Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This cute, grey creature is common across parts of the US and Canada, as well as being widespread across Britain. What type of animal is it?

Answer: Squirrel

In Britain, the grey squirrel is thought of as a pest, as it has taken over much of the habitat of the red squirrel, which is native to the country. Some species of red squirrel can have grey fur during the colder months and can therefore be mistaken for actual grey squirrels.
2. Do you recognise this grey animal? It's one of Australia's faunal (animal) icons. What is it?

Answer: Koala

The koala is a special type of creature called a marsupial. This means they have a pouch in which they can carry around their babies. Other marsupials include the kangaroo and the wombat. Koalas live mostly on the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, but as this doesn't provide them with very much nutrition, they have to be eating it for most of the day.
3. The grey wolf is a beautiful creature and the largest of the canines, but in which of these places won't you find the grey wolf in the wild?

Answer: Antarctica

Despite the fact that you could find the grey wolf in the cold climates of northern Canada, Alaska and Siberia, Antarctica is just that little bit too cold for them. Once upon a time, the grey wolf was more widespread, covering much of Europe and Asia, but the wolf's somewhat dangerous reputation as an "apex predator" has meant that humans have had a hand in reducing their population and habitat range.
4. Dolphins are amongst the smartest animals on the planet, but what type of creature are they?

Answer: Mammal

Dolphins are warm-blooded and give birth to live young, meaning they are mammals, just like their porpoise and whale cousins. Dolphins are generally known to be peaceful towards humans and their intelligence means that it's quite easy for them to be taught to do things like perform tricks or rescue swimmers, though these are mainly done by dolphins kept in captivity (like at a marine park such as Sea World).
5. Elephants are some of the biggest land-dwelling animals. Sadly, they are often hunted for their tusks, which are made of which material?

Answer: Ivory

There are two main varieties of elephant: the Asian and the African elephant. African elephants tend to be the bigger of the two species, particularly males. The elephant's large ears, long trunk and tusks are their stand-out features. The ears act as a sort of cooling system, while the trunk is used to smell and pick up objects, such as food to eat. Ivory hunting used to be a big problem in past years and although this barbaric practice does still happen in some parts of the world, many countries have outlawed it and hunters can face severe punishments.
6. This is quite obviously a cat, but its colour isn't referred to as "grey", even though it looks like it. What colour would this cat be called?

Answer: Blue

Although they do look grey, some cats can have tinges of blue in their fur, meaning they are referred to as being blue. This happens because of changes in the cat's genetics. Most often, the cat has a dark coat which gets "diluted" to a grey/blue colour. The pictured cat is a Russian Blue, the most recognisable blue cat breed.
7. This might look like a horse, but don't be fooled! It is related to the horse, but what is it actually?

Answer: Donkey

Donkeys are generally docile and friendly and have been used by humans for many, many years for work, transportation and domestication. Wild donkeys can also be found in parts of Africa and Asia, like the onager and the kiang. Cleopatra, the ancient Egyptian queen, is said to have bathed in ass's (donkey's) milk, and in the Bible, Mary travelled with Joseph to Bethlehem on a donkey.
8. What bovine-sounding name would you call the male grey seal?

Answer: Bull

Grey seals are primarily found in the Northern hemisphere, particularly around the UK and the east coast of North America. They tend to eat fish and eels, and their relative lack of hunting by humans has meant that their population has thrived since various conservation laws were passed in the twentieth century.
9. Hippopotamuses are massive creatures that live in parts of southern Africa. For the most part, the hippo eats grass and plants, meaning it is what type of creature?

Answer: Herbivore

Hippos have quite a fearsome reputation and can be very aggressive when they think they are in danger. Although it doesn't eat meat, a hippo will have no problem chomping a potential threat with its massive and powerful jaws. The hippopotamus's name comes from the Greek for "river horse", which refers to the fact that they spend most of their time in the water.
10. Around which of these countries would the sand tiger shark be called the grey nurse shark instead?

Answer: Australia

Grey nurse sharks tend to be thought of as dangerous, "man-eating" creatures because of their sharp teeth, menacing appearance and close relation to the more feared great white shark. However, it has been proven that grey nurses are generally docile unless provoked, like many other animals.

The grey nurse's alternative name, the sand tiger shark, does lead to it being confused with the tiger shark, but they aren't related.
