480154st's Series Trivia Questions

1. RELIGION. Which book of the King James Bible is found between Deuteronomy and Judges?

From Quiz
Common Bond Quiz 27

Answer: Joshua

According to the Bible, Joshua became leader of the Israelites following the death of Moses and led them in their conquest of Canaan. The book of Joshua describes how the waters of the River Jordan parted to allow him to lead the Israelites across the river. At the city of Jericho, the Israelites carried the Ark of the Covenant for six days and on the seventh, when Joshua rallied them for battle, the city walls collapsed, allowing the Israelites to destroy the city and its inhabitants.

2. Which name goes with the surnames Tussaud, Curie and Antoinette?

From Quiz Common Bond Quiz 26

Answer: Marie

Marie Tussaud is famous for the wax museum she opened in London in 1835. She originally came to UK in 1802 to exhibit her sculptures in a traveling show, and was then unable to return to France due to the Napoleonic Wars. Marie Curie was the Polish born French scientist who pioneered research into radioactivity and became the first person to win a Nobel prize in two different fields. Marie Antoinette was the last queen of France prior to the French revolution, and was executed by guillotine for the crime of high treason.

3. What was the surname of Ned, the satirist that was the force behind UK TV show "That Was the Week That Was" (1962-63) as well as the host of American TV show, "We Interrupt This Week" (1978)?

From Quiz Common Bond Quiz 25

Answer: Sherrin

Ned Sherrin was a wonderful wit and raconteur, much missed following his death in 2007. He actually qualified as a barrister before deciding that a life in theatre was much more appealing than a life in the court room. As well as being the man behind TV shows such as "That Was the Week That Was" (1962-63), "Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life" (1964-65) and "We Interrupt This Week" (1978), he was also the man that produced and directed the musical, "Side by Side by Sondheim" (1976) which has played to packed houses the world over. Probably my favourite Ned Sherrin fact though is that he was educated at a school in Somerset, named after royal auditor, Hugh Sexey. Who wouldn't want to go to Sexey School?

4. What links a famous rock drummer with a river sung about by Audrey Hepburn and the founder of the Unification Church?

From Quiz Common Bond 24

Answer: Moon

Keith Moon was the drummer for the Who before his death in 1978. While he is often remembered for his decadent party lifestyle, about which there are many stories, he was also a supremely talented drummer, who also worked on tracks with the Yardbirds and the Beatles. The song, "Moon River" which became well known as Andy Williams' theme song was written for, and originally performed by, Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Breakfast At Tiffany's" (1961). The song was a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA in 1961 for Henry Mancini and his orchestra, while in UK, it reached number one in the same year, recorded by Danny Williams. Sun Myung Moon was the founder of the Unification Church, commonly referred to as the Moonies. He attracted wide spread interest for officiating at church blessing ceremonies, also referred to as "mass weddings" at which he would personally match couples together. One of the largest of these ceremonies occurred in Washington D.C. in 1997, when Moon presided over 30,000 couples.

Festivities involved the giving of gifts, large banquets and much partying. The date for Christmas was decided upon by Pope Julius I, probably in order to to create a Christian alternative to the pagan festival, and as more people converted to Christianity, they brought their pagan practices associated with Saturnalia with them.
