Question 2 of 10
2. In the books, Peeves the Poltergeist is a fairly important character whose actions often motivate plot twists. In the movies, he never appears, but is mentioned once, in a throwaway line in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone". Which of the following is the movie line? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. We all know Hermione is a gifted witch and a veritable encyclopedia of information, but the movie-makers credit her with several actions and lines done/said by others in the books. Which of the following IS actually done/said by Hermione in one of the books? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Another thing Hermione gets credited with in the movie "Sorcerer's Stone" is discovering the identity of Nicolas Flamel. Who makes this discovery in the book, and what are the circumstances? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. In the first movie ("Sorcerer's Stone"), Professor McGonagall is shown asking Professor Quirrell if she might "borrow Wood" (the Gryffindor Quidditch captain). Which professor is she borrowing the student from in the book? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. While innumerable details and plot twists are necessarily left out of the movies, several details and events are added. Which of the following movie events actually DID happen in one of the books? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The fourth movie ("Goblet of Fire") glosses over the circumstances of Barty Crouch (the younger) not being in prison. Dumbledore says that Azkaban ought to check the cell to find that they have a prisoner missing, which doesn't make sense after the third movie ("Azkaban") shows the diligence of the "prison guards". How did evil Barty escape prison? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The maze in the Triwizard Tournament is portrayed very differently in the movie ("Goblet of Fire"). Which of the following is in the movie-version maze but not in the book-version? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The fifth movie ("Order of the Phoenix") shows Harry spurning Cho because she apparently helps Umbridge find the meeting place for Dumbledore's Army, yet he fails to forgive her when he learns that she was given Veritaserum (truth potion). None of this happens in the book. Why do Harry and Cho break up in the book? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. I'll end with a small detail: In the fifth book ("Order of the Phoenix"), who shows Harry a photograph of the original Order, where, and why? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The innumerable details in the books could not possibly have all made it into the movies. In fact, several characters never appear at all. However, one character in (at least one of) the movies doesn't exist in the books. Which one?

Answer: Nigel

He seems to be a replacement for the Creevey brothers (Colin & Dennis), although I don't know why. Peeves is the bane of Filch's existence, Binns is the only ghost professor (History), and Winky is Barty Crouch's house-elf - to begin with, at least.

Answer: "Probably just Peeves playing jokes."

This is in the first movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone", when Ron is speculating as to how the troll might have gotten into the castle. This is more-or-less a quote from the book, as are the rest. The line about Peeves showing respect for teachers is in reference to the way he treats Lupin.
3. We all know Hermione is a gifted witch and a veritable encyclopedia of information, but the movie-makers credit her with several actions and lines done/said by others in the books. Which of the following IS actually done/said by Hermione in one of the books?

Answer: attempts unsuccessfully to use "Alohomora" to open a door in Sorcerer's Stone

In fact, Ron is the one shown doing this in the movie ("Sorcerer's Stone"), leaving the watcher to wonder if Hermione might have succeeded where he failed. Mr. Weasley repairs Harry's glasses (but not until "Chamber of Secrets"), Dobby explains about the Room of Requirement ("Order of the Phoenix"), and Dumbledore, naturally, says that lovely quote about fear of a name ("Sorcerer's Stone").
4. Another thing Hermione gets credited with in the movie "Sorcerer's Stone" is discovering the identity of Nicolas Flamel. Who makes this discovery in the book, and what are the circumstances?

Answer: Harry, reads about him on the back of a chocolate frog card

Harry thought all along that he'd read the name somewhere, but couldn't remember just where - until Neville handed him a Dumbledore chocolate frog card, identical to the first Harry had ever seen.
5. In the first movie ("Sorcerer's Stone"), Professor McGonagall is shown asking Professor Quirrell if she might "borrow Wood" (the Gryffindor Quidditch captain). Which professor is she borrowing the student from in the book?

Answer: Flitwick

Apparently Quirrell needed the extra airtime, as he's such a vital part of this story and movies have so little time to make characters important to the audience. In the book, Harry wondered if "Wood" was a cane that McGonagall was going to use on him.
6. While innumerable details and plot twists are necessarily left out of the movies, several details and events are added. Which of the following movie events actually DID happen in one of the books?

Answer: "Goblet of Fire", the Weasley twins sprout beards after using an aging potion to "fool" the age line

I like playing a game called "Why did they change that?" In "Chamber of Secrets", the flight to Hogwarts always did seem surprisingly uneventful to me. In "Sorcerer's Stone", this is a great laugh - Rowling surely would have put this in if she'd thought of it (as script consultant, maybe she did!). In "Half-Blood Prince", there is no earthly reason I can think of for adding this.

Answer: His father broke him out by replacing him with his ailing wife.

He did indeed! On a side note, neither the Crouches nor the Riddles use the junior/senior appellation. This often happens when father and son have different middle names (remember, "Marvolo" is Voldemort's maternal grandfather). It's a little thing, but important in explaining why the name "Barty Crouch" appears on the Marauder's Map that year - "junior" might have given it away.
8. The maze in the Triwizard Tournament is portrayed very differently in the movie ("Goblet of Fire"). Which of the following is in the movie-version maze but not in the book-version?

Answer: a spell that bewitches players

In the book, we later discover that Krum was imperiused by Barty Crouch (as Mad-Eye Moody) to attack other players as a way of ensuring that Harry reaches the cup first - in the movie, he's bewitched by a spell within the maze.

Answer: They have a disastrous date showing how little they have in common, and later Cho defends her friend who was the one who ratted out the DA (sans Veritaserum).

Cho also becomes insanely jealous of Hermione (not Ginny). Harry does get sick of hearing her talk about Cedric, but not enough to do anything about it. Seeing Ginny and Dean in the corridor comes later, in "Half-Blood Prince".
10. I'll end with a small detail: In the fifth book ("Order of the Phoenix"), who shows Harry a photograph of the original Order, where, and why?

Answer: Mad-Eye Moody, Grimmauld Place, in a misguided attempt to cheer him up

Again, movies have limited time to establish characters. The relationship between Harry and Sirius is especially important in this book/movie, so this vignette is portrayed as a warm bonding moment between godson and father-figure.
