Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury was murdered in what year?

Answer: 1170

As most of you should know, Henry II (1154-1189) was king when this happened, so you can throw out 1150 and 1190. That leaves you with a 50:50 chance.
2. Which country won Football's (Soccer's) inaugural World Cup in 1930?

Answer: Uruguay

The first cup was held in Uruguay. The host nation defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final.
3. What scale is used to measure the hardness of minerals?

Answer: Mohs

The rating of a mineral's "Hardness" or resistance to being scratched can be given using Mohs' scale. This was devised by the German geologist Frederich Mohs (1773-1839).
4. 'Luncheon of the Boating Party' was painted by which famous artist?

Answer: Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Painted in 1880-1881 and probably my favourite painting of all time!
5. Niamey is the capital of which African nation?

Answer: Niger

Well, anyone who knows their African capitals should get this one right.
6. What was the name of the journalist and main character in Frederick Forsythe's "The Odessa File" who hunts down Eduard Roschmann, the Butcher of Riga?

Answer: Peter Miller

The character Peter Miller played by Jon Voight in the 1974 movie.
7. What food did Captain Cook make his crew eat to ward off scurvy during his trips to the Pacific?

Answer: sauerkraut

Good old sauerkraut, high in vitamin C. The sailor boys were not that chuffed about eating pickled cabbage.
8. Who composed the music for the Christmas carol "Hark, the Herald Angles Sing"?

Answer: Felix Mendelssohn

Charles Wesley wrote the words and Felix composed the music.
9. Who played the character of "Professor Fate" in the 1960's movie "The Great Race"?

Answer: Jack Lemmon

I loved this movie. The other three were also in it. Curtis played The Great Leslie, Wynn played Hezekiah and Falk played Max.
10. The creator of Adidas, was Adolph Dasler. His brother Rudolph founder what other German company in 1948?

Answer: Puma

Yes, that's right, Puma. Interesting family.
