Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The aim of the game is to score more points than your opponent; however, which of these methods of scoring in rugby union is worth the most points?

Answer: A try

A try on its own is worth five points, which in the game of rugby union is a lot! After a try, the successful team will also get a conversion which is basically an attempt by the kicker to kick the ball over the posts. If the kicker manages to get the ball over the posts, the team picks up an extra two points.
2. There are many rules and regulations in the sport of rugby union. Which of the following results after an accidental 'knock on' that the opposing team do not receive any advantage from?

Answer: Scrum

A scrum is a show of strength as the two teams push as hard as they can against each other to win the ball which is put into the formation by a player known as the scrum half. Each team puts forward eight players into the scrum.
3. In rugby union, when the referee forms a right angle with their arm which of the following has been awarded?

Answer: Free Kick

A free kick is a small break in the game where the team who gave away the free kick have to move back ten metres. A player from the team who have been awarded the free kick will tap the ball onto their foot and the game resumes.
4. Different sports have different shaped balls: what is the shape of the ball used in rugby union?

Answer: Oval like an American football

The shape of the ball means it has an awkward and unpredictable bounce. When a player kicks the ball to gain distance they are always taking a risk. If the ball bounces too far they may lose a lot of distance but if the ball doesn't go far enough, the opposing team may catch it and be in a strong position to score.
5. Different sports are played on different types of surfaces. With this in mind, what surface is rugby union officially played on?

Answer: Grass

This winter sport is played on grass, though at the end of a game you'll be lucky if there is any grass left in sight! The grass is painted with white lines which include the touch lines and the try lines. I can imagine that playing rugby union on concrete or ice would be more than a little painful!
6. A game of soccer is played over ninety minutes and American football is played for sixty minutes (though they manage to take hours over it!). Officially, how many minutes is a game of professional rugby union played over?

Answer: Eighty minutes

The eighty minutes is split up into two halves of forty minutes with a short half-time break in between. Rugby union used to have long periods of play known as extra time, however, the rules changed so that the clock stops for injuries instead of being left to tick away. Previously, when the clock was left on, the time wasted was added at the end of the game's normal time.
7. One of the most famous and successful international rugby union teams are known as the 'All Blacks'. What country has this nickname?

Answer: New Zealand

The New Zealand All Blacks wear a kit that is just that...all black! At the start of international test matches the team can be seen performing the haka, a dance from the native Maori culture.
8. Every year the Six Nations rugby union competition is held and six teams from Europe compete for continental domination. The six teams are England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Italy and which other nation?

Answer: France

The competition was originally known as the Five Nations Championship until Italy joined the all European rugby union tournament in 2000. In 2005, Wales completed the Grand Slam by beating all other teams in the competition. They would repeat this achievement in 2008. In between the Welsh Grand Slams, France were victorious in the 2006 and 2007 competitions.
9. The teams in rugby union are split up into categories such as forwards and backs, but, how many players are on the field for each team at the start of each game?

Answer: 15

There are eight forwards that make up the scrum and seven backs which include the scrum half, the key player that recycles the ball from the forwards to the backs. The forwards are generally of a larger build which provide them with physical strength. The backs are generally of a slimmer build and can inject pace into the game.
10. In rugby union there are two coloured cards that the referee can give to any player on the pitch and they are yellow and red. Where is the player said to be sent when they are given their first yellow card?

Answer: Sin-bin

The sin-bin is a place on the sideline where the player is forced to remain for ten minutes to think about what they've done! The team will have to make do with one less player for that period of time. When the player returns to the field they must play fairly or they may get a second yellow card and therefore a red card. If someone receives this they are sent off for the rest of the game.
