrong crowd, but is honest and does not lie, cheat or steal. Joey promises to give Theodora a terrible punishment if she gets caught smoking!
3. What is NOT one of Joey's reasons for having Theodora's name changed to 'Ted'?

Answer: She likes girls to have unisex names.

Theodora is named after her father, Theodore, who is considerably older than her mother. Although Joey has a liking for unusual names, she is not keen on the name 'Theodora', seeing it as 'ghastly' and too long. When Theodora comes to school, Len Maynard brings her to meet Joey, and Joey makes it clear to Theodora that she is here to make a new start and that her past will not be held against her. To represent that she is going to turn over a new leaf, she suggests that Theodora change her name to something shorter, like Theo or Ted. Luckily, Theodora agrees to the name change and becomes Ted.
4. Ted goes on a walk with her form, and she forms a trio with Ros Lilley and Len Maynard. The three girls see a little girl crying outside a hut and go to comfort her. Dr Graves is passing by and orders them to stay away from the girl, and to wait for hospital staff to come and get them, and also gives them a vaccination. What disease does the little girl have?

Answer: Smallpox

Dr Graves orders the girls to stay away from the little girl as she has smallpox, and has them all put into quarantine. Ros is kept separate from Len and Ted for a few days as she reacts badly to the injection. Joey is not happy and gives the girls a piece of her mind when she visits them in quarantine, but Len points out she would have done the same. To alleviate the boredom of being in quarantine, the girls ask for work to be sent over and Soeur Marie-Anne, one of the nuns at the Sanatorium and a former teacher, is happy to tutor them and give them work to do. Len and Ros also help Ted with her work, and she makes incredible advances in German. Ted agonises over the urge to pull pranks, knowing that if she were to drag Ros and Len into trouble with her, they would stand by her and she doesn't feel it would be fair on either of them.

She asks Soeur Marie-Anne for help and the nun offers to pray for her and tells her to ask G-d to help her fight the urges to misbehave.
5. What kind of creatures invade the chapel during the Matins service?

Answer: Cockchafers

After Ted comes out of quarantine, she and several other girls and mistresses attend a Vespers service at the local Catholic chapel. During the service, a swarm of cockchafers enter the building and get tangled up in people's hair and hats. The older girls and the mistresses manage to calm things down, but Con Maynard is very shaken by the incident and sleepwalks that night.

She winds up in Ted's cubicle and falls asleep in her bed, and Matron has to wake her up and take her back to her own bed.
6. How does Margot find out about Ted being expelled from three schools?

Answer: She eavesdrops on a conversation between Joey and Miss Dene.

Margot becomes jealous of her sisters' close friendship with Theodora, especially Len, and begins listening to her 'devil'. Con picks up on it and tells Mary-Lou Trelawney about her fears that Margot is jealous of Ted. Meanwhile, Margot is in a bad mood and goes to sit in her special hiding place under a bush in the Maynards' family garden, where her mum is talking to Miss Dene.

She eavesdrops on the conversation after overhearing Joey mention that Ted has been expelled from three schools, and that everyone is impressed with how well she is settling in. Con and Margot get into an argument when Con asks Margot to play tennis and Margot rudely refuses, and tells Con about Ted being expelled in the heat of the moment. Con is disgusted that Margot was eavesdropping and is planning to break up Len's friendship with Ted, and tells her off.
7. Where do Ted and her form go for their half-term expedition?

Answer: Zermatt

Mary-Lou asks Miss Ferrars and Mlle de Lachenais if she can drop out of the Sixth Form trip and go to Zermatt with Vb instead, as she is worried about what's going on between Ted and the triplets and wants to keep an eye on them. Margot makes a nasty comment about Ted's previous school and Len realises that Margot may try and break up their friendship.

The group take a trip up the Gornergrat, where some of the girls suffer altitude sickness, and take a walk past a farm, where a Scottish family are staying nearby.

The family's son loves baby animals and tries to steal a piglet, but the piglet's mother gets angry and chases him, and Miss Wilmot ends up taking an accidental ride on the sow when the sow crashes into her, while Ted rescues the piglet.
8. What is the expensive gift that Emerence buys Margot, which triggers a huge row between Margot and her sisters?

Answer: A clock

On the last day of the trip to Zermatt, the girls go shopping, and Emerence offers to buy Margot a present. What Margot doesn't know is that Emerence is leaving school, and her father has given her a big cheque to spend on presents for her friends, but Emerence is not allowed to tell anyone that she is leaving. Margot spies a pretty little clock in the window of a shop and Emerence buys it for her as a present. Margot doesn't want Len and Con seeing, as she knows both they and her parents will disapprove of her having something so expensive, but she cannot resist taking it out to look at it, and Con notices and comments on it. An argument breaks out among the triplets and Ted, with Margot revealing she knows about Ted's expulsion, hitting Ted and telling her she won't take Len away from her. Mary-Lou comes to break up the fight, and Len slaps Margot to keep her quiet. Mary-Lou takes the triplets, Emerence, Ted and Ros Lilley - who has come with Len - back to their pension and orders them not to say anything about what happened.
9. Throughout the book, various characters are warned that Joey must not be worried as she is going through a difficult pregnancy, and she is also unable to invite Ted over because of it. At the end of the book, she gives birth to twins. What are their names?

Answer: Geoffrey and Philippa

Mary-Lou invites Emerence, Ros, Ted and the triplets for an interview to find out what happened in Zermatt and gives the triplets a telling-off, which ends with her telling Margot to report herself to Miss Annersley. Miss Annersley is angry with Emerence for not putting the cheque in the school bank, but asks Jack Maynard to allow Margot to keep the clock to serve as a reminder.

Although Jack is aware of Margot's bad behaviour and refuses to speak to her for two weeks, Joey is kept out of the loop and Miss Annersley refuses to tell her what happened. Joey has also noticed a change in her daughters' behaviour, and that Len is enjoying her new friendship with Ted. Miss Annersley also meets the new Maynard twins, Geoffrey and Philippa, aka Phil.
10. What does Mary-Lou receive as a special prize from the school?

Answer: A first aid kit

Term ends with a sports day, where Mrs Walton comes to visit Ted, and Mary-Lou and several other girls participate in a fancy dress race, amongst other things. During Prayers the following week, Miss Annersley announces that Mary-Lou has been awarded with a special prize for her leadership and influence within the school, and thinks that she is the epitome of everything a Chalet School girl should be. Joey presents her with a case containing a first aid kit, which she tells Mary-Lou will be beneficial to her when she starts her career as an archaeologist. Mary-Lou is due to go to St Mildred's, the finishing branch, and then on to university to study archaeology.
