Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Under Dutch rule this city was called Batavia. What name does it have now?

Answer: Jakarta

Appropriately Jakarta is located on the (J) island of Java.
Johannesburg is in South Africa as you will know, but although there are some historical connections, South Africa was never a colony of Holland. Jaffna is a city in Sri Lanka and Jena is a city in Germany where in 1806 Napoleon beat a Prussian army.
2. Before he went solo Paul Weller was a member of the Style Council, and before that he was the frontman of a very popular British band. Name?

Answer: The Jam

The Jam was formed in 1976. The members were Paul Weller (guitar, vocals) Bruce Foxton (Bass, vocals) and Rick Buckler (drums). They made seven albums and scored no. 1 hits like 'Going Underground', 'Start' and 'Town Called Malice'. They broke up in 1982.
3. Who is the odd one out? Think "time".

Answer: Jupiter

Jupiter is the only one here not to have a month named after him. June was called after Juno (daughter of Saturn and Rhea), July was named after Julius Caesar. Incidentally, the Dutch word for emperor (keizer) is derived from Caesar. Janus was the god of the beginnings and endings, gates and doors and some more things.

When the question wouldn't have been about "time" (as stated), Julius Caesar would have been the odd one out, as he is the only one here who was not a mythological figure.
4. Which Christian name was given most frequently to American presidents?

Answer: James

Depending on how you look at it, there are five presidents named James proper. In chronological order they are: James Madison (1809-1817), James Monroe (1817-1825), James K. Polk (1845-1849), James Buchanan (1857-1861) and James Garfield who took office as president on March 4 1881 and was assassinated on July 2 the same year. If you consider that Jimmy is a variant of James, with president Carter (1977-1981) there would have been six presidents named James.

There were four Johns: Adams, Quincy Adams, Tyler and Kennedy. Jacob and Jefferson were never Christian names for a president although there was of course a Thomas Jefferson.
5. What famous Italian soccer club is nicknamed 'The Old Lady'?

Answer: Juventus

Juventus, from Turin, is one of the few clubs who has won all major European trophies. The most infamous win of course was on May 29, 1985, when Liverpool was beaten in a farcical match. It was played after hooliganism took the lives of almost forty people. In 1996 Juventus won the Champions League under friendlier circumstances, beating Ajax after penalties.
6. This question is about jealousy, which starts of course with this tenth letter of the alphabet. Which phobia means fear of jealousy?

Answer: Zelophobia

Oikophobia is the fear of home, Soceraphobia is the fear of parents-in-law and Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words.
7. Girls who sang 'Nights Over Egypt', the real surname of David Bowie, mean soccer player who turned successful actor. What surname name connects them?

Answer: Jones

The Jones Girls sang 'Nights Over Egypt', which is about their only hit I know; David Bowie was really David Jones, but as there was a certain Davy Jones from the Monkees, he had to have another name. It became Bowie after the Western legend Jim Bowie; before he became an actor, Vinnie Jones used to play at the ´Crazy Gang´ aka as Wimbledon. He wasn't that good, but boy, was he mean!
8. A Confederate General who was accidentally shot by his own men and died of pneumonia, the name of a famous musical family, and an athlete who excelled in baseball and football. What name is the common bond?

Answer: Jackson

T. J. or Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson was the right hand of Robert E. Lee who (indirectly) was killed at Chancellorsville. Michael and Janet are the two most successful members of this famous family. Bo Jackson played baseball for the Chicago White Sox as well as the Kansas City Royals and football for the LA Raiders.
9. Which word is etymologically the odd one out?

Answer: Jackal

Jackal is the only word here not to be derived from the word Jack. It is originally a Sanskrit word meaning 'howler'. Jockey is a Scottish variant of the name Jack, a name that returns in Jackdaw as well as in Jackrabbit.
10. Which word does not belong here (think about what they are made of)?

Answer: Junk

Jet is a opaque black gemstone, Jasper is a opaque semi-precious gemstone and Jade is a gemstone that comes in a variety of colors, best known of all emerald green. Junk is cheap material, a Chinese ship or slang for heroin.
