Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After Harry 'blew up' Aunt Marge, he took the Knight Bus to the Leaky Cauldron where he was met by Cornelius Fudge. Although timing was never clearly discussed, the impression was given that Ron and Hermione arrived the very next day. This is what happened in the movie. What was different in the book?

Answer: Harry spent several days at the Leaky Cauldron before his friends arrived

After Harry replenished his money supply from Gringotts, he spent his time buying his school supplies, and exploring Diagon Alley. It was at this time that he first became familiar with the Firebolt, the broom that Sirius would later send him. In the movie, Harry's school supplies are purchased for him, and he is not shown spending any time outside of the Leaky Cauldron at all.
2. In the movie, Harry, Ron and Hermione are the best of friends - the way they have been ever since their encounter with the troll in the first book. Is this also true in the book version of 'The Prisoner of Azkaban'?

Answer: No

In the book, Ron and Hermione are constantly fighting about Hermione's new cat, Crookshanks, and his tendency to attack Ron's rat, Scabbers. Harry becomes very angry with Hermione when she tells Professor McGonagall about the Firebolt that Harry receives from an unknown source. It isn't until Buckbeak is sentenced to death that the friends forget their fighting and become friends again.
3. In the book Harry receives a Firebolt and has absolutely no idea who sent it to him (although he does find out by the end of the book). In the movie the Firebolt is sent by the same person, but Harry knows who sent it when it arrives. Who did send it to Harry?

Answer: Sirius

While Sirius can't enclose a card with the broom, because he is still in hiding, he does send one of Buckbeak's feathers. This not only serves to tell Harry who gave him the broom, but it also lets him know that Sirius and Buckbeak got away safely.
4. In the movie, when Ron, Harry and Hermione visit the Shrieking Shack, Harry is concealed by his Invisibility Cloak. Malfoy and friends come along, and Harry pelts them with snowballs, causing them to run away. What happens differently in the book?

Answer: The cloak slid off Harry's face and he was seen by Malfoy.

Malfoy saw Harry's face and went running back to Hogwarts to report Harry, because Harry didn't have permission to be there. Harry barely had time to squeeze back through the tunnel before being confronted by Snape. In the book, Hermione isn't even with them at this time, because they were fighting.
5. In the Three Broomsticks, Harry overhears the conversation about how Sirius Black betrayed his parents from underneath a table while Ron and Hermione try to hide him from discovery. Did this version occur in the book or in the movie?

Answer: book

In the movie, Harry hears something said outside the Three Broomsticks, which makes him go inside to hear the rest of the story. He only manages to get in because he is concealed by his Invisibility Cloak. Ron and Hermione are refused entrance, being told that no students were welcome that day.
6. In the movie Hagrid brought only one Hippogriff to his first 'Care of Magical Creatures' class. Was this the same as in the book?

Answer: No

In the book, Hagrid brought 12 Hippogriffs, including Buckbeak, to class. Another difference between the book and the movie is that in the movie Harry appeared to volunteer because everyone else stepped back, making it look as if had stepped forward. In the book Harry really does volunteer, albeit reluctantly, in order to help Hagrid out.
7. In the movie, Harry's books were purchased for him and waiting at the Leaky Cauldron. Who gave him the 'Monster Book of Monsters' in the book?

Answer: Hagrid

Hagrid sent the book to Harry as a birthday gift, before Harry even arrived at The Leaky Cauldron. Harry had no idea when he received it that Hagrid was going to be his new 'Care of Magical Creatures' teacher.
8. Harry is examining the Marauder's Map when he sees Peter Pettigrew wandering the halls of Hogwarts. But how can this be? Peter was killed by Sirius Black. Harry gets out of bed to investigate and bumps into Snape. Snape makes him empty his pockets, thereby getting his hands on the Marauder's Map. Is this the series of events from the movie or the book?

Answer: movie

In the book, Snape confronts Harry after Malfoy spotted him at the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade, just after Harry had snuck back in through the tunnel. Snape made Harry turn out his pockets, thus finding the Marauder's Map.
9. In the movie, the secret to immobilizing the Whomping Willow is to cast an immobilizing spell on it. Not knowing this, Harry and Hermione get bashed around a fair bit before they manage to follow Ron (who was being dragged by Sirius) through the secret passageway. How did they get past the Whomping Willow in the book?

Answer: Crookshanks touched a special knot with his paws and the tree froze

In both the movie and the book Ron had been dragged into the passageway by Sirius, in dog form. What no one yet realized was that Sirius was really after Scabbers, who turned out to be the long-thought-dead Peter Pettigrew.
10. How did Lupin and Sirius restrain Peter Pettigrew in the movie?

Answer: They used their own hands

This is part of the movie that struck me as just plain silly - here are these two powerful wizards scuffling around in a very physical, almost slapstick way with a third wizard. In the book they first bound Peter with thin cord that was conjured out of Lupin's wand, and then they chained Pettigrew between Ron and Lupin, with manacles that Sirius conjured.
