Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sci/Tech: Geology I am a plutonic igneous rock composed of feldspar and quartz. I was formed through the crystallization of magma. What am I?

Answer: Granite

Granite forms a large percentage of mountains and tectonic plates. It is also used for buildings, road curbs and paving. Diamond is a carbon allotrope, and although it has been brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions it is not made of either feldspar or quartz. Graphite is a higher quality of coal. Amethyst is a variety of quartz; it is purple and used in jewelry.
2. People: Quotes "I know not with what weapons WWIII will be fought, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones". To whom do we owe this pessimistic vision?

Answer: Albert Einstein

According to records, Einstein was heard saying that phrase several times. He did not believe WWI was the war "that would end all wars" contrary to what most people believed at that time (and the events that followed proved him right). He was quite worried about the use of nuclear weapons as demonstrated in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

He actually feared an escalation in mass destruction weapons might take us back to the Stone Age. Luckily, the world powers (USA and the Soviet Union) weighed the pros and cons and refrained from using their nuclear arsenal.
3. History: UK History Who was the Queen of England from 1509 until 1533?

Answer: Catherine of Aragon

Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of King Henry VIII. Anne Boleyn became queen in 1533 and was the second wife of Henry VIII. Anne Seymour was born in 1510 and she never reigned. Anne de Cleves, Henry's fourth wife, was briefly queen for six months in 1540 before her marriage was annulled.
4. Sci/Tech: Computers Dell, Sony, HP, Apple, and Asus are all well-known computer brands, but the pioneer in that field is IBM. What does IBM stand for?

Answer: International Business Machines

The full appellation is: International Business Machines Corporation. It was founded in 1911 under the acronym CTRC, which stands for Computing Tabulating Recording Company.
5. Literature Which one is poem by Robert Burns? (Hint: it is also the headgear of several Scottish infantry regiments.)

Answer: Tam O' Shanter

The poem was written in 1790, and portrays a Scottish heavy-drinking farmer named Tam. Tam Elizabeth O'Shaughnessy is an American educator. The other two are fictional.
6. Sci/Tech: Neurological Disorders My nephew has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. How can the doctors cure it?

Answer: There is no definitive cure

This disease is a form of autism. It involves an almost complete lack of social interaction and verbal communication. There is no definitive medication to treat the core symptoms. Anti-psychotics do reduce the symptoms in some cases, but that's about all they do; they don't cure anything. The other options are useless, and a lobotomy is inconceivable.
7. Geography Melbourne is in Australia, right? But there are at least three "Melbournes" in the USA. Two are in Florida and Tennessee. Which of these states does NOT include a Melbourne?

Answer: Oregon

Another Melbourne is a city in Izard County, Arkansas. In 2012, it had a population of a little less than 1900 people.
8. Animals This antelope can be seen in the Arabian Peninsula. It is medium-sized and has a pale coat. What is it called?

Answer: Oryx

The kudu is much bigger and has a dark brown coat, while the impala has a reddish coat. Both are native to Africa. The blackbuck is native to India.
9. Music "The Highwayman" is a beautiful song by Loreena McKennitt, based on a poem by Alfred Noyes. The highwayman's sweetheart is the daughter of the keeper of an old inn. He tells her he will come to her "by the moonlight". He does, and what happens then?

Answer: He falls into an ambush and they both die.

Unfortunately...it ends in tragedy. King George and his redcoats gagged the daughter and bound a musket to her breast, and then waited for the highwayman. She pulled the trigger to warn the highwayman, and died. Upon hearing the shot, the highwayman charged the redcoats, brandishing his sword, but he too was killed in an instant. Check out the lyrics and the original poem.
10. People: Occupational Trivia What does an "executor" do?

Answer: He carries out the terms of someone's will

The "executioner" carries out the death sentence. The "executive" is a man or woman whose task is to "execute" the policy of a company. The "executant" is a performer who plays music.
