Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The American colonists paid taxes to England but were not allowed to elect Members of Parliament.

Answer: True

One of the major reasons the US revolution occurred was that America had to pay taxes to Britain but couldn't elect any members to speak for them in Parliament ("Taxation Without Representation").
2. Who was king of Britain at the time of the US revolution?

Answer: George III

George III was the king at the time the US Revolution happened. He suffered from porphyria, a disease that affected his mind, so the English colonies weren't a big priority for the country at the time. They were more concerned about the king's mental health.
3. The _________ colonists expressed their desire to stop being __________ colonies in the Declaration of Independence.

Answer: American; British

The Declaration was written by the Americans to the English nobles to express their desire to stop being colonies. Nevertheless, Britain totally ignored the document along with every other complaint they had.
4. The Boston Tea Party showed that the colonists were angry about _______ on their favorite hot drink.

Answer: taxes

The Boston Tea Party was a rebellion by the Americans against the extremely high taxes the English put on their tea. The Americans confiscated a ship loaded with tea and threw everything into the sea as a protest.
5. Louis XVI helped the American colonists against Britain because he wanted his people to follow the example of the Americans, which eventually happened.

Answer: False

Louis XVI didn't want his people to follow the example of the colonists when he helped America defeat Britain, which eventually happened. He helped them because England became his enemy when they took Canada from him and he saw that there was a possibility of the colonists winning.
6. Which of these was NOT a reason that the French people were angry with Louis XVI?

Answer: He tried to change their religion

The French people were the most angry at Louis XVI because of the high taxes that they alone had to pay. (The nobles were tax-free). Too much was spent on the whims his wife Marie Antoinette and for personal luxuries for the palace.
7. Which of these was NOT an idea that inspired the French revolution?

Answer: Absolutism is the best type of government

The ideas that inspired the French revolution were that everyone should be treated the same, all the people should be free to choose their rulers and that if they don't like them, they may remove them. The period of time in which these ideas were launched the most was called "The Enlightenment".
8. Which of these did NOT happen when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette tried to escape from France?

Answer: They arrived in England but were sent back

When the king and his wife found out the French people were trying to start a Revolution and they were the first ones that were going out, they tried to escape. Unfortunately, they didn't know that a good and efficient escape was made without taking servants, money, jewels and dresses with you.

They caught people's attention at a restaurant with a gold louis (a coin) and were sent back to Paris.
9. This was the document that Britain signed after the US revolution that recognized the colonies' independence.

Answer: Treaty of Paris

After a series of defeats at the hands of the Americans colonists, England signed a document with the name of "Treaty of Paris" that recognized the independence of all of the colonies that were asking for it.
10. Which of these is NOT true about the Reign of Terror in France?

Answer: It was directed by Marat

The Reign of Terror is the period of time in which the people "ruled" themselves and everyone that was against the new type of government was sent to the guillotine and had his/her head cut off. Robespierre started it and when the people started to get tired of the unnecessary killing, they sent him to the guillotine (after a failed suicide attempt) and ended this dark period in France's history.
