Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have a beautiful pendant of the most intense blue stones. Nowhere near as hard as the stone in Princess Diana's engagement ring, it comes in at five on the Mohs Scale. What present did my mother give me?

Answer: Lapis lazuli

Lapis lazuli have been mined in Afghanistan for more than 6,000 years. They are also found in the Andes, Siberia, Pakistan, Canada and USA (Colorado).
2. Mother knows that I like the colour purple, so one present that she gave me was a pot plant. Which one of the following could it *NOT* be?

Answer: Calendula

Calendula officinalis (pot marigold) is a beautiful gold colour. The real gift was, in fact, a Saintpaulia ionantha (African violet) which is also available in deep purple, pink and white.
3. Being environmentally conscious, which of the following gifts could Mother choose to give me?

Answer: All of these

Recycling is something that we can all do, including passing on unwanted gifts. Trees are known as the "lungs of the world" and give out more than they take from the atmosphere. A wind-up radio uses human power.
4. On my 30th birthday, Mother bought a minor star in the Andromeda constellation for me. The certificate of ownership hangs on my wall. Is the star really mine?

Answer: No

Unfortunately not. You can "buy a star" from many companies, and they will provide you both a star chart showing the position and a certificate, but nobody owns the stars.
5. Knowing my love of forensic science television shows, which DVD box set from the 1970s did Mother give me?

Answer: Quincy

Set in Los Angeles, Jack Klugman starred as Quincy M.E. My favourite character was Sam Fujiyama, played by Robert Ito, as the indispensable and reliable lab technician.
6. As a special treat, Mother paid for me to have my cilia treated. Which of the following was done?

Answer: Eyelashes tinted

The eyelash tinting made a big difference, and I saved a fortune on mascara! Eyelash tinting is not permanent, however.
7. As a small treat, Mother will bring me "C20H24N2O2", contained in my favourite drink. What is it?

Answer: Gin and tonic

C20H24N2O2 is the chemical formula for quinine. Quinine was used in an anti-malaria drug. It is believed that tonic water was first invented to disguise the bitter taste. Gin and tonic with ice and a slice of lemon is a refreshing drink.
8. A fun gift took a bit of effort on my part as it came in kit form. What was this present, invented by Harold von Braunhut in 1957?

Answer: Sea Monkeys

Sea Monkeys are actually tiny shrimp. These beings dry out, but remain alive and look like grains of sand. Following the instructions on the box, two lots of shrimps are added to the water. If you are careful, these creatures can reproduce and last a long time.
9. Another kit gift I received contained fishhooks, lobster claws, crimps, a lot of pink calcium carbonate orbs and many silica plus sodium oxide bicones. What was it?

Answer: Jewellery making kit

Calcium carbonate orbs are pearls. Silica plus sodium oxide bicones are glass beads with pointed ends. Fishhooks, lobster claws and crimps are fastenings.
10. The last gift from Mother combined two of my great loves - reading and science. The book is "Wonders of the Universe". Who is the author?

Answer: Brian Cox

Professor Brian Edward Cox, OBE (born 3 March 1968) is a British particle physicist. He is best known for presenting science programmes for the BBC.

In the 1990s, he was the keyboard player for the pop band D:Ream.
