Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. David was a shepherd and watched his family's sheep while his brothers were soldiers at war. Who told David to visit his brothers and take them some food?

Answer: his father

David's father Jesse worried about David's brothers and wanted to know how they were doing.

"One day Jesse said to David, 'Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers. And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing.'"(1 Samuel 17:17-18,NLT)

David did as his father told him. He took the basket of cheese and bread to his brothers, who were in a valley with the King of Israel, fighting against the Philistines.
2. When David arrived to see his brothers, he saw a giant over 9ft tall demanding a fight between two men. What was the challenge Goliath gave?

Answer: Two men would fight, and the loser's army would be slaves.

When David arrived to see his brothers, he saw them hiding from Goliath. Goliath was shouting at the Israelite army to give him a challenge.

"Goliath stood and shouted a taunt across to the Israelites.
'Why are you all coming out to fight?' he called. 'I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of Saul. Choose one man to come down here and fight me! If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves! I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!' When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken." (1 Samuel 17:8-11, NLT)

David was angry when no one stepped forward to fight. His brothers told him that Goliath was huge, and to look at his size. No one thought they could defeat him.
3. David was angry when no one stepped forward to fight Goliath. How did David convince the king that he could fight the giant, despite his size and age?

Answer: He told the king he had fought a bear and lion.

David told King Saul not to worry about Goliath because he would fight the giant. King Saul told David not to be ridiculous. He told David Goliath was huge and had been fighting since he was a small child. King Saul told David there was no way that he could defeat him.

David changed the king's mind when he told him about his shepherd adventures. He told the king that God had helped him defeat a lion and bear.

"David persisted. 'I have been taking care of my father's sheep and goats,' he said. 'When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!'" (1 Samuel 17:34-37, NLT)

The King told David he could fight Goliath. He told David God would be with him.
4. The king tried to get David to wear his battle clothes to fight Goliath but they were uncomfortable. What did David decide to use?

Answer: five smooth stones

"Saul gave David his own armor - a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. 'I can't go in these,' he protested to Saul. 'I'm not used to them.' So David took them off again. "(1 Samuel 17: 39, NLT)

David went down to a river and picked up five smooth stones. He used took his shepherd sling that he had with him when he killed animals that had tried to harm sheep. He told King Saul that God would be with him and went off to face Goliath. (1 Samuel 17:40)
5. Goliath laughed when he saw David. He was expecting a fierce warrior. What did David say in response to Goliath's insults?

Answer: "You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord!"

Goliath was shocked when he saw the young boy approach him for a fight.
"'Am I a dog,' he roared at David, 'that you come at me with a stick?' And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 'Come over here, and I'll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!' Goliath yelled." (1 Samuel 17: 41-44, NLT)

David did not run away. He approached Goliath without fear and said, "You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven's Armies-the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." He told Goliath that he would kill him and everyone present would know that there was a God in Israel. (1 Samuel:45-47)
6. Goliath was heavily covered by his metal armour. Where did the rock in David's slingshot hit him?

Answer: in the forehead

"Reaching into his shepherd's bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground."
(1 Samuel 17: 49, NLT)

The stone hit Goliath in the forehead and knocked him to the ground. It was a place in Goliath's armor where he was not protected by metal from being hit or stabbed.
7. David used Goliath's own sword to kill him.

Answer: True

David knocked Goliath unconscious and then used the giant's own armor to finish the job.

"David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. Then David ran over and pulled Goliath's sword from its sheath. David used it to kill him and cut off his head." (1 Samuel 17:50-51, NLT)
8. When the Philistines saw that their champion had been defeated by David, how did they react?

Answer: They ran away in fear.

When the Philistines saw David kill Goliath, they took off running towards their home. The Israelite army came out of hiding and started chasing after them.

David's act of courage inspired the rest of the Israelite army to have courage as well.

"When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. Then the men of Israel and Judah gave a great shout of triumph and rushed after the Philistines, chasing them as far as Gathg and the gates of Ekron." (1 Samuel 17:51-52, NLT)
9. After David won his big victory, King Saul wanted to know more about him. Who did he ask David questions about?

Answer: his father

After the battle was over, King Saul wanted to know more about David's family and where he was from. King Saul sent his general to find more information about David's father.

Usually fathers were responsible for training their sons to be brave and skillful. They also taught their children about God and the scriptures.

David told King Saul that he was the son of Jesse and was from Bethlehem. He told the king about his dad. (1 Samuel 17: 57-58)
10. When David and the army came back to Jerusalem, the city threw them a party. What was the song that they sang in honor of David and King Saul?

Answer: "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!"

King Saul made David a commander in the army and everyone celebrated David's victory.

"When the victorious Israelite army was returning home after David had killed the Philistine, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul. They sang and danced for joy with tambourines and cymbals. This was their song: "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!" (1 Samuel 18:6-7, NLT)

David was so popular it made King Saul and his brothers jealous. However, David still focused on his family and God. He continued to put God first in everything he did.
