Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do you call the fear of the color white?

Answer: Leukophobia

They all can spoil a wedding or the aftermath. Logophobia means fear of words, which would mean that no one will say the magic words. Lunophobia is fear of the moon, which makes it impossible to plan a romantic night under clear skies. A Limnophobian dreads lakes, so an outing there will be out of the question.
2. Cricket! 'Howzat' yells the bowler and he watches the umpire in anticipation. And after a long wait the umpire stretches his arm and points his finger. Out! What fate did the ousted batsman suffer?

Answer: Leg before wicket

These are all cricket terms. Leg Before Wicket (LBW) means that if the batsman's leg had not stood in the way of the ball, the wicket would have been hit. A leg bye means that the batsman or his gear (except his bat of course) has been hit by the bowler's ball. This will give the batting team an extra run. A legspinner is some kind of bowler and he can deliver a legbreak.
3. Most appropriate that I put this question at three. What element is third on the periodic table?

Answer: Lithium

Lanthanum (La) has got number 57 on the table; you will find Lutetium (Lu) at number 71 and Lead (Plumbum or Pb) is at number 82. By the way, Hydrogen (H) and Helium (He) are numbers 1 and 2 respectively.
4. Which of these countries is the smallest?

Answer: Liechtenstein

To the average European, that was a giveaway, although Luxembourg is also very small. But Liechtenstein is the real deal: 160 square kilometres or 62 square miles. Some cities are bigger! You can find this dwarf between Austria and Switzerland. But the smallest country by far is Vatican City, which is in Rome, and is a country in its own right!
5. What's the surname of: Peggy, Robert, Spike and Christopher?

Answer: Lee

Peggy was a singer, Robert was a very famous and skilled general in the American Civil War, Spike is a director and Christopher was an actor who played some scary roles.
6. From which of these dialects did the Standard modern French language develop?

Answer: Languedoil

Literally it means: the language of yes. In the middle ages there were roughly two languages in France. One was north of the river Loire, the other one south of it. The distinction was made in the way people said 'yes'. Above the Loire, where the center of power was, it sounded like 'Oiel' (hence Langue d'oil), south of the Loire it was 'hoc', which explains Langue d'oc. Langueparis and Languelyon are made up words.
7. In World War II Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) suffered a siege of almost three years. You can imagine that casualties were high. But the city didn't surrender. It survived, thanks in part to supplies that came via a lake. What was the name of that lake?

Answer: Ladoga

Lake Ladoga lies north of Saint Petersburg. Especially the severe Russian winter was, despite the horrible hardship it caused (with cannibalism as one of the results!), a blessing in disguise. Frost made the ice so thick that the city could be provided with the necessary food and ammunition.
8. You'll probably know the region of Lombardy in Italy. But do you know after what Germanic tribe it was called?

Answer: Longobards

Longobards simply means Longbeards. Originally the tribe of the Longobards was settled at the lower Elbe, a river in northern Germany. Around the fourth century the Longobards had left the place to migrate southward and in the sixth century they popped up in Italy.
9. What is the birthflower of the month May?

Answer: Lily of the valley

Other birthflowers: Carnation for January, Violet for February, Daffodil for March, Sweet Pea or Daisy for April, Rose for June, Larkspur for July, Gladiolus for August, Aster for September, Marigold for October, Chrysanthemum for November and Narcissus for December.
10. She was the goddess of the moon. The Greeks called her Selena. What did the Romans call her?

Answer: Luna

The goddess of the moon. All other names are from Greek or Roman (mythological) history. Livia was the third wife of Emperor August. Lycia was the home of the Chimaera. Leto and Latona are one and the same. Leto (or Latona) was the wife of Zeus before Hera. Twins Apollo and Artemis are her two children.
