Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of "The Chalet School and Jo", Madge is going to train as a Guider. Where do Jo and the Robin spend the holidays while she's away?

Answer: At Pretty Maids in the New Forest with Miss Maynard.

Jo and the Robin accompany Madge to England and spend some of the time visiting relations, before Madge goes to her training camp while the girls stay with their Mathematics/Geography mistress in her family home.

At this point Dr. Jem is only just starting to have the Sanatorium at the Sonnalpe built.
Mademoiselle has gone home to Paris, taking her cousins, Simone and Renee, with her.
The Mensch family provided hospitality only a few months previously, at Christmas.
2. Before she joins the Chalet School, where does Princess Elisaveta spend the holidays?

Answer: Elmiano.

Elisaveta has been very ill, and the doctor recommends the Chalet School to her father, Prince Carol, to prevent a recurrence. She spends the holiday at a favourite seaside resort to complete her convalescence before she goes to school.

Firarto is the capital of Belsornia, and Elisaveta's home.
Palermo and Sorrento are both in Italy.
3. Why has Grizel returned with a new hairstyle, after a holiday trip to Salzburg?

Answer: Her hair was badly singed in a hotel fire.

Evadne Lannis's father has taken his daughter, Grizel, Jo and the Robin to Salzburg when he has a business meeting. Unfortunately there is a fire in the hotel where they are staying, and Grizel's hair suffers while she helps Mr. Lannis to rescue the other girls. The story is given in "The Head Girl of the Chalet School".

Grizel was still only seventeen at the time. As a result of the accident she was unable to put her hair up a few months later. She was quite happy with her curls, and, since the hair was naturally curly, had no need for a perm.
4. What change has taken place during the holidays at the Chalet School just before Jo returns for her last term there?

Answer: A new house has been built to accommodate the middle school.

Although Jo had known about the new building, she was surprised to find that, as senior prefects, she and her three closes friends were to have new rooms there to help look after the middles. The story is told in "The New House at the Chalet School".

Mademoiselle doesn't retire until ill health forces her a year later.
The school is affected by a flood in its first year, but not seriously enough to damage the building.
The school is never fully co-educational, although it does take boys when they have a kindergarten later on.
5. Why do over seventy girls leave the school during the Easter holidays in 1938?

Answer: Both of these reasons.

In "The Chalet School in Exile", the situation of the school in the Austrian Tyrol becomes very uncertain after the Anschluss. The Nazis are suspicious of the foreign community on the Sonnalpe.
6. The Second World War forces another move for the school in 1940. Where does it resettle?

Answer: Plas Howell in Armishire.

The school is offered the loan of Plas Howell by its owner, Ernest Howell, in return for the care of his much younger sister, Gwensi. "The Chalet School Goes to It" (or "The Chalet School at War" in paperback) tells the story.

Plas Gwyn is the house taken by Jack Maynard for his family to live in.
The school doesn't move to Switzerland until several years after the end of the war.
Sarres is the name of the house, near Jerbourg in Guernsey, where the school had first re-opened in August 1939, after fleeing from Austria.
7. At the end of Lavender Leigh's first term at the Chalet School, who is invited to stay at the Dragon House with Jesanne Gellibrand and Lois Bennet?

Answer: Both of these.

Jesanne invites Lilamani to stay with her and Lois after the death of Lilamani's mother. Lavender had been due to spend the holidays with the Marilliars, but changed her plans to keep her best friend company.
8. At the beginning of "Gay from China at the Chalet School", who says good bye to her Auntie before catching the train to school?

Answer: Jacynth Hardy.

Jacynth's aunt is to go into hospital for a major operation. Jacynth is taken by the doctor's wife to the station at Newcastle, where she meets Gay on the train.

Gill was Gay's best friend at school, with the arrival of Jacynth they become a threesome.
Lavender's aunt was called up at the beginning of the previous term.
9. "The Chalet School and the Island" sees another move for the school in the Easter holidays. Which island do they move to?

Answer: St. Briavel's.

There is something wrong with the drains at Plas Howell, making all the girls ill. The school is offered the chance to rent the Big House on St. Briavel's Island, which is described as being off the west or south coast of Wales.

Vendell is another island in the same group, and home to a bird sanctuary.
Guernsey is where the school moved to when it left Austria.
Caldey Island, near Tenby, is thought by some people to be the inspiration for St. Briavel's.
10. In "Carola Storms the Chalet School", Peggy and Bride talk about how they will miss being at home for Easter. Why?

Answer: Easter is very early, and the school holidays won't begin till April.

Peggy and Bride have to content themselves with spending a long weekend at home for half-term. They are slightly consoled by the thought that it will be eight years before Easter is in March again.

Dick and Mollie Bettany had lived in India for many years, but had been able to return to England after the war. Peggy and Bride had lived with their aunt and uncle while their parents were away. If their brothers had had the measles, or any other infectious illness, the girls certainly wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near, for fear of passing the infection on.
11. Who has mixed feelings when told at the beginning of the Easter holidays that she has won a scholarship to the Chalet School?

Answer: Rosamund Lilley.

In "A Problem for the Chalet School" Rosamund Lilley is awarded a scholarship by Canon and Mrs. Gay. Her parents are very pleased, because she will be able to get a better education. Rosamund is worried about going so far away, and whether the girls will want to be friends with someone like her.

Joan Baker is jealous of Rosamund's scholarship, and, when her father gets a big win on the pools, persuades him to let her go to the same school as Rosamund.
Nearly five years later, Adrienne Desmoines is also awarded a scholarship, but she is told about it just before Christmas.
12. Which innovation heralds the start of the Easter holidays at the end of "Excitements for the Chalet School"?

Answer: Spot Supper.

Spot Supper was suggested by Kathie Ferrars who had been a new mistress at the school the previous term. The idea was received with acclaim by her colleagues.

The Sale of Work began in the early days of the school in the Tyrol. It was held at the end of the spring turn to raise money for the Sanatorium. It was decided in "Excitements for the Chalet School" to hold it in the summer in future to take advantage of the better weather.
The Pantomime was produced by the girls of St. Mildred's - the finishing branch. It was usually held in the middle of the spring term.
The school sometimes held carol concerts at the end of the autumn term instead of a nativity play. There are also other instances of musical entertainments.
13. At the end of "Trials for the Chalet School", Naomi is involved in a motor cycle accident. How do the girls get details of her progress during the following holidays?

Answer: By reading the Personal column of the Times newspaper.

When she tells the school the latest news at the end of term, Joey is startled to receive a collection of money from the prefects for newspaper advertisements. They have realised that it would be impossible to write to everyone, and international telephone calls would have been very difficult and expensive then.
Naomi isn't dead - it is hoped that her previous lameness will be cured by the operation needed as a result of the accident.
14. Whose daughter does Joey meet in Oxford Street while she is in London during the Easter holidays at the beginning of "Summer Term at the Chalet School"?

Answer: Dacia Parsons.

Joey had met Dacia when she went to stay with her brother in Coorg in India shortly after she left school. Although they had lost touch with each other, Dacia had named Joey as guardian to her daughter, Erica Standish.

Maisie Gomme had been a pupil at St. Scholastika's School in the Tyrol. She, too, had lost contact with Joey, but had named her daughter after her. Jo Scott began her Chalet School career in "A Chalet Girl from Kenya".
Gypsy Carson was also a pupil at St. Scholastika's. She and Joey kept in touch over the years, but Gypsy, apparently, never had a daughter to send to the school.
Winnie Silksworth was another of St. Scholastika's pupils. She met the school again, when they were on a boat on Lake Geneva. She had had seven boys, so hadn't bothered to get back in touch with the school.
15. In the last year written about by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer, which new pupil does Len Maynard escort from Paris to the Gornetz Platz at the end of the Easter holidays?

Answer: Althea Glenyon.

Len had been staying near Paris with her Aunt Simone, so she is able to meet Althea and her governess at the Gare de l'Est. Althea's parents will be away for a year, so Althea will make her home with the Maynards during that time.

Jack Lambert starts the school in January in "A Leader in the Chalet School".
Jane Carew's first term is just over a year later in the summer term.
Flavia Ansell, known as "Copper" because of her red hair, starts at the school in the term after Jane. Her stepfather takes her by train to Besancon, where Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars meet her, and drive her the rest of the way to school.
