Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the child foretold in this passage that is found in the book of Judges, in the NSRV? "And the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, 'Although you are barren, having borne no children, you shall conceive and bear a son'."

Answer: Samson

This is one of the great enigmas of the Bible. Samson had been chosen by God before his birth to be used by God, yet he lived a life that was focused more or less on his own fleshly desires.

(Judges 13:2-7)

2. The Lord said to Samuel, "How long will you be filled with sorrow because of Saul? I have refused to have him as king over Israel. Fill your animal horn with olive oil and go on your way. I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king." 1 Samuel 16:1 (NIRV). What was the name of this son of Jesse that God had chosen to be the king of Israel after Saul?

Answer: David

David had seven older brothers. Even though David was the youngest son, he was the one chosen by God. When Samuel came to their house David was out tending the sheep. David was probably around 12-15 years old at this time but didn't become king until he was 30. When Samuel saw David's oldest brother, Eliab, he was sure that he was the one the Lord meant him to choose.
But 1 Samuel 16:7 says 'But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen him. I do not look at the things people look at. Man looks at how someone appears on the outside. But I look at what is in the heart."' (NIRV)

3. The Pharaoh of Egypt had said that any Hebrew boy born should be put to death. When Moses was born, his mother was able to keep him safe for some time before she decided that she had to do something. "And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink". Exodus 2:3 KJV. Who found Moses floating in the river?

Answer: the daughter of the Pharaoh

The princess (a daughter of the Pharaoh), had Moses drawn out of the water. Moses' sister who was nearby offered to find a nurse for the baby and took the baby, who was now under the princess' protection, to Moses' own mother. When Moses was old enough, he went to live at the palace with the princess. She named him Moses which means "to draw" because she drew him out of the water.
This story can be found in Exodus 2:1-10, in the King James Version. "And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bear a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side: and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son."

We also see a reference to this in the New Testament book of Acts. In Acts 7:21 - "And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water".

4. Solomon was only twelve years old when he was chosen to be the next king of Israel after David's reign! God spoke to him and offered a gift to him of Solomon's own choosing. How did God speak to Solomon?

Answer: In a dream

I Kings, Chapter 3 tells us the story of Solomon's dream and of his request; wisdom to guide the people and the desire to be a fair and righteous king. God was pleased with Solomon's unselfishness because he didn't ask for great riches or worldly things and granted him not only what he asked, but also promised him a long life and wealth and honor.
I Kings 3:13 (NRSV) "I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you."

Solomon was the son of David and Bathsheba and grew up to be one of the wisest men in history. He wrote the books of Proverbs, Song of Songs, and (according to many scholars) Ecclesiastes and the Deuterocanonical Book of Wisdom.

5. Who did Samuel think was calling him when he heard a voice saying, "Samuel, Samuel", in the book of I Samuel?

Answer: Eli

Eli was Samuel's guardian but he was not the one calling Samuel. Samuel didn't realize the Lord was calling him but Eli did, and he told him to respond with "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening" (I Samuel 3:9).

6. Moses's birth parents had two other children. What were their names?

Answer: Miriam and Aaron

I Chronicles, Chapter 6 tells us that Amram had three children, Moses, Aaron and Miriam. Even though Moses was adopted by the Pharaoh's daughter, his older brother and sister never forgot him. After Moses grew up, God chose him to lead the Israelites away from their cruel Egyptian masters, and Aaron accompanied his brother to the palace to try and convince the Pharaoh to release the slaves.

Miriam, of course, protected her baby brother by watching over his hiding place until she knew he was safe. As an adult, she helped her brother lead their people to safety.

God mentions all three siblings later when he reminds the people of Israel of his mercy in removing them from Egyptian slavery. Micah 6.4 (NRSV): "For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam."

7. Boy, did my brother and I like to fight! Hey, we were fighting before we were even born! We were the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. Just before I was born, what part of my brother's body did I grab hold of, still insistent on getting my own way? (Genesis 25:26)

Answer: his heel

Rebekah, the mother of Esau and Jacob, felt them fighting while she was still carrying them and asked God why this was happening. Genesis 25:23-26 in the King James explains things a bit:

23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and HIS HAND TOOK HOLD ON ESAU'S HEEL; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them."

(King James Version)
Eventually, after we boys were grown we finally made peace, but we sure had some rough times between the time of our births and adulthood!

My name is Ishmael. My dad, Abraham was 86 years old when I was born. Hagar, my mom was Sarai's slave. When Sarai saw that she couldn't have kids she gave my mom, Hagar over to her husband, (my dad) in an early version of surrogate parenting.

9. Jesus was preaching to a large crowd of over 5,000 people. When it was time for them to eat Jesus wanted to feed them. A young boy who was there was big help to Jesus. What did he do?

Answer: He gave Jesus five loaves and two fish.

"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" John 6:9 (New International Version)

"Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten."" John 6:11-19 (NIV)

Wow! Just think, that little boy gave the little bit of food he had to eat but when he gave it to Jesus it was more than enough to feed all those people.

10. I was a boy king, being crowned when I was just seven years old. Most kids would love to spend time with grandma, but I hid from her. When my dad, King Ahaziah died, grandma killed all my brothers. My aunt hid me in the temple of the Lord until I was crowned king. Who was I?

Answer: Joash

Maybe grandma was the product of bad parenting. In 2 Kings 8:16, the Bible recorded who grandpa Joram married. The wicked Athaliah's parents were none other than Ahab and Jezebel. The Bible records her evil deed in 2 Kings 11:1, and Joash being rescued from her grasp in 2 Kings 11:2. (KJV)
