Question 1 of 10
1. When I was younger, my girlfriends and I wasted an enormous amount of time on a most foolhardy past time. We would baste ourselves with baby oil and put ourselves under the grill of the Queensland midday sun. Of course this had the unfortunate result of turning soft white skin into boiled lobster within an hour.

Back then there was a man who spent over 30 years spraying people with sunscreen to protect them from the sun. Who was this guardian angel of the Gold Coast known simply as "The Suntan Man"?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. I could spend hours window-shopping, and there is no better time than Christmas when the shops are bursting with swag. Christmas in Brisbane during my childhood was a magical time. We would dress up in our Sunday clothes and venture into the city to see the big Christmas tree, the nativity scene and the carolers. And the biggest attraction, after the man in the red suit and fake beard, were the Myer Department store windows.

One New York store is famous for its window displays and parade. Which one is it?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. There's nothing better than drowning a few worms. Except, I suppose, actually catching a few fish!

Which Australian, known for his catchphrase "It doesn't get any better than this", has been host to his own fishing show since 1991?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. While I enjoy watching many different sports on television and have wasted countless hours as a couch potato, my favourite viewing pleasure would have to be the Winter Olympics. Australia hasn't won many medals at these games, and it wasn't until 2002 that we finally won a gold medal. Who won Australia's first ever Winter Olympic Gold Medal?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. I love watching movies, and have an embarrassingly large DVD collection. One of my favourite actors (and it's not just that he's good-looking) is an Australian. In an early movie he was a romance-writing truckie but now he's known for his sideburns and claws. And who can forget his hosting duties at the "Oscars"? Who is this Aussie bloke? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Once I start reading a new book, it's very hard to put it down and I quite often waste an entire day reading. While I have many favourite authors, I enjoy reading about female "investigators". I use this term loosely because there is a trio I read about that aren't very adept in investigative or social skills. Which of these fictional females is not American, inept or ditzy in some way?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Another way I have of procrastinating is by playing with John Spilsbury's invention. I can spend hours huddled over a pile of cardboard cutouts while slowly going cross-eyed. What am I wasting time on now? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. A few years ago, a new puzzle started in the morning paper and from the first time I played it, I was hooked. Now I start each day with a couple of games and a couple of coffees. What is this addictive game of fitting numbers into a 9 x 9 grid? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. I spend a lot of time playing with my rescue pet, little madam that she is. Of course, I'm just her sparring partner and the hand that feeds her. But at least her claws have been clipped and all I need to worry about are her sharp teeth. Can you guess what sort of animal my rather bossy but adorable pet is? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The coveted number one time waster, the place where I spend waaay too much of my time is the site you are on right now! To whom do we owe our thanks and gratitude for creating the FunTrivia site? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Al Baldwin

Before the skin cancer message was heeded, Al Baldwin's mission was to protect tourists and residents from skin cancer and sunburn. For 33 years he could be seen walking up and down the golden sands spraying people with sunscreen. It is estimated that he would have sprayed almost 3 million people in that time. His effort made Al an unofficial Australian ambassador and a tourism icon. Following his death from lymphatic cancer (not skin cancer), hundreds attended a memorial on the beach where his beach chair, sunglasses, cap and spraying machine were set up. His ashes were then scattered in the surf.

Wrong answers: Alec Baldwin is an American actor, Albert Einstein should need no introduction, and Uncle Albert spends his time having tea on the ceiling (from Mary Poppins for the uninitiated).

Answer: Macy's

Every year Macy's displays two window displays, one of which shows scenes from "Miracle on 34th Street" which was set in Macy's. The first ever Macy's Christmas parade was held in 1924 and featured real animals. The window displays are usually unveiled by mid-November in time for Thanksgiving, and the parade has since become the Thanksgiving Parade.

Wrong answers: Do you really need these? Harrods is in London, Myer is Australia's largest chain of department stores and IKEA is a Scandinavian furniture store.
3. There's nothing better than drowning a few worms. Except, I suppose, actually catching a few fish! Which Australian, known for his catchphrase "It doesn't get any better than this", has been host to his own fishing show since 1991?

Answer: Rex Hunt

Rex Hunt is an ex Australian football player and commentator turned Aussie radio and television personality. His first fishing show was "Angling Action" in 1981. Following a series of name changes, his show became "Rex Hunt's Fishing adventures" and remained on air until 2004.

Apart from saying "Folks, it doesn't get any better than this" as he reeled in a big fish, he'd then kiss said fish and send it back into the water. I have only caught a fish of legal size once in my life so far, and I can tell you there's only one place it went. And it wasn't in the water!

Wrong answers: Ralph Malph and Fred Flintstone are fictional television characters. Who's Harold Holt? Well, he was an Australian Prime Minister who probably became fish food...

Answer: Steven Bradbury

Steve Bradbury won Australia's first and most unlikely gold medal at the 2002 games in Salt Lake City. This remarkable feat only came about because he was the last man standing after the other contestants fell at the last turn. Steve's feat has made him into something of a folk hero in Australia, and he has also entered Australian lingo where "Doing a Bradbury" means an accidental or unexpected win.

Wrong answers: John Cadbury created "Cadbury chocolates" and Steven Spielberg is a famous movie director. Zali Steggall won Australia's first medal when she won bronze in the slalom in 1998 games in Nagano.

Answer: Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman is a very talented Australian actor who is instantly recognisable in his role of Wolverine in "X-Men". I first saw him in "Paperback Hero" years ago and have been a fan ever since. He starred in the musical "The Boy From Oz" for which he received many awards, including a Tony. Hugh also hosted the 2009 "Oscars" awards night, and proved to be an excellent choice.

Wrong Answers: They are all Aussie actors, however none of them were in "X-Men". Hugo Weaving was brilliant in "Priscilla- Queen of the Desert" and who can forget "The Matrix" and "Lord of the Rings" trilogies. Geoffrey Rush shone in "Shine", and received numerous awards. Jackie Weaver has made many Australian movie and television appearances.

Answer: Miss Marple

Agatha Christie created the character of Miss Marple and she features in twelve of her crime novels. She has also been portrayed on the silver screen numerous times.

Wrong answers: Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter in a series by Janet Evanovich. Lisa Lutz created Isobel "Izzy" Spellman, a detective in her family's agency. Bubbles Yablonsky lives up to her name as a hairdresser cum detective in a series by Sarah Strohmeyer.
7. Another way I have of procrastinating is by playing with John Spilsbury's invention. I can spend hours huddled over a pile of cardboard cutouts while slowly going cross-eyed. What am I wasting time on now?

Answer: Jigsaw puzzles

Mapmaker John Spilsbury invented the jigsaw puzzle in 1767. A map was pasted onto wood and then cut into pieces, mainly as an aid to teaching geography. Original jigsaws did not have interlocking pieces; these did not emerge until a century later. Milton Bradley produced the first jigsaw for children :The Smashed up Locomotive" in 1880.

Wrong answers: It is thought that paper dolls originated in Japan, around 900 C.E., but possibly earlier. Decoupage dates back to 18th century Venice, while scrap booking is a relatively new fad.
8. A few years ago, a new puzzle started in the morning paper and from the first time I played it, I was hooked. Now I start each day with a couple of games and a couple of coffees. What is this addictive game of fitting numbers into a 9 x 9 grid?

Answer: Sudoku

Back in 1793, Mathematician Leonard Euler invented "Latin Squares", the precursor to today's Sudoku puzzles. It wasn't until 1984 that a Japanese publisher made a few logistical improvements to the game and called it "Sudoku". Apart from the inevitable head banging against the nearest hard surface when errors are made, Sudoku and crossword puzzles are pretty harmless and it is widely thought that they may stave off the onset of Alzheimer's disease. So bring 'em on I say!

Wrong answers: Scrabble uses letter tiles on a 15 x 15 grid and you can't play against yourself, well I can't, because I cheat! Bridge is a card game and Boggle also uses letters.

Answer: Cat

My pet is a rescue cat that now rules the household, but I love her anyway. I treat her with as much respect as the ancient Egyptians would have, although I don't give her jewels. I have been known to give the occasional treat of prawns or crab (tinned of course, and don't tell my husband!), but I'm sure she thinks she deserves it all the time.
10. The coveted number one time waster, the place where I spend waaay too much of my time is the site you are on right now! To whom do we owe our thanks and gratitude for creating the FunTrivia site?

Answer: Terry Ford

To us Terry is the guru, the founder and fixer-upper of the website that we spend so much time on. But he is also a computer guru with a degree in computer science! Terry first started the site at the University of Waterloo under the banner: "Archive for Useless Facts and Trivia" and in 1995 it was added to the Yahoo! Website. The site expanded in 1999, becoming FunTrivia.com after its domain was registered. The rest, as they say, is history.

Wrong Answers: Orson Welles and Henry Ford should need no introduction and Terry Boot is a fictional character in the "Harry Potter" series.
