Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Ron send Harry for a birthday gift?

Answer: a pocket sneakoscope

The Sneakoscope was supposed to light up and spin whenever there was someone untrustworthy around. This was a curiously undeveloped part of the book, because it did just that every time it was in the same vicinity as Scabbers, but that connection was never made by any of the characters. The Broomstick Servicing Kit came from Hermione, and the book from Hagrid.
2. What was Harry doing at the Leaky Cauldron when he overheard Mr. and Mrs. Weasley talking about Sirius Black?

Answer: retrieving Scabbers' Rat Tonic from the bar

Before overhearing this conversation Harry had heard about Black's escape from Azkaban, but had no idea about who he was or that everyone believed that Black was coming after him.
3. What are Mr. and Mrs. Weasley's first names?

Answer: Arthur and Molly

They call each other by name when arguing in the Leaky Cauldron, although I'm sure there are other places throughout the books where their first names are used. Cornelius Fudge is the Minister of Magic, Poppy Pomfrey is the witch in charge of the hospital at Hogwarts, Remus Lupin is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Minerva McGonagall is the Transfiguration teacher, Albus Dumbledore is Headmaster and Petunia is Harry's Muggle aunt.
4. Professor Lupin did not give Harry a chance to face down the Boggart in the wardrobe because he assumed that it would take the form of a Dementor and frighten all the other students.

Answer: False

Lupin did not give Harry a chance because he assumed that the Boggart would take the form of Lord Voldemort and would terrify the other students. Lupin was quite surprised, and pleased, to learn otherwise. When he found that Harry's Boggart would take the form of a Dementor, he applauded Harry for being most afraid of fear itself.
5. Who else did not get a chance at handling the Boggart?

Answer: Hermione

We're never told why Hermione is not given a turn, but later, when she has to face a Boggart for her end of the year exam, she proves incapable of dealing with a vision of Professor McGonagall informing her that she'd failed everything. The Boggart turns into a giant spider when it faces Ron, and Neville's greatest fear turns out to be Professor Snape.
6. What happened to Harry's Nimbus 2000 broom?

Answer: It crashed into the Whomping Willow and was destroyed.

When the Dementors (about 100 of them) descended upon the Quidditch match, Harry once again heard his mother's voice, as she died trying to protect him, and passed out. Riderless, his broom was blown by the storm into the Whomping Willow and only a few splinters of wood were recovered.
7. Harry was hiding, under a table in the Three Broomsticks when he overheard Professors McGonagall and Flitwick, Cornelius Fudge (Minister for Magic), Hagrid, and Rosmerta (owner of the Three Broomsticks) discuss the crimes that had Black sent to Azkaban.

Answer: True

This was a very well written and powerful scene, which might have been more so had Rowling not already used this technique (in the Leaky Cauldron) as a means for Harry to learn about his parents' past.
8. How did Black get the password that gained him entrance into Gryffindor in the middle of the night?

Answer: Crookshanks took a list from Neville's bedside table

Because Sir Cadogan, who was filling in as the portrait hole guard, changed the password so often, forgetful Neville had made a list of all the week's passwords. Crookshanks (Hermione's cat) stole the list for Black.
9. Who ends up in possession of the Maurauder's Map after Harry is seen in Hogsmeade by Malfoy and questioned by Snape? Be careful - this question is not as obvious as it first seems.

Answer: Professor Lupin

Snape finds the Marauder's Map, but cannot figure out what it is. He does manage to get it to respond with a few rude remarks from 'Padfoot, Moony, Prongs and Wormtail' which prompts him to summon Lupin. Seeing how Lupin turns out to be Moony, he, of course, recognizes it, and manages to confiscate it from both Snape and Harry.
10. It was the Marauder's Map that convinced Lupin that Sirius Black is indeed innocent of the charges that sent him to Azkaban.

Answer: True

Because the map marks the names of people wandering around Hogwarts, Lupin sees that Pettigrew, who Black has been sent to jail for murdering, is one of these dots (being carried around in Ron's pocket). This makes Lupin more receptive to listening to Black's version of what happened on the night that the Potters were killed, and convinces Lupin that Black did not betray the Potters as had always been believed.
11. What event finally ended the fight between Ron & Harry, and Hermione?

Answer: The news that Buckbeak had lost his case

Hermione did many things during the course of the year that really angered Harry, and especially Ron. She told McGonagall about Harry's receiving a new broomstick from an unidentified source, her cat Crookshanks appeared to have killed Scabbers, and she threatened to report Harry if he used the tunnel to go to Hogsmeade again, to name a few.

Although her actions might have been aggravating, her intentions were always beyond reproach. The loss of Buckbeak's appeal, his pending execution, and the impact that would have on Hagrid was enough to cause them to bury their differences.
12. Did Gryffindor finally win the Quidditch Cup?

Answer: Yes

The victory was after a particularly rough game against Slytherin. Since it was Malfoy's behaviour that had led to Buckbeak's impending execution, the victory was a particularly sweet one for Harry. Gryffindor Team Captain Wood, who was in his last year at Hogwarts, was reduced to tears.
13. Did Professor Trelawney finally make an accurate prediction?

Answer: Yes

When Harry was having his final Divination exam, Professor Trelawney fell into a trance and foretold the return of Pettigrew to Lord Voldemort, and Voldemort's return to power with his servant's help. This caused Harry a great deal of angst as he felt responsible for Pettigrew's escape since he had stopped Black and Lupin from killing Pettigrew.
14. Whom did the Dementor try to 'kiss' after failing to kiss Sirius?

Answer: Harry

With a very clever plot twist, Rowling has Harry (visiting from the future) cast the charm that chased the Dementor away and saved Harry from the Dementor's 'kiss'. So his journey into the past with Hermione's Time-Turner saved a lot more than Black and Buckbeak.
15. Whose idea was it to use the Time-Turner to go back to rescue both Black and Buckbeak?

Answer: Dumbledore

Dumbledore believed Harry & Hermione's version of events, but with Pettigrew having escaped, no one else would. It was Dumbledore who told them how many times to turn the Time-Turner, and where to find Black. He even suggested that they use Buckbeak to complete the rescue.
