Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in the city of Paris. Paris is the capital of France and it's home to a number of famous sites. If you visit you can see the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. You'd better brush up on some French; that's what they speak there!
2. Sweden
One of the nations of Scandinavia, Sweden is one of the countries that's furthest north in Europe. If you visit, you might visit the cities of Stockholm, Malmo, or Gothenburg. Make sure to plan your trip carefully! If you go in the winter, Sweden is very cold and snowy, so much so that they build hotels out of ice!
3. The Colosseum
The Colosseum is one of the major landmarks in the city of Rome, Italy, and thousands of years ago, fierce gladiators used to to battle inside while massive crowds watched. Rome is the capital city of Italy, and if you visit you'd be able to see Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the teeny-tiny city-state of Vatican City. Oh yeah, and you can grab some pizza and pasta for lunch!
4. Portugal
The westernmost country on continental Europe, Portugal is bordered by only one other nation-- Spain-- and sits on the Atlantic Ocean. A warm and sunny country, visitors can enjoy the colourful capital of Lisbon eat some fresh seafood, or play a game of European football. Like the beach? Then you'll love the sunny coast here!
5. Germany
One of the biggest countries in Western Europe, Germany has a lot of big cities to visit-- Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, and Hamburg to name a few-- and all of them have landmarks that you're sure to know. So many parts of Germany are different from one another.
Not only does it reach the North Sea (and the Baltic Sea), but in the south you could visit the dense, forested mountains of the German Alps.
6. London
The capital city of the United Kingdom, London is the city where you'd visit Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and (of course) London Bridge. London has, consistently, been one of the most important cities in the world for history; it was from here that the British Empire expanded. Today, it's a sprawling city cut through by the River Thames and one of the most-visited European destinations.
7. Athens
The capital city of Greece, Athens is the perfect place to visit for a history buff since many of its landmarks (like the Parthenon and the Acropolis) are millennia old. In modern times, it's a big city that sits on the Aegean Sea and experiences warm (or sometimes hot) weather for most of the year. Coming here means visiting one of the world's oldest cities!
8. Red Square
One of the central locations of the massive Russian capital city of Moscow, the Red Square is surrounded by landmarks. Here, you could see the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, one of the most distinctive buildings in the country. Though Russia can be regarded as both a European and Asian country, if it were considered strictly European it would be the most populated capital on the continent.
9. Austria
The mountainous country of Austria is known for sitting in the Alps, its royal palaces, and its classical music. To the west you can visit quaint cities, castles, and ski hills while to the east you can find the city of Vienna, its capital, with all of its museums, theatres, and royal structures. Austria is completely landlocked, meaning it's not on any major coastline.
Not the place to go for a beach vacation!
10. Istanbul
Istanbul is a unique city since it sits on the border between Europe and Asia. On one side of the Bosporus River, you can be in European Turkey; on the other you can be in Asian Turkey. All you need to do is take a car or a boat from one side to the other. Istanbul is a massive city and one of the biggest on the continent(s).
Its massive markets and religious structures are amongst the most visited anywhere in the world.
