Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. William Drennan is believed to be the first person to refer to Ireland as "the emerald isle" in his poem, "When ___ First Rose" (1795). Which word is missing from the title?

Answer: Erin

Drennan's poem begins with, "When Erin first rose from the dark swelling flood, God bless'd the green island and saw it was good; The em'rald of Europe, it sparkled and shone, In the ring of the world the most precious stone."
Although he is well known for "When Erin Rose" he is probably as well remembered for "Wake of William Orr" (1797) about a farmer from Antrim who was hanged for administering the oath of the United Irishmen.
2. In 1912, who reached the South Pole just 34 days after Roald Amundsen?

Answer: Scott

Scott's expedition in 1912 was the famous Terra Nova expedition, when all members of the party died on the return trip from the South Pole, including Lawrence Oates, who suffered frostbite in his feet and in order not to slow the party down any further, voluntarily walked to his own death.
In a diary entry made by Scott, the final, brave words of Oates as he left the tent were, "I am just going outside and may be some time."
3. Of which American state is Sacramento the capital?

Answer: California

California is well known for cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, and Sacramento is often forgotten, even though there are many reasons to visit this city.
There are many theatre companies based here, performing a variety of shows and for history buffs there are many preserved buildings, showcasing some of the finest American architecture from the mid 19th century.
For movies fans, the city is worth a visit for the annual Trash Film Orgy, which showcases the best (worst) horror and B-movies.
4. What name is given to a beer jug, depicting a seated person, often dressed in 18th century clothing?

Answer: Toby

The original Toby jugs were produced in Staffordshire UK as an alternative to Delft jugs, made by potters in the Netherlands.
The origins of the name Toby jug are unclear but it is believed to come from the Shakespearean character, Sir Toby Belch from "Twelfth Night" (1601 or 1602), who was quite often "under the influence".
5. By what name do we better know the plant of the ilex genus?

Answer: Holly

I have to confess that to me holly is holly, but there are in fact 480 different species of this plant which grow as shrubs, trees and climbing plants and can be either evergreen or deciduous.
The plant which is well known as a Christmas plant is common European holly (Ilex aquifolium) and while the plant has many Christian connections, it is also used in Druidism and Wicca.
6. Which fictional, cheese loving inventor has a dog called Gromit?

Answer: Wallace

Nick Park's claymation creations are not only much loved by children and adults alike, they are also Oscar winners.
Wallace and Gromit films have been nominated for five Oscars, winning three for the short films, "The Wrong Trouser" (1993) and "A Close Shave" (1995) and the feature film "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" (2005).
7. For which rock band is Scott Stapp the lead vocalist?

Answer: Creed

Creed achieved huge worldwide success with the tracks, "With Arms Wide Open" (2000) and "My Sacrifice" (2001) before disbanding in 2004 due to personal differences.
While Stapp released solo albums, the rest of the band teamed up with vocalist Myles Kennedy as Alter Bridge, who have released tracks such as "Rise Today" (2007) and "Isolation" (2010) which reached number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in USA.
Creed reformed in 2009, releasing the "Full Circle" album, before once again going on hiatus in 2012.
8. Which Gordon is used in polite society as an expression of surprise, in UK?

Answer: Bennett

The Gordon Bennett of the well known expression is believed to refer to James Gordon Bennett Jr., a journalism magnate who owned the "New York Herald" in 1860s and also lent his name to the annual International Gordon Bennett balloon race, a long distance hot air balloon race which began in 1906.
The most famous story regarding Bennett concerns the time, while very drunk, he mistook a fireplace for a toilet and urinated in full view of guests at a party hosted by his fiancee's father.
Needless to say, the engagement was broken off after this, and following a public horse whipping by his ex fiancee's brother, Bennett moved to UK, settling in Melton Mowbray.
His name as an expletive first appears in print in 1937, in the novel "You're in the Racket Too" by James Curtis, which contains the line, "He stretched and yawned. Gordon Bennett, he wasn't half tired."
9. In which American city did boiler makers Dickson Manufacturing Company have electric lights installed in 1880, leading to the city's nickname of "Electric City"?

Answer: Scranton, Pennsylvania

Scranton, in the Lackawanna River valley, is also well known for being in a large former anthracite coal mining area, an industry celebrated by the Lackawanna Coal Mine museum. There is also an Electric City Trolley Museum, which traces the history of the transport in the city, from 1886, when Scranton's streetcars were the only ones in USA powered solely by electricity.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: The Office

All are characters from the American version of the UK TV show, "The Office" about paper company Dunder Mifflin, which ran from 2005 to 2013. Erin Hannnon, played by Ellie Kemper, was the receptionist that replaced Pam after Pam joined the sales team in the office run by Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Robert California (James Spader) was appointed CEO by Sabre owner, Jo Bennett (Kathy Bates), but departed the company after it was bought by Michael's former boss, David Wallace (Andy Buckley). Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein) was the human resources manager who curtailed many of Michael's activities and when Toby went to live in Costa Rica briefly, he was replaced by Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) who became a love interest of Michael. Creed Bratton, played by Creed Bratton, was in charge of quality control and one of the funniest characters in the show, which was set in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
