Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was unveiled as the new presenter of TV show "Mastermind" in 2003?

Answer: John Humphrys

Icelander Magnus Magnusson was presenter from the show's inception in 1972 until 1997 when it was axed by BBC TV. The show then ran on radio and satellite TV for a few years, until BBC2 revived it in 2003. Clive Anderson was presenter when it was on Discovery Channel and Ronnie Barker played the part of the question master in a hilarious spoof version on "The Two Ronnies".
2. From 1971 - 83 who presented the ITV game show "Sale of the Century"?

Answer: Nicholas Parsons

"Sale of the Century" always started with the voice over "and now, from Norwich, it's the quiz of the week", and apart from Coleman's mustard is possibly the most famous thing to come from Norwich. Chegwin presented the show on satellite TV in the mid 90s while Jim Perry was the host on the American version in the 80s.
3. In George Orwell's novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four", what is the name of the torture room, which reputedly contains the worst thing in the world?

Answer: Room 101

Since publication in 1949, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" has regularly appeared at the top end of "must read", favourite or greatest book lists. As well as introducing Big Brother and Room 101 to our vocabulary, it also gave us the phrases Thought Police, Doublespeak and memory hole. A film adaptation starring Donald Pleasence was made in 1956.
4. Name the year. "The Pirates of the Caribbean" ride opens in Disneyland, California; Homosexuality is decriminalised in UK and in South Africa; Dr. Christiaan Barnard performs the first heart transplant.

Answer: 1967

1967 was also the year of The Monterey Pop Festival, and the Six Day War between Israel, Syria, Egypt and Jordan. The Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and Superbowl I took place in Los Angeles with Green Bay Packers defeating Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.
5. In 1719, on what type of land mass did Robinson Crusoe find himself?

Answer: Desert Island

Published in 1719, Daniel Defoe's famous novel tells the tale of Crusoe's 28 years on a desert island, recounting his many adventures, his friendship with an escaped slave that he names Friday and his encounters with cannibals, mutineers and rogues before his eventual rescue.
6. CXCVIII is which number in Roman numerals?

Answer: 198

C = 100, X=10, V=5 and I=1, so it breaks down into 100 + 10 before 100 (90) + 5 +1+1+1, giving the total 198. Other Roman numerals include L for 50, D for 500 and M for 1000. There is no numeral for zero, instead the word nulla, meaning none, was used.
7. Ruth Jones, who won many plaudits for the role of Nessa in BBC3's "Gavin and Stacey", is also known for playing Myfanwy the bar maid in which BBC2 comedy show starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams?

Answer: Little Britain

Jones not only starred in "Gavin and Stacey", she co-wrote it too with James Corden and with co-star Rob Brydon recorded a charity version of the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton hit "Islands In The Stream" which topped the UK charts.
8. What is issued four times per day by the Met Office on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and has been mentioned in songs by Wire, Blur, Jethro Tull and Radiohead?

Answer: Shipping Forecast

The shipping forecast covers all UK coastal waters as well as selected inshore waters and advises of gale warnings, high and low pressure areas, wind direction and strength, precipitation and visibility. Blur song "This is a Low" mentions several of the forecast areas.
9. Toxophilites such as Katniss Everdeen from "The Hunger Games", "Lord of the Rings"' Legolas Greenleaf or Olympic medal holders Ku Bon Chan and Alison Williamson are more commonly referred to as what?

Answer: Archers

Toxophilite is of Greek origin, from toxon meaning bow and philos meaning loving. South Korean Ku Bon Chan won individual and team gold at the 2016 Olympics while Great Britain's Alison Williamson won individual bronze at the 2004 Olympics and she has represented GB at six consecutive Olympics, 1992-2012.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: Radio 4

JOHN HUMPHREYS has been the main presenter on the "TODAY" show since 1987, while NICHOLAS PARSONS has since 1967 (the year Radio 4 went on air) presenting, without repetition, deviation or hesitation, the show "Just A Minute". "LITTLE BRITAIN" started on the station before transferring to BBC2 as did popular show "ROOM 101", and the SHIPPING FORECAST is broadcast four times a day on the original 198 Long Wave frequency as weather conditions do not affect LW broadcasts. "THE ARCHERS" is the longest running soap opera in the world, originally being broadcast in 1950 on Radio 4's forerunner, The Home Service while "DESERT ISLAND DISCS" was first broadcast on BBC Forces Radio in 1942.
