Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dixie Chicks had a hit in 1998 with 'There's Your Trouble', which came from which best selling album?

Answer: Wide Open Spaces

'Wide Open Spaces' was the fourth album for the three girls in the band, and went to number one on the US Country Album chart as well as reaching number four on the US Billboard 200. 'There's Your Trouble' was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country chart and was also a hit in the UK.

The other albums listed are from different country crossover artists. 'Come on Over' was a big seller for Shania Twain in 1997, and LeAnn Rimes released 'Twisted Angel' in 2002. 'Lonestar' was the first album, released in 1995, for the band of the same name.
2. 'The Trouble with Girls' was a 1969 film starring which singer and part-time actor?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Although all the singers listed also did some acting, it was Elvis who appeared in this film. The full title is 'The Trouble with Girls (and How to Get into It)' and the film is one of Presley's less memorable. There were no stand out songs on the soundtrack, with the only one that rings any bells being called 'Swing Down Sweet Chariot', a version of the traditional spiritual 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'.

It was Presley's penultimate acting role, with only 'Change of Habit', also from 1969, being later.
3. In rhyming slang, a man talking about his 'trouble' would be referring to which of these?

Answer: Wife

The full expression is 'trouble and strife', and it is one of the original Cockney rhymes which are believed to have been coined in the mid nineteenth century. I included 'bill' as a rhyme for another common expression - 'trouble at t'mill', which is used to describe any form of unrest. Stubble is self explanatory, and daughter might have made you think of 'troubled water'.
4. 'Trouble is my Business' is a collection of short stories, some featuring Philip Marlowe, written by which author?

Answer: Raymond Chandler

The authors listed are all well known for their detective fiction, but Philip Marlowe was created by Raymond Chandler. Among his full length novels are 'The Big Sleep' (1939) and 'The Long Goodbye' (1953). The collection of stories was published in 1950 and includes the title story. Hammett created Sam Spade, Spillane brought us Mike Hammer and Biggers was responsible for Charlie Chan.
5. 'The Troubles' refers to a period of unrest in the twentieth century centred on which part of the United Kingdom?

Answer: Northern Ireland

The background is too complicated to explain in a general quiz. Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, an independent country, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. There were strong feelings that Ireland should be one country and also religious differences between Protestants and Roman Catholics. From the 1960s onwards, many people were killed in bombings and ambushes by both sides.

The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 brought an end to most of the conflict.
6. 'Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble' are lines from which Shakespearean play?

Answer: Macbeth

The words are spoken by the three witches as they are brewing their evil potion. They are the ones who tell Macbeth that he will become king and set him on his murderous path. The play is one of Shakespeare's best known tragedies, although actors usually refer to it as the 'Scottish play' believing that it brings them bad luck to say the name aloud. 'Macbeth' also includes a ghost, as does 'Hamlet' and 'The Tempest' features magic, but not witches.

There are neither of these in 'Othello', just a particularly malevolent villain.
7. What do you pour on troubled water to calm down someone who is agitated?

Answer: Oil

The expression can be used in a figurative sense to describe the action of acting as a mediator in an argument. It is based on fact, in that a small amount of oil poured onto waves will act to make the water calm. The oil spreads over a large area, and only a small amount is needed in an expanse of water. Paul Simon famously used part of the expression as the title for his 1969 song 'Bridge over Troubled Water'.
8. 'Trouble in Tahiti' is a 1952 opera written by which multi-talented American born composer?

Answer: Leonard Bernstein

Although for many of us Bernstein is associated with musicals, particularly 'West Side Story' from 1957, he wrote much more than this. Among his works are (take a deep breath) ballets, operas, film scores, orchestral works, chamber music and piano works. 'Trouble in Tahiti' is one of three operatic works by Bernstein. 'Candide' is an operetta originally from 1956 with 'A Quiet Place' written in 1983 and later incorporating 'Trouble in Tahiti' which had only one act.
9. John Carpenter directed and Kurt Russell starred in a 1986 film, titled 'Big Trouble in Little______'. Which country fills in the gap?

Answer: China

The film is set in the Chinatown region of San Francisco, with Kurt Russell battling to save a young Chinese girl from sexual slavery. The plot includes elements of martial arts and magic, but was not a box office hit. Kurt Russell's long film career includes appearances in 'Silkwood' (1983) and 'Vanilla Sky' (2001). John Carpenter also directed 'Halloween' (1978) and was associated with its many sequels as either director or producer. Among his other credits are 'Prince of Darkness' (1987) and 'The Ward' (2010).
10. 'I Knew You Were Trouble' was a 2012 hit for which young singer/songwriter?

Answer: Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift began her singing career at the age of only fourteen, as a country music artist. She soon crossed over into mainstream with many of her songs reaching the US Billboard Hot 100 charts as well as featuring highly on the Country Music charts. 'I Knew You Were Trouble' was taken from her 2012 album 'Red', and reached number three on the Hot 100.

As Taylor was born only in 1989, she has achieved a great deal in her young life and gives every indication that her career will continue to be successful.
