Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country did a late loyalist come from?

Answer: USA

This attracted my attention as most people in the past went to the USA. Apparently, it was an emigrant from the United States who went to Upper Canada after 1789, when land was made available to settlers on very advantageous terms.
2. What is a hell-bender?

Answer: Salamander

I'm sure this was a very easy question for all US players. For the rest of us a hell-bender is a dark grey salamander which is native to rivers in eastern and central US.
3. Where does the Jarrah tree grow?

Answer: Australia

This is a hard wood. It is reddish brown in colour and is used in flooring.
4. Can you smoke a meerschaum pipe?

Answer: Yes

A meerschaum pipe is white with a bowl made of sepiolite. It has a frothy appearence which accounts for its name. It comes from the German 'Meer' meaning 'sea' and 'Schaum' meaning 'foam'.
5. What does 'op' stand for in 'Op Shop'?

Answer: Opportunity

According to the dictionary this is the name folks down under give to what Europeans know as a charity shop. Cute.
6. If something is described as 'pico', is it large or small?

Answer: Small

This comes from Spanish, pico = beak, small amount. It can be used as a prefix as in picofarad, or serrated edging on material which is called pico.
7. Is a Siamese fighting fish a freshwater or sea water fish?

Answer: Freshwater

A brightly coloured long finned freshwater fish often kept in aquariums. It is native to Thailand. The male apparently is more aggressive than the female.
8. Which European country is associated with the terrorist group ETA?

Answer: Spain

This group want the Basque provinces to be independent. There are Basque provinces in both France and Spain. The acronoym means Eukadi Ta Askatsuna, "Basque Nation and Liberty".
9. Can you eat Manicotti?

Answer: Yes

This is a dish of large pasta tubes stuffed with meat filling or ricotta and then baked. UMMMMMMMM! Delicious.
10. What is distinctive about a Mansard roof? A mansard is a type of hip roof.

Answer: Two slopes on each of its four sides

The name comes from the French architect Francois Mansard 1598-1666. The roof slopes on all four sides with each side divided into a gentle upper slope and a steeper lower slope.
