Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the game of darts, players throw small missiles (know as darts) towards a circular target. What is this target called?

Answer: Dartboard

Modern dartboards are generally made of either cork, coiled paper, or sisal fibres, and are divided into 20 radial sections, with an inner and outer ring in the centre. A dartboard that meets World Darts Federation (WDF) regulations measures seventeen and three quarters inches in diameter.
2. What is the correct spelling for the line behind which the thrower must stand when taking his or her turn?

Answer: Oche

"Oche" is believed to stem from the Old French "ocher", meaning "cut a deep notch in". The oche is situated seven feet nine and a quarter inches from the dartboard, and ensures that each player is throwing from the same distance.
3. What is the maximum score a player can achieve with one dart?

Answer: 60

The maximum score possible with one dart is achieved by hitting the treble ring of the 20 segment, thus scoring three x 20 = 60. Every dart player strives to achieve this with all three darts during any one particular turn, thereby scoring the maximum three-dart score of "one hundred and eighty"!
4. The inner circle in the centre of the circular target has the same name as a British TV game show that originally aired between 1981 and 1995, and revolved around the game of darts. What name do they share?

Answer: Bullseye

Hitting the bullseye on a dartboard scores a player fifty points. The British TV game show "Bullseye" was presented by comedian Jim Bowen, and combined darts with general knowledge, with contestants having the chance to win prizes such as a car, a holiday, or even a speedboat!
5. In tournament darts, if a dart bounces out of the circular target, the player is allowed to throw that dart again.

Answer: False

Darts generally "bounce out" of the board if they hit the wire separating the scoring segments head-on. Purely bad luck if this happens, the player is unfortunately not allow to rethrow the dart, and loses any points he or she may have scored with that throw.
6. What sporty-sounding nickname was the Scottish darts professional John Wilson known by?

Answer: Jocky

John Thomas Wilson was born on 22nd March 1950 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, with his nickname stemming from his nationality. One of the more popular players on the circuit, Jocky won the World Darts Championship in 1982 and 1989. He died on 24th March 2012 aged 62.
7. Three of these men have won the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship at least once; however one has not, as he is a snooker player. Can you identify the infiltrator?

Answer: Mark Selby

Englishman Phil Taylor has won the PDC World Darts Championship multiple times in the 1990, 2000s, and 2010s, Canadian John Part won the title in 2003 and 2008, and Scotsman Gary Anderson won it in 2015 and 2016. Although a brilliant snooker player, who has won many tournaments on the baize, Mark Selby has never won a professional darts tournament!
8. Most professional matches are made up of a number of sets, which are in turn made up of a number of divisions named for which body parts?

Answer: Legs

There doesn't appear to be a definitive answer as to where the use of the word "leg" to denote an individual dame during a darts match comes from. Some have suggested that it is akin to a "leg" in a race - that is the race (or, in the case of darts, match) is simply broken down into smaller constituent parts.

In most professional tournaments, each leg requires the player to score a total of 501 points to win that leg.
9. What is it called when a player hits a single, double, and triple of the same number with three darts?

Answer: Shanghai

It is believed that the phrase "Shanghai" comes from the old nautical term meaning to drug or use other underhand means to force someone to join a ship's crew, which has the modern-day interpretation of using underhand means to trick someone into doing something.

The use of the phrase in darts is a little tenuous, and likely relates more to the variant of the game known as 'Shanghai' in which scoring a single, double, and triple of the same number with three darts wins the game, effectively "shanghai'ing" the other players out of the game.
10. Which of the following is NOT a possible three-dart checkout score?

Answer: 165

A "checkout score" in darts is the score a player needs to achieve to win the particular leg. It should be remembered that a player must end on either a double or the bullseye to win the leg. The maximum checkout score is 170, which is achieved by throwing treble twenty, treble twenty, bullseye.

A checkout score of 160 can be achieved by throwing treble twenty, treble twenty, double twenty, and a checkout score of 155 can be achieved by throwing treble twenty, treble nineteen, double nineteen.

A checkout score of 165 is NOT possible with three darts.
